Serj Tankian Announces Perplex Cities EP

Serj Tankian, the prolific artist, activist, best known for System Of A Down, is releasing a new 5 song EP titled Perplex Cities on Oct. 21 via Serjical Strike. Perplex Cities is his second EP in the last couple of years, following his 2021 release of the hard-hitting Elasticity EP.

As an artist who has brought forth diverse types of music with each release, it’s no surprise that this EP explores new musical territory.

In his words, “This whole collection of songs within Perplex Cities is a completely different sound than what I’ve done before. More electronic, subtle and deeper in terms of its layers of presentation musically. Perplex Cities gives off an aura that is unique and unlike my previous releases”.

Before reaching the music streaming platforms next month, each track off the EP will be made available via a free augmented reality experience featuring Tankian presenting the five tracks himself in an intimate fashion. Via the app he will be appearing in the same space as the listener-viewer to explain the music and listen along.

The first such immersive experience is available now, with the release of “Pop Imperialism” via the Arloopa app. Check it out HERE.

Over the course of the next four weeks, the remaining 4 songs from Perplex Cities will be made available in the same fashion, with each track being released successively after another. The full EP will be available on all major streaming platforms thereafter, on Oct. 21.

“I’m always trying to create new and interesting ways to connect with people via my music. We made some amazing videos for the last EP Elasticity, so I wanted to try something different for Perplex Cities. I love the idea of appearing in the room with someone listening to my music. It’s intimate, fun, and different.”

Perplex Cities tracklist:
Pop Imperialism
The Race
I Spoke Up
Rumi Loves His Cars
Forgive Me Father

For those interested in his musically composed art, Tankian will be debuting new paintings at Stephanie’s Gallery in the Los Angeles area beginning Oct. 9. The exhibition is titled “Shapeshift – a dynamic dive into diversity” and extends through Nov. 1. As with his previous artworks, each of these new paintings will be accompanied by a musical score that corresponds with the paint on canvas and made accessible via the same Arloopa app.

On April 29 of next year, fans of Tankian will also be treated to a unique concert with the debut of “Invocations” at The Soraya in Northridge. Composed and performed by Serj, these new works are symphonic, operatic, emotive and will bring the CSUN Symphony, ethnic instrumentalists and a variety of diverse vocalists including Tankian together on stage with a choir for this very special evening of live musical performance. Tickets for this concert are available HERE

Apocalyptica Delivers Flawless Metal Symphony in Montclair, NJ

After a series of postponements and rescheduled dates, Apocalyptica has finally returned to the US to promote the by now two-year-old latest album, Cell-0. Formed in 1993, the Finnish symphonic metal band may have gotten its start with admittedly badass cello covers of Metallica’s greatest hits but have since found their strength in original compositions and truly bombastic anthems.

Thursday night’s show at The Wellmont Theater in Montclair, NJ offered a solid setlist with tracks spanning much of the band’s discography. From the old favorite “Path,” (a track originally released in 2000 and more recently rediscovered by a larger audience due to its inclusion in the Director’s Cut release of Death Stranding), to the more recent “En Route to Mayhem.” Metallica covers included “Nothing Else Matters” and “Seek & Destroy.” Touring vocalist mainstay, Franky Perez, regretfully fell sick while on tour, but Wheel vocalist James Lascelles did a truly fantastic job subbing in for the vocal tracks. I was particularly fond of his rendition of “Not Strong Enough” and “I Don’t Care.”

Throughout the hour and a half set, Apocalyptica delivered a remarkable rollercoaster of emotions (I’m looking at you “Farewell”), and outstanding showmanship. Cellists Eicca Toppinen, Perttu Kivilaasko, Paavo Lötjönen and drummer Mikko Sirén have been performing together at 110% for the better part of the last twenty years and this tour is no different. Every performance is a ridiculously good time, whether you’re a casual or die hard fan.

If you’ve been on the fence, go ahead and buy that ticket. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Apocalyptica Setlist:
1. Ashes of the Modern World
2. Path
3. Grace
4. I’m Not Jesus (with James Lascelles)
5. Not Strong Enough (with James Lascelles)
6. Rise
7. En Route to Mayhem
8. I’ll Get Through It (with James Lascelles)
9. Shadowmaker (with James Lascelles)
10. I Don’t Care (with James Lascelles)
11. Nothing Else Matters (Metallica cover)
12. Inquisition Symphony (Sepultura cover)
13. Seek & Destroy (Metallica cover)
Encore:
14. Farewell
15. In the Hall of the Mountain King (Edvard Grieg cover)

Lacuna Coil Releases New Single & Video: “Swamped XX”

Italian metal legends Lacuna Coil present their new single “Swamped XX” today. This song follows the previously launched track, “Tight Rope XX“, which is also taken off the upcoming re-issue, Comalies XX, set to be released on October 14th through Century Media Records. Watch “Swamped XX” here (directed, filmed and edited by Trilathera.

True to the maxim “never change a winning team”, Lacuna Coil decided to release the opener of the album – like its original predecessor “Swamped” (2002) – as a single again. Same energy and drama as 20 years ago, but dressed for 2022 and ready to win over old fans, as well as new fans, alike.

Dropkick Murphys “All You Fonies” Single And Video Out Now

Just a few weeks before the release of Dropkick Murphys’new album This Machine Still Kills Fascists–a unique collaboration with Woody Guthrie–the band has released the new single and video, “All You Fonies.” This union anthem takes Dropkick Murphys back to their roots – and the heart of their connection with Woody GuthrieGuthrie’s ode to the National Maritime Union (NMU) preaches the strength in numbers and the power of solidarity:

“For me to try to change this whole big mess around by myself / I wouldn’t last longer than a snowball in hell / But there’s a hundred thousand of me now, and we fought like hell to get here / So you fight like hell to keep what we shed blood to earn.”

The cinematic video for “All You Fonies” was shot at the historic Roman amphitheater Les Arènes de Nîmes while Dropkick Murphys were on tour in France earlier this year. Watch the video here:

Find the “All You Fonies” single here.

Meanwhile, Dropkick Murphys have announced the support lineup for their return to Europe in early 2023 for a month-long tour. Dropkick Murphys will be joined by very special guests Pennywise, plus openers The Rumjacks and Jesse Ahern. The tour kicks off January 13 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and includes a January 14 show in Dublin, Ireland, with Dublin’s own acoustic rockers The ScratchPennywise joins the tour January 16 in Newcastle, England and continues through the end of the run in Mannheim, Germany on February 18.

This Machine Still Kills Fascists will be released digitally and on CD September 30 via the band’s Dummy Luck Music / [PIAS], with a special edition vinyl out November 11. TMSKF is unlike anything Dropkick Murphys have done to date: A full album of songs that bring Woody Guthrie’s words to life. Not a tribute album or a collection of covers, This Machine Still Kills Fascists is a collaboration between Dropkick Murphys and Woody Guthrie – artists separated by time and space, but connected by a common philosophy – to create something entirely new.

Today–September 14–Dropkick Murphys appear at AMERICANAFEST in Nashville, where fans can enjoy a Q&A with band members discussing the new album and their inclusion in the Folk Americana Roots Hall of Fame, as well as a short acoustic performance of songs from This Machine Still Kills FascistsDropkick Murphys’ first single from This Machine Still Kills Fascists“Two 6’s Upside Down,” is currently at #11 and climbing on the Americana radio single chart.

Next month, Dropkick Murphys will launch their first-ever reserved seating theater tour–This Machine…Theater Tour–October 20 in support of this very special and powerful acoustic album. Jaime Wyatt will be the main support on this U.S. tour – as well as joining DKM on stage for the duet “Never Git Drunk No More” – and Jesse Ahern will open the shows. Dropkick Murphys in-progress fall tour dates also include a few U.S. fairs in September and a headlining slot at Punk In The Park in Orange County, CA in November.

In the annals of 21st-century alternative rock history, there are few artists who cast a longer or more peculiar shadow than Finnish Love Metal pioneer Ville Valo. After all, his band HIM were easily among the most iconic and idiosyncratic groups of the millenium. Zealously revered, gleefully reviled but impossible to ignore, their music left an indelible mark on a worldwide legion of fans. The scarlet letters stood for His Infernal Majesty. Their founder stood for something delightedly out of step with the status quo.

“We only hoped to temporarily redirect hard rock’s blood flow from the nether regions towards the heart”, reminisces Ville Valo, the singer, songwriter and primus motor of HIM. Judging by the monolithic presence of the Heartagram in any account of music this side of the millennium it’s apparent that he succeeded.

Inspired by everyone from Poe to Bukowski and tinged by a penchant for perfumed Sabbathian gloom, Valo’s creative lovechild would produce eight era-defining studio releases and over ten million record sales, not forgetting a Grammy nomination, countless magazine covers, critical acclaim, and the veneration of a generation. Thus it came as no surprise that the news of a farewell tour in 2017 was greeted with shock and disbelief among devotees and endless speculation as to what or who was to take up the velvet mantle.

“As fun as the funeral rites for HIM were, it took me more than a few moons to lick my wounds in the shadow of the Heartagram and come up with an excuse to strum and hum again. Eventually I decided to put a leash on my beloved black dog and we started howling together instead of barking at each other. That’s how VV was born”.

Starbenders Release New Single + Music Video “Blood Moon”

Atlanta-based glam punk rockers Starbenders have today dropped a new single and music video for Blood Moon (out via Sumerian Records). Speaking on today’s release, the band shares:

It’s been feeling like everything is crumbling around us as we seem to be hurtling toward an apocalyptic destiny. At some point, you come to the understanding that things have been this way since recorded history. Now we’ve been down for so long that it’s beginning to look like up. Instead of succumbing to frustration and rage, we decided to become one with the chaos and make some noise. Blood Moon is our catharsis.

Atlanta alt-glam band Starbenders will release their hotly anticipated single, Blood Moon, on September 13 through Sumerian Records, fresh on the heels of 2020’s Love Potion studio album and serving as the follow-up to 2019’s Japanese Rooms EP. These are words similar to those which you will read on countless press releases, but there really isn’t anyone else out there doing what Starbenders have been doing since forming in 2014: The intoxicating combination of ‘70s glitter and ‘80s glam with new wave and new romantic, seduced into this new decade by four thrilling musicians and, in frontwoman Kimi Shelter, one of the most exciting songwriters in contemporary rock & roll.

The Lights, Camera, Faction tour slayed Providence, Rhode Island 08.28.2022

The “Lights, Camera, Factions” tour is taking Interpol, Spoon, and Water From Your Eyes across North America. Witnessing this bill not just once but twice, front row and center was an experience that I will never forget. Firstly, we have Brooklyn’s Water From Your Eyes with an unforgettable wall of sound that reverberates through the entire crowd.

The experimental band has a lot in common with bowling, a pass-time of theirs as singer Rachel Brown stated. What could bowling possibly have in common with an experimental band from Brooklyn you might ask? Much like a determined bowling ball, their thunderous opener could never be confused with any other band in the scene. Once you get your wits about you, the rumble rocks you around like the pins down the lane after a strike.

Water From Your Eyes has curated a unique sound all of their own that piqued my interest. I noticed a familiarity in their style at my first show in Asbury Park. After catching them again, it hit me; They were from the artistic chaos that is New York. I felt at home even though I was nowhere near. This time around I felt prepared to face their explosive intro head on. Even though I knew what was about to start playing, I was still startled at the drop of the beat. Brown was joined by guitarists Nate Amos and Jared Ashdown and they immediately dived right into their set.  The marriage of trance-like melodic vocals laced over jarring power riffs is the name of the game for Water From Your Eyes.

Spoon took the stage with much pizzazz and the audience burst into an energetic uproar. Throughout their set the band went through an array from their decades worth catalog that evoked deep emotions from fans. It was beautiful to witness everyone’s reactions. Multi-instrumentalists Alex Fischel and Gerardo Larios, bassist Ben Trokan, drummer Jim Eno, and singer-guitarist Britt Daniel performed alongside each other with amazing chemistry and relentless enthusiasm. Spoon is an all around entertaining band that has acquired a loyal fan base over the years. Their sound is bright and different from what I customarily listen to. Prior to this tour, I never experienced Spoon’s music and now they have acquired a new fan with me.

Headliner Interpol is in my opinion the greatest thing to ever come out of New York City. Before the venue opened its doors, I mingled with fans prior to showtime. Many said that they had been waiting for the band to play in Rhode Island for a long time. Anticipation for the band could be palpated and came to a brief standstill the moment the introductory track started playing. The musicians took the stage, the crowd erupted, and at that moment in time nothing outside Bold Point Park mattered.

Front man and guitarist Paul Banks, guitarist-keyboardist-backing vocalist Daniel Kessler, drummer Sam Fogarino together with the support of bassist Brad Truax, and Brandon Curtis on keys put on an amazing show with surgical precision. Interpol has been creating an immersive experience for its concert attendees. From their set lights down to Banks’ sunglasses as many at the barricade seemed to comment on. All eyes and ears were glued on Interpol from beginning to end with emphatic sing-alongs from the audience. After the lights went on some people were expecting more music. At which point in time I explained once the crew was on stage, the show was indeed over. I can’t say I blame them. When a band as amazing as Interpol captures your attention, time is relative and Pace Is The Trick.

LAMB OF GOD Drops GRAYSCALE Single Before Tomorrow’s Tour Kickoff

With potent and palpable intensity, the momentum continues for Omens, arguably Lamb Of God‘s most aggressive and ambitious work to date … and today the Grammy-nominated goliath unleash their third single “Grayscale” from the forthcoming Omens album out October 7 on Epic Records.

Willie Adler says ‘Grayscale’ has just a smack you in the face, bit of hardcore feel to it. We had basically finished writing the record and I wrote this song thinking it won’t necessarily be a Lamb song. I sent it to Josh Wilbur, our producer, to check out and he responded with ‘Perfect, this is the last song we need for the record!'”

The heavy “Grayscale” includes Blythe’s vibrantly unhinged vocal attack plus Morton and Adler‘s threatening riffage to challenge and devastate headbangers alike and also features Cruz and Campbell‘s unstoppable rhythms.

Across their career Lamb Of God grew from basement shows and grimy DIY venues to arena headliners. The New Wave of American Heavy Metal architects earned a reverence akin to musical forefathers (and road companions) MetallicaSlayer, and Megadeth. For millions of headbangers, Lamb Of God are simply the most important contemporary metal band in the world, whose timeless songs became anthems in the heavy metal songbook, with gargantuan vocals born from both righteous anger and devotion, and unrivaled riffs for the ages.

The new single is available everywhere for download and streaming. The Omensalbum arrives on October 7, 2022, on Epic Records. Don’t miss the gargantuan Omens Tour this fall.

Omens follows 2020’s self-titled No. 1 Hard Rock Album, saluted by the likes of Rolling Stone and NMEOmensis perhaps their angriest album yet. Produced by longtime collaborator Josh Wilbur (Korn, Megadeth), Omensis a vicious new testament for the Richmond, Virginia-based band, a furious entry in their beloved catalog. “The world is crazy and keeps changing. Omens is a reaction to the state of the world,” Blythe explains. “It’s a very pissed-off record.” He pauses for emphasis. “It is extremely pissed-off.”

The New Wave Of American Heavy Metal architects tracked Omens at Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles, California, a location that birthed classics from The Doors, The Ramones, and Soundgarden, among others. “The inner workings of the band have never been better,” explains guitarist Mark Morton. “You can hear it in Omens. You can see it in our performances, and if you’re around us for five minutes, you can feel it.”

The Omens album pre-order is live now at Lamb-Of-God.com, boasting special bundles and several exclusive items, including colored vinyl, shirts, hoodies, box sets, and CDs with an alternate color cover.
