“The Vans Warped Tour was once a celebrated traveling music festival that launched the careers of numerous punk and alternative bands. However, its legacy has been marred by a pervasive culture of sexual misconduct and misogyny. Over its 24-year run, the festival faced numerous allegations of harassment and assault, with founder Kevin Lyman dismissing such incidents as “part of the culture.
“Despite claims of addressing these issues, Warped Tour continued to provide a platform for artists accused of misconduct, including Jake McElfresh (Front Porch Step) and Ronnie Radke, who faced allegations of inappropriate interactions with underage fans. The male-dominated lineups and “bro culture” fostered an environment where female artists and attendees often felt unsafe or objectified.
“As the #MeToo movement gained momentum, Warped Tour’s failure to adequately address systemic issues of exploitation within its ranks became increasingly untenable. The festival’s demise in 2018 coincided with a reckoning for the broader alternative music scene, which has seen numerous high-profile cases of artists abusing their power and preying on vulnerable young fans.
“While Warped Tour provided a sense of community for many, its legacy is overshadowed by the trauma experienced by countless individuals who fell victim to the predatory behavior it enabled and normalized. As the music industry continues to grapple with its deep-rooted problems of misconduct and gender-based discrimination, the cautionary tale of Warped Tour serves as a reminder of the need for accountability and systemic change.” (Perplexity)
