Lindsey Stirling’s New Christmas LP Out Today

Lindsey Stirling Snow Waltz

Today, dancing pop-violin sensation Lindsey Stirling releases her enchanting Christmas album Snow Waltz via Concord Records (out on vinyl November 18th). Laced with immersive arrangements and mesmerizing melodies, Snow Waltz emerges as a remarkable new entry in the holiday-music canon, proving Stirling’s extraordinary gift as an instrumental storyteller.

Listen here.

Alongside the album, Lindsey also released a new video for focus track “Snow Waltz.” The video marries eeriness featuring skeleton makeup, rib cage costumes with the light-hearted side of Christmas and being home for the holidays. Stirling elegantly dances her way through a snowy room full of presents, Christmas trees and a feast filled table.

As Popdust puts it, “Lindsey Stirling refuses to make a boring holiday album.” All throughout Snow Waltz, Stirling matches the stunning complexity of her arrangements with warmly effusive energy. Rooted in her ineffably expressive violin work and graced with so many cinematic details (darkly sweeping percussion, lilting flute melodies, bright and sprightly glockenspiel tones), focus track “Snow Waltz” immediately conjures that delightfully eerie mood, wholly embodying the limitless imagination at the heart of Stirling’s artistry. On “Joy to the World,” for instance, another focus track, she joined forces with Gladius (longtime Grammy nominated producer with credits including Demi Lovato & Justin Bieber) and orchestrator Stephen Anderson to create a gloriously stomping, Celtic-inspired take on the 18th century Christmas carol.

“Celtic was always my favorite music to play when I was younger; the rhythms felt way more exciting to me than the classical music you tend to perform in violin lessons,” Stirling says. “As I was choosing songs for the album, ‘Joy to the World’ really spoke to my Celtic soul, and it was so much fun to put together something that bounces so quickly from major to minor and back again.”

On “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” Stirling delivers an elegant violin performance adorned with a beat-heavy track sprinkled with her hypnotic and heavenly vocals. In perfect contrast, flamenco-infused “Feliz Navidad” is romantic, fun and upbeat, featuring Mark Ballas’ guitar playing talents (a dancer/choreographer/musician/actor who served as her partner on the 25th season of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars”).

“Little Drummer Boy” features a powerhouse performance from her longtime touring drummer Drew Steen, while “O Come Emmanuel” unfolds with a brooding intensity that instantly lends the album an irresistible touch of drama. And in reimagining “Deck the Halls,” Stirling deliberately pushed the boundaries of interpretation, weaving in elements of “O Come, All Ye Faithful,” “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” and “Silent Night” to create a captivating medley that gracefully cycles through a dizzying whirlwind of time signatures. “Magic” ft. David Archuleta holds powerful significance for Stirling. The bittersweet but uplifting ballad was sparked from a profound moment of Stirling’s life, when her sisters and mom shared loving and fun memories around her father’s passing.

The “theatrically whimsical violin shredder” (Stereogum) will embark on her North American Snow Waltz tour in November. Beginning in Grand Prairie, TX on November 17th and culminating in a special show on December 23rd in Los Angeles, the 25+ run of dates sees Stirling performing in San Antonio, Orlando, Newark, Milwaukee and more. Stirling’s unique interpretation of beautifully nostalgic holiday music will be more dynamic than ever; Consequence says “the violinist has become a fixture of Christmastime concerts with her combination of cutting-edge performances that include dance, trapeze, lyra, and aerial work along with her signature genre-bending, amped-up orchestrations.” See below for Stirling’s full tour routing.

Sunsleeper – While You Can | Album Review

Second album written about topics from substance abuse and feeling unfulfilled, to not being able to appreciate life. I would describe Sunsleeper as a slightly heavier Switchfoot and I mean that as a compliment. They have a west coast vibe with a bit of grunge. Some of the singles floored me when I heard them and I wanted to relisten as soon as I found them. The album is one long flow and the guitar tones throughout are great. It sets such a mood and it’s hard to leave once you’re in. This is a refreshing pace for indie rock with a lot to offer. You’ll be in the clouds with a lot of this. 8/10

I Prevail Shows True Power in Maryland

I Prevail played an oversold-out show at The Fillmore Silver Spring this past Saturday, in support of their new album released in August 2022, True Power. Accompanying bands on the bill included Yours Truly, Fit For a King, and Pierce the Veil.

The crowd became highly amped up after the stellar performance of Australian alternative band Yours Truly. Front woman Mikaila Delgado’s vocals reminded me so much of Paramore’s Hayley Williams that I couldn’t help getting chills while watching them on stage. What I appreciated the most was how they weren’t a group trying too hard to be “the next big band.” Yours Truly just did their thing and rocked the hell out of that stage with no bells or whistles needed. Their energy was more than enough.

Fit For a King was an entirely different story. I’ve only heard of them by name but never got the pleasure of seeing them until that night. And I have no clue what took me so long. The Texan metalcore band wasted no time jumping into their set, and just watching them was completely mesmerizing. During their set, bassist Ryan “Tuck” O’Leary took a break from jumping around on stage. He cut through the crowd and hopped onto the bar, sipping on a drink while playing his bass. He then proceeded to crowd surf back to the stage. Fit For a King was absolutely wild.

When Pierce the Veil started their set, the venue was nearly at full capacity, 20 people shy of 2,000. Apparently, it was all part of a feud the PTV fans have against I Prevail, believing PTV should be the headliner. So as part of their scheme, the die-hard PTV fans oversold-out shows just to watch the band then leave once their set was over. While it was a massive deal that PTV would break up then return again for this tour, it was still unnecessary drama as there were no clear issues between the band and the headliner. I mean, even I Prevail’s Eric Vanlerbleghe joined the band during one of their songs. Anyway, it was disappointing to see the crowd thin out a bit after PTV ended their set. Again, all unnecessary drama.

So, I Prevail. They started their set a tad bit late, but it was worth the wait. They played a majority of the songs from their new heavy-hitter album, TRUE POWER, two songs from their sophomore album, Lifelines (“Scars” and “Come and Get It”). The rest of the set had five from their previous record, TRAUMA, including a deeply personal favorite of mine, “Bow Down.” Words cannot begin to further describe how incredible they were without sounding like a fangirl instead of a music photojournalist. All I can say is eleven out of ten, would see them again.

The True Power Tour has a handful of dates coming up, including a second leg with Pierce the Veil, Fit For a King, and Stand Atlantic. Run, don’t walk to get a ticket. You don’t want to miss out on this tour.

With the band releasing more content in advance of an album release than ever before, ALTER BRIDGE is back with the fourth song from their upcoming album, Pawns & Kings“This Is War” is the bombastic album opener that sets up the musical journey that listeners can expect from a new ALTER BRIDGE album. With Myles Kennedy on vocals/guitars, Mark Tremonti on guitars/vocals, Brian Marshall on bass and Scott Phillips on drums, the band is at their songwriting finest on the aggressive track that showcases the musicianship that has earned them a global army of fans.

The haunting vocal intro sounds like an internal battle is waging as Myles belts out the lyrics: “Fight for your life, can’t you see what’s coming. Fight for your mind, this is war.” The lyric video was created by ALTER BRIDGE visual collaborator Wayne Joyner.

Pawns & Kings – the band’s seventh studio album – is scheduled for worldwide release on October 14 via Napalm Records. From the opening riffs of “This Is War” to the title track album closer “Pawns & Kings,”ALTER BRIDGE returns with an album of intense tracks that were born after the cycle for their last album was cut short by the global pandemic. Songs like “Dead Among The Living,” “Holiday”  and “Last Man Standing” showcase the signature songwriting the band is known for. The album offers numerous epic adventures, with three songs clocking in over six minutes each. The opus “Fable Of The Silent Son” clocks in at 8:29 and is the longest recorded song in the band’s catalog – a distinction held by “Blackbird” until now. Mark Tremonti steps out of his backing vocal role to take the lead on “Stay,” an introspective ballad that is sure to become a fan favorite live. The band released a lyric video for the title track Pawns & Kings” and for the now fan-favorite “Sin After Sin”.

Known for its signature dual-guitar attack backed by a driving rhythm section, the album’s fast-rising chart-climber “Silver Tongue” is one of the harder songs in the band’s recent catalog. Its animated music video was created and directed by Ollie Jones of Better Feeling Films (Myles Kennedy, Prodigy, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets) and can be seen here.

Pawns & Kings found ALTER BRIDGE reuniting with longtime collaborator and producer Michael “Elvis” Baskette to create a collection of memorable new additions to the band’s impressive catalog.

Slipknot – The End, So Far | Album Review

The next evolution of the knot that comes with a bit of variety, reflection, and anger. Corey sounds equal parts ferocious and calculated. At any given moment he flips the switch and has mastered several forms of delivery. Jay Weinberg is fantastic. This album might be his best drumming work to date.

The deep cuts connect everything and it’s after the singles where the real anger comes in clear. Songs like “H377” and “Hivemind” are vicious. Some tracks that are slower and more ballad-esque add balance but they feel like they belong.

Slipknot made it clear this is not the end, that’s just an album title. I’m glad because they proved they aren’t ready for the finale. 9/10.

Slipknot is an American heavy metal band formed in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1995 by percussionist Shawn Crahan, drummer Joey Jordison and bassist Paul Gray. After several lineup changes in its early years, the band settled on nine members for more than a decade: Crahan, Jordison, Gray, Craig Jones, Mick Thomson, Corey Taylor, Sid Wilson, Chris Fehn, and Jim Root

The End, So Far is the upcoming seventh studio album by American heavy metal band Slipknot. It is scheduled for release on September 30, 2022 through Roadrunner Records. The album is the band’s first to feature percussionist Michael Pfaff, who joined the band in 2019, and will be the band’s final album to be released through Roadrunner, whom the band signed with in 1998.

Dropkick Murphys New Album This Machine Still Kills Fascists is out Today

Dropkick Murphys

Dropkick Murphys‘ new album This Machine Still Kills Fascists is out today (digitally and on CD) via the band’s Dummy Luck Music / [PIAS], with a special edition vinyl out November 11. TMSKF is unlike anything Dropkick Murphys have done to date: A full album of songs that bring Woody Guthrie’s words to life. Not a tribute album or a collection of covers, This Machine Still Kills Fascists is a collaboration between Dropkick Murphys and Woody Guthrie – artists separated by time and space, but connected by a common philosophy – to create something entirely new.

Order the album here: https://dropkick-murphys.ffm.to/7reo1k8

The newest single and video from the album, “The Last One” – featuring Evan Felker of Turnpike Troubadours – is also out today. The stark video was shot at The Church Studio in Tulsa (where the album was recorded) and Woody Guthrie and Evan Felker‘s shared hometown of Okemah, OK. A working class lament, “The Last One” sees Felker and DKM‘s Ken Casey trading verses about the disconnect between the foot of oppression forever pressing on the throats of the working class and the hollow, sanctimonious ideals used to justify that subjugation – while promising “we might lose many a fight, but we’ll damn sure win the last one.” Watch the video here:

In a September 29 review of This Machine Still Kills FascistsNo Depression‘s Jim Shahen sums up Dropkick Murphys‘ connection not only to Guthrie‘s lyrics but to his working class ethos: “No current act has done more to preserve and advance the legacy of Woody Guthrie…Nearly 60 years since his death, the struggles of working men and women and political oppression continue unabated. Those in need remain unheard by people in power. But much like Woody Guthrie, Dropkick Murphys are still out there fighting the good fight.”

To that end, on Tuesday, the Ohio AFL-CIO presented a lifetime achievement award to the band, extending “special recognition to the Dropkick Murphys for their support of organized labor and dedication to telling the story of the working class through their music for over 25 years.”

“The delegates of the Ohio AFL-CIO are proud to recognize the Dropkick Murphys for a career of empowering working people through their music,” said Ohio AFL-CIO President Tim Burga. “The Dropkick Murphys’ support of organized labor and dedication to telling the story of the working class is unparalleled and their impact is significant.”

Coinciding with the album’s release, part 2 of Dropkick Murphys live at Paste Studio on the Road: Boston is streaming starting today at 2:00 PM ET at https://youtu.be/kYfQEeA8K8g. The acoustic set includes new single “The Last One” along with TMSKF tracks “All You Fonies” and “Where Trouble Is At.”

Dropkick Murphys founder Ken Casey also sat down this week with NPR’s Here & Now to discuss This Machine Still Kills Fascists and the importance and enduring timeliness of Guthrie‘s lyrics. That interview can be heard here:

This Machine Still Kills Fascists continues Dropkick Murphys’ journey with Woody Guthrie that began nearly two decades ago with “Gonna Be A Blackout Tonight” and “I’m Shipping Up To Boston.” For those two songs, Dropkick Murphys pulled Guthrie’s lyrics into their musical world, giving them the DKM treatment through and through. For this album – created from a larger body of mostly unpublished works, curated for the band by Woody’s daughter Nora Guthrie – they knew they needed to enter Woody’s musical world, an altogether new challenge for a band whose raw power had relied on searing electric guitars up until this point.

Dropkick Murphys and their longtime producer Ted Hutt aptly recorded This Machine Still Kills Fascistsat The Church Studio in Tulsa (just a few minutes from Woody Guthrie’s birthplace, and the modern-day Woody Guthrie Center). The historic studio was founded by Leon Russell and was the original location of legendary Shelter Records. During the album sessions, Dropkick Murphys made a point to visit Woody’s hometown of Okemah and walk the same streets Woody walked. Retreating to Woody’s home state of Oklahoma to record the album had a powerful effect on the band and the creative process behind these songs. Ultimately, Dropkick Murphys had so much material based on Woody’s poignant lyrics that they recorded two albums, with Vol. 2 scheduled for release in 2023.

Next month, Dropkick Murphys will launch their first-ever reserved seating theater tour – This Machine…Theater Tour – October 20 in support of this very special and powerful acoustic album. Jaime Wyatt will be the main support on this U.S. tour – as well as joining DKM on stage for the duet “Never Git Drunk No More” – and Jesse Ahern will open the shows. Dropkick Murphys’ fall tour dates also include a headlining slot at Punk In The Park in Orange County, CA in November. In addition, a fourth date has been added to Dropkick Murphys‘ previously announced 2023 St. Patrick’s Day Week hometown shows in Boston, after the initial dates sold out. The new date, March 16 at MGM Music Hall at Fenway, features very special guests Turnpike Troubadours and Nikki Lane (who also guests on the album track “Never Git Drunk No More”).

DWP also released figures for the company’s total investment in the community through producing the two back-to-back events, including $4.55 million spent on local restaurants, food and beverage supplies, $2.75 million on local vendors and $2.65 million in wages to local bartenders, stagehands and security.

Louder Than Life 2022 offered memorable music performances that included an incendiary headlining set from Nine Inch Nails to kick off the festivities on Thursday night. The performance was the same date the industrial metal icons celebrated the 30th anniversary of their landmark EP Broken, and they delivered several tracks from that record such as “Wish,” “Gave Up” and their cover of Pigface’s “Suck,” among other highlights in a career-spanning set list.

On Friday, headliners Slipknot unleashed a stacked performance for fans who had come dressed in masks for the occasion. The band delivered “The Dying Song (Time To Sing)” from their anticipated new album The End, So Far, which comes out September 30. Other highlights included fan favorites “Wait And Bleed” and “Duality.” Earlier in the day, Vended – featuring Simon Crahan (son of Slipknot’s Clown) and Griffin Taylor (Corey Taylor’s son) – also gave their all, getting the crowd riled up in anticipation.
