L.S. Dunes Share “2022” Music Video

L.S. Dunes — guitarist Frank Iero (My Chemical Romance), guitarist Travis Stever (Coheed & Cambria), vocalist Anthony Green (Circa Survive), bassist Tim Payne (Thursday), and drummer Tucker Rule (Thursday) — have shared “2022,” the blistering and dramatic new track off their upcoming debut album, PAST LIVES, due November 11 via Fantasy Records.

Watch the track’s psycho-animated video here. Pre-order Past Lives here.

“I wrote 2022 when I was struggling to communicate the pain that I was in during the pandemic,” says Green. “I survived an overdose the previous year and was feeling like I would never be free of the obsession to get high, or just get out of my own skin and that I was only going to continue to hurt everyone I loved. It was a cop-out and easier for me to write a song rather than get honest and real with the people in my life – cry for help in a way. If there’s a positive take away, it’s that it’s never a burden to the people you love to share your feelings no matter how dark or painful it might be.”

“2022” follows the late August release of the band’s first single “Permanent Rebellion,” which drew praise from Stereogum, NME, Consequence, Ones to Watch, Brooklyn Vegan, Revolver, Alternative Press, and Loudwire, among many others.

LS. Dunes made their highly anticipated debut performance this past weekend at Chicago’s RIOT FEST. Playing to a packed, early afternoon crowd, the band ran through several songs from the new album, a taste of the energetic, cathartic shows fans will experience on their upcoming tour.

The impetus for the trippy “2022” video has its own story. At the conclusion of the video shoot for “Permanent Rebellion,” Iero, jet-lagged from a sold-out stadium show in Germany the night before with his other band, noticed that the shadow reflections playing on the white walls of the studio made the band look like a “hippy band that rips” and the concept for “2022” visual was born. The band shot footage with the esteemed My Good Eye Visuals (Clutch, GWAR, Killswitch Engage) and then sent it to director Robby Staebler (drummer extraordinaire for the mighty All Them Witches) with one piece of direction only: We want it to feel like “the song that saved your life, while you are on LSD… in the desert.”

After the band’s next show at Sacramento’s AFTERSHOCK FESTIVAL on October 8 L.S. Dunes will hit the road for a U.S. tour this November — all dates are below.

PAST LIVES TRACK LISTING:
2022
“Antibodies”
“Grey Veins”
“Like Forever”
“Blender”
“Past Lives”
“It Takes Time”
“Bombsquad”
“Grifter”
Permanent Rebellion
“Sleep Cult”

L.S. DUNES super-charge their heavy anthems with punk energy into a sound unlike anything that has come before it. From the gripping, theatrical opener “2022,” and the crunchy, frenetic earworm “Like Forever,” to the pummeling, expansive “Permanent Rebellion,” and the disarming album closer, “Sleep Cult,” Past Lives is an electrifying and emotional ride.

Past Lives was produced by Will Yip (Turnstile, Circa Survive, Quicksand) and recorded at his Studio 4 Recording in Philadelphia, PA. Going deep on issues of fearlessness, dependency, nonconformity, and impermanence, writing for the album was a collaborative effort.

After the shock of the pandemic shutdown, the close friends and mutual admirers urgently realized that “tomorrow” is not promised. “We never knew if we would ever get to play these songs together; in fact none of us lifelong musicians really knew if we’d ever be able to play music for a live audience ever again,” Iero recounts. “‘Permanent Rebellion’ is about taking back what is rightfully yours.”

Rule adds, “We wanted to do something where you can hear all our bands in it and yet, not have it sound like any one in particular. Our roots are punk rock and hardcore, and the vibe is hope for all the lost souls.

Original, aggressive, and intense, L.S. DUNES is the next great leap in rock’s grand evolution.

AWOLNATION Premieres a New Video for “Freaking Me Out”

Today, AWOLNATION dropped their new track “Freaking Me Out” via Better Noise Music, along with an official music video. Known for their ability to write hauntingly stark rock anthems like their world famous hits “Run” and “Sail,” AWOLNATION returns with new original music, after the release of their covers and collaborations album My Echo, My Shadow, My Covers and Me earlier this year. That project included collaborations with BeckJewelPortugal. The ManRise AgainstTaylor Hanson, and Brandon Boyd of Incubus, among others. The band is set to start their “Falling Forward” North America headline tour featuring special guests Badflower and The Mysterines on October 6. Tickets are on-sale now. Aaron Bruno shared his inspiration behind the song: “I had a sense of a hopeful paranoia of sorts in creating this song, plus you can disco dance to it, or bang your head. Or both. It’s up to you.”

The cinematic music video for “Freaking Me Out” introduces a world that feels both futuristic and bygone. Like a memory of a time that is still to come.  The video, entirely in black and white and drawing inspiration from classic film and paranoid fiction, complements the song’s high-strung energy and infectious melody. Directed by Eliot Charof, the music video is the first in a series of three interlocking new videos from the band that explore a looming overly digitized future.

Avatar Share New Song “Valley of Disease”

The heavy metal ‘n’ roll, dark, madcap visionaries collectively known as AVATAR — vocalist Johannes Eckerström (vocals), guitarists Jonas Jarlsby and Tim Öhrström, bassist Henrik Sandelin, and drummer John Alfredsson — have emerged from deep within the Swedish forest in which they have been working on their ninth album to grace fans and listeners with a brand new song.

Listen to and watch the lyric video for “Valley of Disease” here

“There is a sickness, a stranger, and a harmful way,” says Eckerström. “A twisted landscape untouched by the sun. I leave the rest up to either you or me, but never both at the same time. You can only enter this place alone, and my path isn’t yours. Your secret is safe with me, but so is mine.”

Avatar enjoyed quite a productive summer, traipsing North America on a successful headline tour. They next embarked on some of the biggest shows of the career — a trek with Iron Maiden, supporting the band in stadiums in Brazil. Avatar also played arenas supporting Sabaton. They secured slots at major festivals globally — Inkcarceration, Cadott Fest, Summer Breeze, and Bloodstock along the way.

Avatar add Veil of Maya in the UK and Europe this February and March 2023 on the Dance Devil Dance Tour. All dates are in the graphic below. More U.S. touring will be announced in due time.

As for Avatar’s mission?

There are no weapons on this planet that can challenge might of the electric guitar. For decades, metal has been the most powerful force known to man. Its sonic teeth have gnawed through the status quo over and over, pushing the boundaries for what can be created in the marriage between blood and machine. If a Mount Rushmore were to be carved for all the titans of the genre, it would span the entire globe many times over. It’s a burning beacon, the misfits, and rebels.

As time has passed, much of the scene has become divided in two equally stale camps. The first is forever stuck in the past, no longer seeking to lead. The second are those who have forgotten the most important ingredients to what made metal what it was and must remain. They’ve lost touch with the devil. They’ve forgotten how to move. In a genre best experienced with your whole body, they’ve lost the lust.

Avatar, however, have NOT lost anything.

It is with this fire in their bellies that they continue to craft their next album.

Last fall, Avatar, who are known to smash the boundaries between band, theater troupe, and cinematic masterminds with a series of celebrated albums and videos, and the immersive world of Avatar Country, a fantastical land where metal rules supreme, released four new songs. Avatar also previously announced they signed to Thirty Tigers and have launched their own Black Waltz Records imprint.

The Pretty Reckless Share Acoustic Rendering of “Harley Darling”

THE PRETTY RECKLESS — Taylor Momsen [vocals, guitar], Ben Phillips [guitar, keys, piano], Mark Damon [bass], and Jamie Perkins [drums] — will release Other Worlds, a new collection of material, on November 4 via Fearless Records. Pre-order it here.

Today, the band has shared the visualizer for the absolutely stunning acoustic version of “Harley Darling.” Watch + listen here.

The Pretty Reckless dressed down this favorite from Death By Rock And Roll to its bare essence with a stirring and striking acoustic performance.

“‘Harley Darling’ is a love letter to Kato Khandwala,” says Momsen. “It’s as simple as that. So many of us have stories of losing loved ones, especially now, and I hope this song can be used in other’s healing as it was in my own.”

The band previously shared the video for “Got So High.” Watch it here. You can also listen to and watch the visualizer for the remix of the song here

Since 2008, The Pretty Reckless have given rock ‘n’ roll the jumpstart it needed for a new generation. 2021’s Death By Rock and Roll elevated them to rarified air. With its impact, the four-piece carved out a place in history as the first female-fronted band to have back-to-back No. 1 singles at the active rock format and the first female-fronted act to have seven No. 1 singles on the Billboard Rock Radio Chart. Beyond acclaim from V Magazine, The TODAY Show, PEOPLE, Spin, ELLE, American Songwriter, Bustle, ABC News Nightline, The Daily Beast, and more, it bowed at #1 on the Billboard Top Album Sales Chart. It also notably boasted collaborations with legends such as Soundgarden’s Matt Cameron and Kim Thayil on “Only Love Can Save Me Now” and Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello on “And So It Went.”

Through and through, The Pretty Reckless didn’t simply throw the rulebook out the window; they set the fucker on fire on the way down. Introducing a bold vision unlike anything else this era had seen, Momsen’s bluesy seductive howl collided with revved-up and raucous rhythms, sweetly stoned melodies, and enough unpredictability in the studio and onstage to bring the danger back to rock ‘n’ roll. By sticking to their guns, the musicians reaped the rewards of such uncompromising fearlessness.

This boundlessness drives Other Worlds, where they deliver their first proper acoustic recordings, unexpected covers, and other reimaginings, covering new territory once more.

“For a long time, we’ve been trying to figure out an alternative way of releasing music, including songs we love that didn’t make our records, covers, and alternate versions,” explains Momsen. “We found a way to do this coherently and consistently with Other Worlds. We’re a rock band, so there are lots of electric guitars on our records. However, we’ve gotten incredible feedback from fans about our acoustic performances, and we’d never put those out in any real format. So, this is a different take on the traditional format of a record and a stripped back version of us that our fans haven’t really heard before, but it’s still us.”

“You get to hear a different side of Taylor’s vocals,” adds Phillips. “It was a chance for us to see what she would sound like singing songs by people who have inspired us. It also gave us some perspective of where we need to go and what we need to be if we want to be that good.”

The record collates striking acoustic renditions of personal favorites accompanied by some very special guests. The recording of Elvis Costello’s “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding” served as Momsen’s first cover originally performed for the Fearless at Home livestream in the midst of COVID. As another pandemic-era cover, Matt Cameron played guitar and sang as Taylor powered an airy and lithe reimagining of Soundgarden’s “Halfway There” from King Animal, generating hundreds of thousands of views on its initial post. Iconic multi-instrumentalist, producer, and artist Alain Johannes handled guitar on The Pretty Reckless’ pensive and poetic interpretation of “The Keeper,” originally by Chris Cornell, while David Bowie pianist Mike Garson performed a stirring piano movement for The Thin White Duke’s “Quicksand.”

Puscifer Usher in Halloween Weekend with Two Streaming Events

Puscifer, whose October 2020 concert film, “Existential Reckoning: Live At Arcosanti” broke online attendance records and fully explored what the at-home concert experience could be, celebrate the Halloween weekend with the release of two concert-meets-feature films: “V is for Versatile: A Puscifer Concert Film featuring music from the V is for… era” and “Parole Violator: A Puscifer Concert Film featuring Conditions of My Parole.” Watch the trailer here.

Meeting at the intersection of music and theater, Puscifer is known for their thematic, multimedia-laced tours. From a “Hee Haw”-style jamboree to a televangelist revival, from sitting ringside at a Lucha Libre match to the advent of Agent Dick Merkin and the Pusciforce, Puscifer’s transition from live performances to film is a natural extension of the music-meets-acting troupe. The pandemic-induced dawn of the at-home concert experience provided Maynard James Keenan, Mat Mitchell and Carina Round with the tools to turn to film, having now released two movies to date: 2020’s “Existential Reckoning: Live at Arcosanti” and 2021’s “Billy D and The Hall of Feathered Serpents featuring Money $hot by Puscifer.”

“Those with creative minds are restless. Lockdown was only physical, not mental,” offers Keenan. “The Pandemic was the perfect springboard and opportunity for us all to flex our creative muscles. Here is more evidence.”

Hildy Berger adds: “When life gives you lemons, don’t stop at making lemonade. Plant summa them lemons, grow some goddamn lemon trees, and change your pissy world view. Hell! Make some dang Limoncello!”

“V is for Versatile: A Puscifer Concert Film featuring music from the V is for… era”

Puscifer take you into the famed studios of Los Angeles’ Sunset Sound, where everyone from Led Zeppelin to Van Halen to Elton John and Tom Waits recorded classic albums. In this live performance piece, the band invites fans behind-the-scenes as they re-interpret and re-record songs from their V is for… era. Agent Dick Merkin, Major Douche, the briefcase and a few surprise cameos are interspersed amongst the studio footage.

“Parole Violator: A Puscifer Concert Film featuring Conditions of My Parole”

Billy D is in jail, Hildy is on the war path and Peter Merkin, as usual, is up to no good. The saga of the Bergers continues as Puscifer pairs the duo’s ongoing melodrama with a live, track-by-track re-imagination of the band’s critically-acclaimed 2011 album, Conditions of My Parole. Visually, “Parole Violator” is evocative of Keenan’s North Arizona homestead, with Puscifer’s performance married to striking visuals, dramatic lighting, and in a nod to the band’s 2011/2012 tour in support of the collection, closes with a campfire sing-a-long.

The films, which premiere on Oct. 28 at 12:00 pm pacific/3:00 pm eastern/8:00 pm UK/9:00 pm EU, remain on-demand for 72 hours. Tickets as well as a selection of limited edition merchandise, exclusive to attendees, are available now via puscifertv.com. Early bird tickets are on-sale through Oct. 21.

Both “V is for Versatile” and “Parole Violator” have album companions, available on vinyl, CD and streaming on Nov. 11. Pre-orders are also available now via puscifertv.com.

Thrice Release New Track “Open Your Eyes and Dream”

California rock band Thrice have shared their newest single “Open Your Eyes and Dream,” out now via Epitaph Records. With a heavy bassline and scorching vocals, the new track carries Thrice’s unique brand of self-awareness that keeps listeners coming back for me. Fans can stream “Open Your Eyes and Dream” now. Watch the music video below:

On the new single, vocalist Dustin Kensrue shares, “It’s so very easy to believe that big systemic issues can’t change because we’ve lived with them our whole lives. But if you look back and zoom out a bit it’s easy to see that this feeling of permeance and inevitability is just an illusion. Most things seem impossible until they happen. This song is about opening our eyes to that reality, and being willing to dream something better into existence.”

“Open Your Eyes and Dream” follows Thrice’s acclaimed album Horizons/East, released in September 2021 via Epitaph RecordsThe album conveys a palpable sense of danger, determination, and possibility and exemplifies art as a work of recognition — the human task of perceiving oneself amid details, disasters, and blessings as a relentlessly relational phenomenon among others. In this, Horizons/East is the rare rock album on which interrelatedness is a theme, painting an adventurous and lush landscape mixed by Scott Evans that the band self-produced and recorded at their own New Grass Studio.

With Horizons/EastDustin Kensrue and his bandmates address, with candor and courage, the fragile and awkward arrangements that pass for civilization, while inviting us to dwell more knowingly within our own lives. Without surrendering any of the energy and hard edge of their previous albums, they’ve given us a profoundly meditative work which serves as a musical summons to everyday attentiveness.

Since forming Thrice with guitarist Teppei Teranishi, bassist Eddie Breckenridge, and drummer Riley Breckenridge in 1998, Kensrue has never been one to back down from a mental fight. Horizons/Eastcommunicates comfort with uncertainty, it’s uncertainty as the beginning of wonder. Not knowing something for certain can occasion a blossom, an opportunity, as opposed to a dead end.

This uncertainty is something the band seems to embrace with their entire career, and especially in their approach to this record, building out their own studio and recording completely on their own, unsure of what exactly they could extract from themselves this time around. Thrice seems ever eager to step out into these spaces unknown to them, unsure of where their feet will land, and the most recent record is no exception.

Horizons/East is available now at https://thrice.ffm.to/horizonseast.

Formed in 1998, the Orange County-based four-piece is widely regarded as one of the most innovative rock bands of their generation. Featuring frontman Dustin Kensrue, guitarist Teppei Teranishi, bassist Eddie Breckenridge, and drummer Riley Breckenridge.

Thrice will be performing at select festivals throughout the United States this fall, as well as celebrating the 20th anniversary of The Illusion Of Safety with a small run of shows in December. Tickets and more information available at www.thrice.net.

Serj Tankian Announces Perplex Cities EP

Serj Tankian, the prolific artist, activist, best known for System Of A Down, is releasing a new 5 song EP titled Perplex Cities on Oct. 21 via Serjical Strike. Perplex Cities is his second EP in the last couple of years, following his 2021 release of the hard-hitting Elasticity EP.

As an artist who has brought forth diverse types of music with each release, it’s no surprise that this EP explores new musical territory.

In his words, “This whole collection of songs within Perplex Cities is a completely different sound than what I’ve done before. More electronic, subtle and deeper in terms of its layers of presentation musically. Perplex Cities gives off an aura that is unique and unlike my previous releases”.

Before reaching the music streaming platforms next month, each track off the EP will be made available via a free augmented reality experience featuring Tankian presenting the five tracks himself in an intimate fashion. Via the app he will be appearing in the same space as the listener-viewer to explain the music and listen along.

The first such immersive experience is available now, with the release of “Pop Imperialism” via the Arloopa app. Check it out HERE.

Over the course of the next four weeks, the remaining 4 songs from Perplex Cities will be made available in the same fashion, with each track being released successively after another. The full EP will be available on all major streaming platforms thereafter, on Oct. 21.

“I’m always trying to create new and interesting ways to connect with people via my music. We made some amazing videos for the last EP Elasticity, so I wanted to try something different for Perplex Cities. I love the idea of appearing in the room with someone listening to my music. It’s intimate, fun, and different.”

Perplex Cities tracklist:
Pop Imperialism
The Race
I Spoke Up
Rumi Loves His Cars
Forgive Me Father

For those interested in his musically composed art, Tankian will be debuting new paintings at Stephanie’s Gallery in the Los Angeles area beginning Oct. 9. The exhibition is titled “Shapeshift – a dynamic dive into diversity” and extends through Nov. 1. As with his previous artworks, each of these new paintings will be accompanied by a musical score that corresponds with the paint on canvas and made accessible via the same Arloopa app.

On April 29 of next year, fans of Tankian will also be treated to a unique concert with the debut of “Invocations” at The Soraya in Northridge. Composed and performed by Serj, these new works are symphonic, operatic, emotive and will bring the CSUN Symphony, ethnic instrumentalists and a variety of diverse vocalists including Tankian together on stage with a choir for this very special evening of live musical performance. Tickets for this concert are available HERE

Apocalyptica Delivers Flawless Metal Symphony in Montclair, NJ

After a series of postponements and rescheduled dates, Apocalyptica has finally returned to the US to promote the by now two-year-old latest album, Cell-0. Formed in 1993, the Finnish symphonic metal band may have gotten its start with admittedly badass cello covers of Metallica’s greatest hits but have since found their strength in original compositions and truly bombastic anthems.

Thursday night’s show at The Wellmont Theater in Montclair, NJ offered a solid setlist with tracks spanning much of the band’s discography. From the old favorite “Path,” (a track originally released in 2000 and more recently rediscovered by a larger audience due to its inclusion in the Director’s Cut release of Death Stranding), to the more recent “En Route to Mayhem.” Metallica covers included “Nothing Else Matters” and “Seek & Destroy.” Touring vocalist mainstay, Franky Perez, regretfully fell sick while on tour, but Wheel vocalist James Lascelles did a truly fantastic job subbing in for the vocal tracks. I was particularly fond of his rendition of “Not Strong Enough” and “I Don’t Care.”

Throughout the hour and a half set, Apocalyptica delivered a remarkable rollercoaster of emotions (I’m looking at you “Farewell”), and outstanding showmanship. Cellists Eicca Toppinen, Perttu Kivilaasko, Paavo Lötjönen and drummer Mikko Sirén have been performing together at 110% for the better part of the last twenty years and this tour is no different. Every performance is a ridiculously good time, whether you’re a casual or die hard fan.

If you’ve been on the fence, go ahead and buy that ticket. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Apocalyptica Setlist:
1. Ashes of the Modern World
2. Path
3. Grace
4. I’m Not Jesus (with James Lascelles)
5. Not Strong Enough (with James Lascelles)
6. Rise
7. En Route to Mayhem
8. I’ll Get Through It (with James Lascelles)
9. Shadowmaker (with James Lascelles)
10. I Don’t Care (with James Lascelles)
11. Nothing Else Matters (Metallica cover)
12. Inquisition Symphony (Sepultura cover)
13. Seek & Destroy (Metallica cover)
Encore:
14. Farewell
15. In the Hall of the Mountain King (Edvard Grieg cover)
