While on stage between songs Chad Gray took to the mic and said, “This is a place where we all belong.  There are no freaks or outsiders because we ALL are freaks and outsiders.”  It was at that moment Gray encouraged over 20,000 fans to high five each other and the crowd quickly started doing so and afterward applauded.  It was a unique moment to say the least.

Of all the young up and coming bands in metal I don’t think there is one that stands out more than Code Orange.  Already gaining the blessing of names like Randy Blythe and Jose Mangin AND touring with bands like Anthrax and Killswitch Engage, Code Orange has taken big steps in a short amount of time to earn the attention of metal crowds.

For the past year and a half Amon Amarth has been travelling the world promoting Jomsviking.  They made the announcement on stage saying they could think of no better city to end that voyage than in Chicago.  Along with warring vikings, a Nordic demon king and a viking ship coming alive surrounded by fire, Amon Amarth raised their horns to the crowd and toasted Chicago.  It was by far one of the best sets of the three day festival.

Steel Panther loves sex and women.  That’s it.  That’s the sum up of the this band and their performance.  I can’t really get into more detail because that’s what stuck out the most.  At one point the band started talking about having lipstick on their crotch and made jokes about who had a disease.  The crowd…loved…it.

Day one of Chicago Open Air was the first time I had the chance to see The Dillinger Escape Plan live, let alone shoot.  The unfortunate truth is that it may be the last time also since the band will be calling it quits in a few months from now.  There was a captivating energy from the band on the Blackcraft stage that everyone took notice of. Even with a faulty speaker in the beginning, the band still impressed thousands in that audience.

Godsmack took the main stage on day two at Chicago Open Air filled with pyro and a drum battle.  The band thanked the crowd for helping make their cover of The Beatles’ “Come Together” a hit (which is also featured in the Justice League movie trailer) and told their favorite city in the midwest “See you in 2018, Chicago!”.  Click on any photo below to open the gallery.
