Seether – The Surface Seems So Far | Album Review

I am happy to say that Seether fans can enjoy what is a solid new entry in the band’s catalog. Their last two albums have seen the band attempt to expand on their usual “post-grunge” formula, and The Surface Seems So Far continues that trend while still retaining enough similarities to their early work that things feel like a natural evolution.

This album has Seether really showing off their musical capabilities, continuing to find what is a great balance between post-grunge and alt metal. Judas Mind, and Dead On the Vile are probably my favorite songs off the album as they highlight the band’s dynamic range and deliver an exciting first listen. On the other side of the spectrum, songs like Beneath The Veil and Paint the World are much more reminiscent of the more straightforward post-grunge that was the band’s earlier work, but the vocals and instrumentals are delivered so strongly that they still stand out on their own. Overall, there is something here for both newcomers and lifetime fans of Seether to enjoy.

Seether “Judas Mind”

While there is much to enjoy, not every track is a winner. Songs like Illusion, Same Mistakes, and Try To Heal follow too closely to that “post-grunge” blueprint, making them feel somewhat unremarkable compared to the stronger tracks. They’re by no means bad, but all I can think about listening to them is, “yeah, that was a Seether song” and that was about the end of it. Unfortunately, those underwhelming tracks prevent me from fully embracing the album as a whole, as I’m more likely that I’ll return to it just for specific songs rather than to listen to it in full.

Also this was a slight issue I had, but it felt like there were times the instrumentals overpowered the vocals, especially at times when Shaun Morgan’s voice was filtered with audio effects. It’s a shame because Shaun’s vocals are on point throughout the entire album and hearing everything clearly together leaves you mesmerized. While it isn’t egregious—there are certainly worse cases of bad mixing—it’s frustrating when I have to replay sections to decipher the lyrics, especially when you take into account that I had this issue in a quiet environment and was focused solely on listening.

Overall, there’s enough here to satisfy both longtime fans and casual listeners. However, I don’t believe it will be regarded as anything more than just a slightly above average addition to Seether’s legacy.

“During a recent concert in Boston, Jane’s Addiction faced a shocking onstage altercation that led to the cancellation of their entire reunion tour. The incident occurred on September 13, 2024, when lead singer Perry Farrell confronted guitarist Dave Navarro mid-performance, resulting in a physical fight that culminated with Farrell throwing a punch. This confrontation was captured on video and quickly circulated on social media, leaving fans in disbelief and questioning the band’s future. Following the altercation, the band announced the difficult decision to cancel the remainder of their tour due to ongoing concerns about Farrell’s mental health and the safety of performances. In their statement, they expressed deep regret for not being able to fulfill their commitments to fans, emphasizing the need for a break as a collective to prioritize well-being.” (Perplexity)

“Thirty Seconds to Mars, the American rock band formed in 1998 by brothers Jared and Shannon Leto, has experienced a significant shift in their musical direction and fan reception over the years. Once known for their alternative rock sound and energetic live performances, the band has gradually moved towards a more pop-oriented style, particularly evident in their recent albums. This transition has led to a decline in interest among long-time fans, with many expressing disappointments in the band’s new musical direction and live show quality. Adding to the controversy surrounding the group is the island retreat owned by frontman Jared Leto, which has been the subject of much speculation and criticism. Some view it as a fan exploitation venture, while others see it as an extension of Leto’s eccentric persona. Despite these challenges, Thirty Seconds to Mars continues to release new music and tour, though their once-passionate fanbase appears to be dwindling as they struggle to maintain relevance in the ever-changing music industry.” (Perplexity)

Dead Posey Announce Debut Album “Are You In A Cult?”; New Song “Scar”

Dead Posey Announce Debut Album
Are You In A Cult?
for October 18th, 2024

Dead Posey — lead singer, Danyell Souza and guitarist/multi-instrumentalist, Tony Nova — proudly announce their new album Are You In A Cult?, alongside a new single release. The album drops on October 18.

As the title suggests, the album explores the phenomenon of mini-cults in the modern day, inspired by political figures, social media influencers, authors, self-help gurus, and celebrities. The band’s punk-rock spirit shines in their lyrical themes while sprinkling a hefty dose of “DGAF” attitude and an alluring macabre essence inspired by cults, monsters, nightmares, and devils. The album incorporates the hallmarks of goth spirit and punk rebellion with ’80s synth pop and ’90s alt-rock.

When asked about the album announcement, Dead Posey say, “We’ve been chomping at the bit to get this debut album out and are excited it’s finally happening. It’s been a long time coming with the early versions of some songs dating back a few years. The title ‘Are You In A Cult?’ comes from us seeing what look like mini-cults forming everywhere. Regular people getting tempted and manipulated to follow one charismatic leader, idea or worldview, often to their own harm. We’re all guilty of it at some point, but we hope asking the question can give people some power back.”

To add, when asked about the new single “Scar,” Dead Posey notes, “This is the most vulnerable song we’ve written to date, and the last one we recorded for the album. It comes from the demons lurking in the corners of my mind and the monsters I feel creeping in the night – that feeling you get when you’re beat down by the world and don’t know how you’ll make it through. It’s a cathartic lullaby for all those who are lost going through their own dark nights of the soul. When we admit the pain is real – that’s when healing takes place and we can learn to live with the scars.”

Chokecherry Announce Debut EP “Messy Star”; Share Title Track

San Francisco Shoegaze X Grunge Pop Act Chokecherry
Announce Debut EP Messy Star for October 25, 2024

San Francisco shoe gaze x grunge pop trio chokecherry — comprised of vocalist/guitarist Izzie Clark and bassist/vocalist E. Scarlett Levinson, along with drummer Abri Crocitto — are thrilled to announce the October 25 release of Messy Star, their debut EP for Fearless Records. Pre-save it here

chokecherry have been steadily building a buzz since meeting on the dating app Hinge. The San Francisco Gate praised chokecherry’s “blend of white-hot shoegaze,” calling it “the modern sound of the California sun vaporizing the San Francisco fog.” Clark and Levinson may not have worked out on the romantic front, but the pair are clearly musical soulmates and it’s beautiful thing to witness and hear.

Today, the band shares the visualizer for the title track. Watch it here.

chokecherry “Messy Star”

The track marks the final pre-release single from the EP. It’s a powerful, cathartic track with an experimental, alt twist and takes influence from some unexpected sources. The accompanying video follows the story of a star that is burning out. It’s the band’s commentary on the destructive effect that celebrity culture can wreak on artists.

“From the moment we started writing this song, it felt like a journey,” the band says. “It began as a heavier shoegaze track, but when we took it into the studio with producer Zach Tuch, he pushed us to experiment with a trip-hop style beat in the verses. This creative choice took the song to a whole new level and gave it such a unique feeling. The format of ‘Messy Star’ and its departure from our usual method of only using live instruments broadened the feeling of the track and pushed it to a more experimental place. This track is our first incorporation of samples, playing on our shared love for artists like Massive Attack and Radiohead.”

Vocally, the song takes inspiration the likes of Mannequin Pussy and Lana Del Rey, with its mix of sultry coos and melodic yelling.

The band continues, “The track still felt like a journey, but instead of simply a long drive now, it felt like crawling out from the underworld into heaven itself. The chorus breaks into an entirely new world than the one the verses occupy. It turns from strange trip hop grunge to a more classic heavy shoegaze track with angelic vocals.”

Regarding the video, chokecherry explain, “It touches on themes of feeling seen and scrutinized, wanting things other people have (or even wanting to be someone else), and the desire to break away from stardom and the feeling of being watched and perceived. The ‘supernova’ lyric is a reference to musicians and stars ‘burning out’ like we have seen in contemporary celebrity culture.”

They say it’s better to burn out than fade away, but chokecherry thinks that there’s something better than BOTH burning out and fading away. We just have to find out what, exactly, “that” is!

MESSY STAR EP TRACK LISTING:

“Messy Star”
“I Know You”

Chokecherry will capture the hearts of rock fans everywhere with songs that boast thick, ’70s-inspired bass lines laden with strategically placed howls and hums. Their passionate, hypnotic delivery overflows and fills into every word, allowing vulnerability that listeners can truly attach to. If their Spotify streams —2.8 million global streams and counting — are any indication of how many music fans will dig what chokecherry are putting down, then it’s time for 2024 to buckle the F up.

WHITECHAPEL Unleashes New Single “A Visceral Retch”

WHITECHAPEL Unleashes “A Visceral Retch” Video/Single;
North American Tour With Lorna Shore To Commence Next Week

Whitechapel “A Visceral Retch”

WHITECHAPEL is pleased to unleash their brand-new standalone single, “A Visceral Retch.” Relentlessly slamming, ominous, and punishing, the track delivers a dark, twisted theme about gluttonous overlords who test the lengths to which humans will go to survive and join their cult. At once brutal and disturbing, it’s a prime song for any extreme metal playlist.

Comments WHITECHAPEL vocalist Phil Bozeman, “‘A Visceral Retch’ is a song that fans of The Somatic Defilement will latch onto immediately. It was one of the first songs we had in the chamber to work with. This song came to light thanks mostly to [guitarist] Zach Householder. He showed us and we all immediately said, ‘yup, that’s it.’ Zach is notorious for very dark and horror-like vibes so this album is right in his wheelhouse. The song is disturbing. Imagine being put in a situation of survival by gluttonous, mammoth demons that give you a choice. Eat the demons’ waste, eat each other, or starve to death. The twist, you’re against the people you love the most. It’s a way to find the ones that are truly evil people to build and strengthen their cult. It also represents how horrible people can really be, when push comes to shove.”

Watch WHITECHAPEL’s “A Visceral Retch” video, directed by My Good Eye Visuals, at THIS LOCATION.

Stream/purchase the track at: metalblade.com/whitechapel.

WHITECHAPEL will serve as direct support to Lorna Shore on their upcoming, mostly sold out, North American headlining tour. Additional support on the tour will be provided by Kublai Khan TX and Sanguisugabogg.

In November, the band will join Thy Art Is Murder for eight dates in Latin America before closing out the year in late December with the Tennessee Takeover 2024, a trio of headlining shows through Chattanooga, Nashville, and Knoxville. Support will be provided by Sanguisugabogg, Gates To Hell, and Peeling Flesh.

“Linkin Park’s recent decision to appoint Emily Armstrong as their new co-vocalist has ignited both excitement and controversy within the music community. Following a seven-year hiatus after the tragic passing of their original lead singer, Chester Bennington, the band announced their comeback with a new album titled From Zero and a world tour. While many fans have praised Armstrong’s powerful vocal abilities and her dynamic stage presence, her past associations have raised eyebrows. Specifically, allegations regarding her support for convicted rapist Danny Masterson and ties to the Church of Scientology have sparked backlash. In response, Armstrong clarified her stance against any form of abuse, emphasizing her disapproval of violence against women. This controversy has created a complex narrative around Linkin Park’s return, with some fans expressing concern over the new direction while others are eager to embrace the band’s evolution and honor Bennington’s legacy through Armstrong’s contributions.” (Perplexity)
