HEILUNG Release New Live Video “Anoana”

HEILUNG don’t play shows. They perform a ritual. Every performance begins Kai Uwe Faust leading Christopher Juul, Maria Franz and their ritual collective in an ancient prayer. Soon after, the audience is swept into rapture, swayed by incense and throat singing, primordial rhythms, subtle electronic textures, a mesmerizing light show, an army of warriors and bursts of fire; a ritual.

Heilung have released brand new footage from their performance at London’s Apollo Theatre. Watch the hypnotic video for the Nordic collective’s hit song “Anoana” and get a sneak peak at their full live concert DVDs, which will come out next year.

“Every tour has a beginning and an end”, says Heilung. “We’ve captured both moments. After the long pause from the world’s stages we kicked off our Amplified History Tour with the first ritual at the sold out Red Rocks Amphitheater, Denver CO, in October 2021. In January 2023 and 45 rituals later, we performed at the Apollo in London. These two rituals are the continuation of our original first performance from 2017, named LIFA, and will be released separately as “LIFA Iotungard” and “LIFA Llyn Dain “. The two releases will witness not only how far we’ve grown since 2017, but also exactly how far the ritual has evolved during the 15 months of touring”.

Heilung are currently touring North America. They’ve already performed to sold-out crowds in Greensboro, Baltimore and Clearwater. The tour was scheduled to wrap up in Denver, but Heilung have now added another show. They’ll play the Shrine Expo Hall in Los Angeles, California, on December 11.

Tickets are running low for the remaining dates. One dollar for each ticket sold will support a tree planting initiative.

Since its inception in 2015, the enigmatic ritual collective HEILUNG has been paving melodic paths to the past with their unique and mystifying sound. Evading all conventional genre tags and the confines of any specific labels, the group aptly self-describes their sound as “amplified history,” emphasizing their ability to connect modern society with the rudiments of humanity’s beginnings through music. HEILUNG once again journeys back in time with its new chapter, ‘Drif;’ however, unlike previous offerings that centered around prehistoric northern Europe, album number three will explore other great rudimentary civilizations outside of Europe.

“All the songs on ‘Drif’ have their own stories,” adds HEILUNG throat singer and one of the band’s three composers, Kai Uwe Faust. Each has its place and sense of belonging, with inspiration not only from Northern Europe, but from the ancient great civilizations,” explains the band. “We took the ancient surrounding advanced civilizations in account, because our ancestral Nordic civilizations did not just pop up, exist and disappear in isolation. Already in the Bronze Age, we found silk on German land that was imported already from the far, far East 3000 years ago. From the Viking age, we found beads that were brought there from present-day Syria high up in the Northern mountains.

“Centrally important concepts, still in extensive use today, like the number Zero and all the mathematical universes deriving from it, the use of iron and the general concept of settling all originate from traditional high civilizations outside the north and still fundamentally changing our ancestor’s world.

“With singing these primordial songs we want to give tribute to these cultures, reconnect to the beginnings and remember that we all, from East to West, from past to present, are connected through the exchange of ideas and inspiring each other.”
Meaning “gathering,” ‘Drif’ serves as more than merely a gateway that bridges history with modern day society, but is also a statement of the strength in unity and togetherness, which will come as no surprise to those who have experienced HEILUNG’s live ritual, in which every ceremony starts with a reminder that “we are all brothers.” “‘Drif’ means ‘gathering,’’ explains HEILUNG. “A throng of people, a horde, a crowd, a pack. In symbiosis with the album title, ‘Drif’ consists of a flock, a collection, a gathering, a collage of songs, that much like little flames were seeking towards each other, to join, to bond, to create, and be greater together.”

While HEILUNG features authentic and archaic instrumentation that ranges from rattles and ritual bells to human bones and throat singing, their captivating brand of music is far from primitive. Producer and founding member Christopher Juul implements subtle electronic elements that elevates the musical atmosphere and provides a more in-depth and layered soundscape.

“This album has very clearly dictated its own path. Our attempts to tame it were repeatedly fruitless, and once we came to this realization, the creative flow surged forward with immense force. So much so that sometimes it felt like the songs wrote themselves,” the band adds.

HEILUNG’s success has been unprecedented, achieving milestones in its few short years of existence that many do not see in a lifetime. The collective already had rapidly been growing a buzz upon the self-release of their first full-length, ‘Ofnir,’ in 2015, but their dizzying upward trajectory really took off from the moment they set foot on the stage at Castlefest in 2017 for the now-legendary debut of their live ritual. Luckily for those who were not fortunate enough to bare witness to this magical event, the full ceremony was captured on film, having since been viewed by tens of millions of fans across the globe.

As HEILUNG trekked across Europe and brought their mystifying experience to new audiences, talk of this new band and their stunning ceremony made way to Season of Mist label owner Michael Berberian, who quickly offered the band a record contract after seeing their undeniable musical impact for himself.

By 2019, HEILUNG launched their second full-length record, ‘Futha,’ which contrasted the masculine and battle-heavy themes of their debut with a feminine counterpart that celebrated fertility and female energy. Upon the first week of the record’s release, it graced the Billboard charts with coveted numbers, debuting at #3 on the Heatseekers Charts and #4 on the Billboard World Music Chart, placing on a total of seven Billboard charts while meeting critical-acclaim from the press on a global scale.

Having already made its way around Europe, HEILUNG announced its first ever North American tour for the start of 2020, which sold out entirely within 72 hours of ticket on-sale. The band later returned to the United States and performed their live ritual for a sold out audience of 10,000 people at the historic Red Rocks Amphitheater in Denver, CO (USA), further solidifying their early legacy status.

By this time, the band’s music started to appear in places outside the confines of music venues, videos, and vinyl. From hit television series like ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Vikings’ to video game giants like ‘Conqueror’s Blade VII: “Wolves of Ragnarök’ and ‘Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II’ to the blockbuster Robert Eggers film ‘The Northman,’ HEILUNG’s music has risen far above the underground and has transcended into a greater world. Even a global pandemic couldn’t slow down HEILUNG’s success; it only strengthened them and gave them the gift of time to complete work on album number three, ‘Drif.’

According to Greek philosopher Pythagoras, three is a divine number, signifying harmony, wisdom, and understanding. He also believed it to be the number of time – past, present, future; birth, life, death; beginning, middle, end. Purposefully or not, ‘Drif’ embodies this philosophy, putting forth a divine work of art that ties together the beginning of civilization with the modern world today. Make no mistake, HEILUNG still does not represent any modern political or religious ideology, but rather delivers a humbling reminder of where we came from. “Remember, we are all brothers. All people, beasts, tree and stone and wind, we all descend from the one great being that was always there, before people lived and named it, before the first seed sprouted.”

Hollow Front – The Fear of Letting Go | Album Review

Change and turbulence are an inevitability within the music industry. This is all too apparent for Grand Rapids, MI-based Hollow Front, as after a bus accident/insurance lawsuit, they are now comprised of two members, Tyler Tate and Lee Albrecht. Not ready to call it quits yet, the metalcore duo wrote: “We’re still very much the same band, minus Dakota singing. Being in a band isn’t a life long commitment. So when people feel like it’s time to move on, for whatever reason, there’s no hard feelings. Only support.” It’s now or never for Tate and Albrecht as they are ready to show the group’s new record, The Fear of Letting Go, to the world.

Just a year removed from prior record The Price of Dreaming, it’s a testament to the workhorse mentality to put out The Fear of Letting Go with such haste. That’s why it’s so impressive that despite the vocal switch, there’s no drop in quality. Fans of such modern metalcore acts as Wage War and Fit For a King will instantly find this 2023 entry to be a thrilling listen. Whether it’s the chuggy verses or the anthemic choruses, Hollow Front weaves their DNA from a unique point in the genre’s history. Writes Lee in a Reddit AMA: “When we were writing the album we discussed a bunch of old albums but not a ton of modern ones. Tyler and I are both big fans of old metalcore”

The modern metalcore landscape is equal parts heavy as it is melodic, and The Fear of Letting Go strikes this balance with poise. On top of that, it mixes in electronic elements ever so subtly yet impactfully, all integrated with Lee’s production cues capitalizing on his songwriting chops. Since Lee and Tyler have worked in tandem since the band’s inception, the core of Hollow Front is a seamless two-piece – but Dakota Alvarez’s presence is still a welcome addition in “Under Pressure” and “Letting Go”.

There’s ample surprises and big moments on The Fear of Letting Go that separate Hollow Front from the pack. “Over the Cradle” gutted my heart in its closing lyrics, which led into the heaviest and best song on the record “Crash and Burn” featuring ERRA/Texas in July’s JT Cavey. Throughout the rest of the record, the common theme of “breaking point” and “pressure” tends to rear its head in a little too frequently within the lyricism, but this nitpick hardly detracts from the rest of the moving pieces that make each listen enjoyable.

There’s no other band in metalcore that could go through what Hollow Front went through and still churn out a great album in record time. The Fear of Letting Go is living proof that Tyler Tate and Lee Albrecht are powerhouses with their passion and can produce a competent product no matter what adversity they’re faced with. Even though the duo isn’t set to tour in the near future, they can rest well knowing the Hollow Front project still has legs and will be loved by fans far and wide in The Fear of Letting Go.

The Gaslight Anthem – History Books | Album Review

The Gaslight Anthem History Books

It’s been a while since we’ve heard Jersey folk rock from The Gaslight Anthem and after hearing this, they easily picked up where they left off. The collaboration with Bruce Springsteen obviously is a focal point, great title track. The energetic songs like “Little Fires” and “Positive Charge” hold your attention. They sound great. The quieter, more somber tracks balance the album like “The Weatherman” and “Empires” do a good job of fleshing out the sound. Some of the tracks struggle to keep your attention as you zone out due to not having much foundation or production value. The high points definitely stand out well and it’s good to hear another chapter from The Gaslight Anthem in History Books. 7/10

“The Gaslight Anthem is a four-piece rock band from New Brunswick, New Jersey. They are known for their energetic live shows and their songs that often tell stories about working-class life and nostalgia. The band has released six studio albums, their most recent being History Books, which was released on October 27, 2023.

History Books is the band’s first album in nine years, and it marks a return to their roots. The album is full of energetic punk rock songs with catchy melodies and thoughtful lyrics. The album also features a collaboration with Bruce Springsteen on the title track.

One of the standout tracks on History Books is “Positive Charge.” The song is a rallying cry for hope and resilience in the face of adversity. The lyrics are full of imagery of working-class life, and the chorus is anthemic and uplifting.” (Google Bard)

FOZZY New Video “Spotlight” Out Now!

FOZZY

Today, powerhouse rock band FOZZY are thrilled to release their new music video for their single “Spotlight”. With the superstar showmanship of front-man CHRIS JERICHO, tag-teamed with guitar genius RICH WARD, FOZZY are a band that have always pushed the boundaries both sonically and artistically over their twenty plus year career. From performing three shows across America in one day, to filming a music video on one of the fastest hair raising roller coasters in the world, the band lives up to their reputation again with their “Spotlight” video.

Never falling short in creating innovative, imaginative videos, “Spotlight” is no exception in the FOZZY Universe. Filmed by Exceleration Media and Firefly Drone Shows, the ground breaking video features hundreds of live drones that light up the night sky to co-star in this first ever Drone Show music video. It’s a full out assault on your eyes, ears, brain, and remaining senses, as JERICHO braves the elements.

To fully capture the magnitude of the night flying drones for the video, FOZZY’S creative team brought the concept to Firefly Drone Shows, who are recognized as the innovation leader in the drone light show industry.

“The concept was to design an exciting drone show based on the ‘Spotlight’ lyrics, and bring the drone performance to life directly behind Chris Jericho. The end result is a thrilling music video that took months of planning and programming to make possible,” said Firefly Drone Shows Co-Founder Ryan Sigmon.

According to FOZZY Co-founder and Guitarist Rich Ward, “When we came up with the concept of doing a drone show video, we knew the only person who could pull this off was Chris. Who else could conduct hundreds of drones to streak through the sky while creating images 800 feet tall and over 1000 feet wide? Bringing a music video concept to life, especially one that has never been pulled off before, can be challenging because of the multitude number of unknowns. With that said, it was completely worth the challenge and we hope you enjoy “Spotlight” as much as we enjoyed making it!”

The single for “Spotlight” demonstrates Fozzy’s evolving sound, melding rock and metal with powerful emotion and musical might. “Spotlight” was produced with precision by Johnny Andrews (THREE DAYS GRACEALL THAT REMAINSHALESTORM) and sonically refined by mixer Jacob Hanson (VOLBEATAMARANTHEARCH ENEMY). “Spotlight” earned the #2 Most Added song this week at National Rock Radio, and with Six consecutive Top 20 singles including a Gold Single with “Judas”, Fozzy is steadily becoming one of the most successful bands on current Rock Radio.

Greta Van Fleet Starcatcher 2024 Tour

Green Day, one of the most iconic punk rock bands of all time, is set to release their fourteenth studio album, Saviors, on January 19, 2024. The album is the band’s first since Kerplunk (1991) in which they own the copyright, although it is under an exclusive license to Reprise Records.

Saviors was recorded in London, England, and Los Angeles, California, and sees the band collaborating with producer Rob Cavallo for the first time since 2012. Cavallo is known for his work on some of Green Day’s most iconic albums, including Dookie (1994) and American Idiot (2004).

Green Day has released one single from Saviors so far, titled “The American Dream Is Killing Me.” The song is a scathing indictment of the current state of the United States, with Armstrong singing about the “greed and hate” that he sees all around him.” (from Google Bard)

Papa Roach Donates $150k to American Foundation for Suicide Prevention

Rock legends Papa Roach announced today that they have made a $150,000 donation to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) “Talk Away The Dark Campaign” which was presented at the Finale performance of “The Revolutions Live Tour” alongside touring partners Shinedown and Spiritbox and tour promoter Live Nation in Denver, CO. The tour, which performed to over 250,000 attendees at 30 shows, saw the debut live performance of the song “Leave A Light On”, which was preceded by an emotional PSA delivered by frontman Jacoby Shaddix, who pledged a donation on behalf of each city’s attendees, culminating in the $150,000 donation.

“We all have a role in preventing suicide and supporting each another’s mental health. Music has always been a powerful way to spread these messages. That’s why we are so thankful to Papa Roach for making mental health messages a priority throughout their career and most recently with “Leave a Light On” and renaming it after our campaign Talk Away The Dark,” said AFSP CEO Bob Gebbia. “And their generous donation will support AFSP’s public education, programs for survivors of loss, research, and advocacy work, that is essential to saving lives.”

The band were so moved by the emotive response each night of the tour and the work done by the AFSP, that they have officially re-named the song “Leave A Light On (Talk Away The Dark)” and pledged a perpetual royalty from the song’s use, to be donated directly to the AFSP to continue their mission to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide long after the “Revolutions Live Tour.” The re-named single will officially be released on October 31, 2023.

“This issue doesn’t just affect one of us, or a few of us, it affects all of us.” says Papa Roach frontman Jacoby Shaddix. “We’re proud to work alongside the AFSP to support their mission to bring hope to those affected by suicide, and proud that this song – which has been special to us since it was first written – can play a part in bringing a little more light to an incredibly important topic.”

Papa Roach also released an official music video of “Leave a Light On (Talk Away The Dark)” today, here. The connection between the message of the song and the cause is undeniably evident. This impactful initiative teaches you the warning signs for suicide, and how to have a conversation that could save a life — whether it’s someone else’s or your own. Help is available — Talking, is the first step to preventing suicide.

Satanic Panic: How Metal Was Targeted & How Music Is Targeted Today

Satanic Panic

In the ’80s, Satanic Panic came for heavy music as the reason for America’s youth being corrupted. Today, Satanic Panic has a new target. This video looks at Satanic Panic: How Metal Was Targeted & How Music Is Targeted Today.

“Satanic Panic was a period of mass hysteria in the United States in the 1980s, fueled by moral panic surrounding perceived Satanism and the occult. The panic was characterized by widespread media coverage of the supposed influence of Satanism on popular culture, including heavy metal music.

Heavy metal music was a particular target of the Panic. Critics of the genre accused it of promoting Satanism and violence. They pointed to lyrics that dealt with occult themes and imagery, as well as the use of satanic symbols in album artwork. The media also played a role in demonizing heavy metal, with stories about headbanging fans and concerts that turned violent.

The Satanic Panic had a significant impact on American culture in the 1980s. It led to censorship of music and books, and it created a climate of fear and suspicion. The panic also had a negative impact on the heavy metal music scene, as bands were forced to defend themselves against accusations of Satanism.

The Satanic Panic began to subside in the late 1980s, as more and more people began to question the allegations. However, the legacy of the panic continues to this day. Heavy metal music is still often associated with Satanism, and it is still a target of moral panic.” (Google Bard)

blink-182 – One More Time | Album Review

blink-182 One More Time

Tom’s return does bring back the familiar, nostalgic side of blink-182. Equal parts serious and ridiculous. Sometimes to extremes as the album covers everything from Cancer to…well, “Edging”. Travis Barker is amazing and the riffs on top normally come across clean outside of a few production and mixing choices that leave tracks feeling unlevel. One More Time is 17 tracks and while I enjoyed most of the singles, some tracks here could have easily been scrapped. Songs like “You Don’t Know What You’ve Got” and “When We Were Young” really deal with repetitious writing for little effect. There’s deep and meaningful material, cheeky pop-punk shenanigans, and absolute cheese. All with varying mileage. All in all, it’s a good reflection of Blink’s entire career. It was nice to hear Mark, Tom, and Travis together one more time. 6/10

From Google Bard: “One More Time, the ninth studio album by American rock band Blink-182, was released on October 20, 2023, through Columbia Records. The album marks the return of guitarist/vocalist Tom DeLonge, reuniting their best-known lineup for the first time in seven years. After bassist/vocalist Mark Hoppus received a cancer diagnosis in 2021, the three reconvened to overcome old disputes, leading to DeLonge rejoining. It is also their first album to be produced by drummer Travis Barker.

The album’s title track and first single, released on September 21, 2023, is a mid-tempo ballad with a catchy chorus and introspective lyrics. The song reflects on the band’s history and their desire to make music together again, despite their past differences. It’s a fitting theme for an album that marks their much-anticipated reunion.”

+ New Date

Bad Omens slither through boundaries, only to ultimately choke convention in the process. The quartet—Noah Sebastian (vocals), Joakim “Jolly” Karlsson (guitar), Nick Ruffilo (bass), and Nick Folio (drums)—materialize with ghostly atmospherics, striking hooks, and the tingles of sensual high-register harmonies uplifted by cinematic production. Racking up over 250M worldwide streams to date and earning acclaim, the band presents an uncompromising and undeniable vision on their third full-length album, ‘THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND’ (Sumerian Records).

“Making the record changed us as songwriters and musicians. In many ways, I feel like it set me free as an artist because every decision made in the writing process was for myself, with no fear for anyone else’s expectations of what our third album should sound like. Be it our fans or our record label.”

They’ve always wielded this level of magic though…

The group’s 2016 self-titled debut, ‘Bad Omens’, yielded fan favorites such as “Glass Houses” and “The Worst In Me” which eclipsed 46 million Spotify streams. On its heels, 2019’s ‘Finding God Before God Finds Me’ spawned “Dethrone” (36 million Spotify streams) and “Careful What You Wish For”. Along the way, they toured with numerous marquee acts and received tastemaker praise.

After their first headline tour was canceled mid-way at the top of the global pandemic, the band found themselves at home in Los Angeles with plenty of time. Where they absorbed and imparted a different palette of unexpected inspirations. Channeling what the frontman describes at times as a “cursive sound” they embraced newfound confidence and boundlessly loose creativity. Anything went in the studio, and all “rules” were broken. Noah and Jolly wrote, produced, and engineered the music themselves while GRAMMY® Award-nominated producer and songwriter Zakk Cervini (Halsey, Grimes, Poppy, blink-182) lent his talents with the mix and master. Challenging himself, Noah decided to “make a track sampling items around the house, none of which were musical instruments”.

This ultimately became the framework for the first single “THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND”. Claps puncture the icy soundscape as his voice stretches from a breathy moan into an evocative and entrancing hook, breaking from a whisper into the seductive chant, “It wasn’t hard to realize. Love’s the death of peace of mind.” It culminates on a climactic scream uplifted by a distorted crunch.

“The whole record really details the loss of peace of mind,” he explains. “The lyrics in the title track are a little more specific in terms of the conflict at the heart of something more intimate and personal.”

By speaking it aloud, Bad Omens offer a level of comfort and empathy, with a sinister shroud. At the same time, they also give rock music a sexy new shape on THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND’.

“Sonically, we want to do something you can’t arrive late or early too,” he leaves off. “You can’t cheat your way to the final act. You have to get on the ride and process it until the end. The songs are meant to be heard from start to finish. We want you to take the whole trip with us.”
