Meet Me @ The Altar – Past // Present // Future | Album Review

From meeting on YouTube to being the backdrop of a Taco Bell commercial, Meet Me @ The Altar’s skyrocketing popularity isn’t without its detractors. The terminally-online crowd gets called out in the band’s opening track “Say It (To My Face)” on their long-awaited debut LP, Past // Present // Future. Playing in Hot Topics nationwide and nabbing a deal with the iconic Fueled by Ramen in 2020, the in-your-face pop-punk queens have made waves with multiple EPs, but Past // Present // Future aims to make the group a household name.

Moving tickets rapidly for their debut album’s tour, fans coming in droves at this early point proves big things for MM@TA.

Originally teased on Twitter months ago, next up on Past // Present // Future is “Try”, packing in the nostalgia of Sonic Adventure 2’s “City Escape” with MM@TA’s masterful hold of upbeat, eclectic pop-punk. It’s even more clear in single “Kool”’s infectious hook that the choruses on this record are fine-tuned to stick in the listener’s head for eons. Production is no slouch, either – expect harmonies to shine and lots of layering within Past // Present // Future, guaranteeing you’re glued to the song from start to finish.

As Meet Me @ The Altar are a three-piece, vocalist Edith Victoria, guitarist/bassist Téa Campbell, and drummer Ada Juarez all see plenty of spotlight; despite the genre being more vocal-focused, it’s worth listening for a clever guitar riff from Téa or a drum fill from Ada. While MM@TA typically utilized more double-bass and had a punchier sound in previous EPs leaning towards an easycore sound, the group has eased into very radio-friendly (but still catchy as can be) songwriting within Past // Present // Future. Where one could headbang to EP Model Citizen, expect to sing along and dance to slower songs on this LP, like “A Few Tomorrows”.

Leading off with “Say It (To My Face)”, you may have heard this in the Taco Bell TV spot played nationwide!

Inspiration is drawn from several genre staples on Past // Present // Future, as Meet Me @ The Altar channel everything from Avril Lavigne to All American Rejects on the climactic “Need Me” and the blistering “It’s Over For Me”. Variety is bursting between each track, making it hard to classify anything on here as “filler”. Instead of opting for the easy earworm copy-and-paste formula, the experimentation throughout Past // Present // Future is what makes it a smooth 30-minute listen – the perfect length for the target demographic and a strong helping of tunes for those ready for a deep dive.

It was bold to place the leading single as the first track, but Meet Me @ The Altar ensured the rest of Past // Present // Future is worth delving through. While the non-singles don’t hit quite as hard as “Say It (To My Face)” and “Kool”, it’s still a huge testament for the young band’s future to start this strong with one of the largest labels in the scene. Any form of pop-punk fan is going to find something to like here (I’m impartial to “Try” flashing me back to my childhood just discovering pop-punk at an impressionable age). Whether you saw the band on The Late Show with Steven Colbert, grew up with Green Day, or have a fleeting interest in alt music, give Meet Me @ The Altar’s debut Past // Present // Future a spin at this early juncture before they take over.

Rating: 8/10

ENTER SHIKARI Share New Single “Bloodshot” & Announce Special Show

Enter shikari

Enter Shikari are today sharing Bloodshot, the third single to be taken from their highly-anticipated forthcoming album A Kiss For The Whole World, which will be released on 21st April via SO Recordings / Ambush Reality. Listen to Bloodshot on streaming services here.

“Bloodshot” follows recent singles “(pls) set me on fire”and “It Hurts”, both of which were instantly embraced with open arms by fans old and new, and received their first live outings during the band’s sensational run of sold-out February residency shows in the UK. For Enter Shikari, rejuvenation, resilience and resurrection have been on the agenda as they introduce new music to the world. However, in the arrival of “Bloodshot” the band have more questions to pose themselves, and us.

Lead vocalist and producer Rou Reynolds explains:

“Every day, I seem to be asking myself “Is this article biased?”, “is this claim true?”, “Should I be more furious about this issue? Or less furious?”, “Am I being manipulated? Provoked? Radicalised by my own ‘tribe’?.

“Bloodshot” is about how hard it is to find truth, and how easy it is to stop thinking for yourself and simply repeat your ‘team’s’ mantras.

Everyone’s so fucking angry with everyone else and it’s exhausting. It seems like social media’s main purpose these days is to hypnotise us to hate.”

Pre-order A Kiss For The Whole World here. Limited formats of the new album come packaged with the Live From Alexandra Palace 3 album & DVD, recorded live in December 2021 at the band’s sold out 10,000 capacity London show.

Periphery – Periphery V: Djent Is A Not A Genre | Album Review

This is another massive, proggy, metalcore, djenty, fill-in-your-own-subgenre-here album that checks many boxes. The guitarwork from Misha and Mark is creative, wild, and fantastic. Spencer’s vocals hold up strong and have some serious high points. There are many styles from heavy metal to synth-pop displayed which also shows how much the group is capable of meshing together. Songs like “Atropos” and “Wildfire” are relentless, but that’s balanced by slower connecting segments like in “Dying Star” which are electronic and smooth. This Periphery album is massive and sometimes overwhelming, but after a few listens you realize just how much was put into an album arguing the validity of djent. This star isn’t dying at all. 8/10.

Nita Strauss, the top-rated guitarist who had been with Alice Cooper for several years until she departed to do a Fall 2022 tour with Demi Lovato, will be returning to Alice’s band for his 2023 tour, Cooper’s management disclosed today.

Said Alice, “She’s Back!  Nita asked for a leave of absence to work with someone else, something I always encourage my band members to do. I like them to challenge themselves and try new things. I’m thankful to my old friend Kane Roberts for stepping up and filling in for her, but she’ll be back with us for the new tour that starts up in late April. Globally acclaimed Mongolian rock outfit THE HU will bring their enveloping live show to audiences across Europe this summer as they embark on a headlining run in support of their 2022 sophomore album RUMBLE OF THUNDER via Better Noise Music. The tour kicks off June 6 with their set at Nova Rock Festival in Nickelsdorf, AT on and includes venue and festival stops across the UK and Europe until they reach their last stop on July 22 at Malakofff Festival in Norway. Tickets are available today, March 3, at https://www.thehuofficial.com/tour-1. See below for a complete list of tour dates.

THE HU recently sparked the attention of music audiences worldwide with their latest single “This Is Mongol (Warrior Souls) Feat. William DuVall of Alice In Chains,” an updated version of their groundbreaking 2022 track “This Is Mongol” which was featured on the soundtrack for the horror-thriller The Retaliators (Better Noise Films) in which members of THE HU also appeared. The evocative new version is out now along with its fierce music video and can be seen HERE.

In other news, THE HU recently shared the first two episodes of their mini-docuseries “Citizens of The World,” which details how the band formed their self-branded genre of “hunnu rock”—a unique blend of Western modern rock/metal and Mongolian throat singing using traditional Mongolian instruments—and the impact their music has had globally including being named UNESCO’s “Artist For Peace” recipients for 2022. Watch Episode 1 HERE and Episode 2 HERE.

THE HU have accumulated over 329 million combined streams and 290 million video views, two Top 5 Mainstream Rock charting singles, multiple sold-out headlining global tours, festival appearances including Coachella, Lollapalooza and Download Festival and rave reviews from Billboard, NPR, GQ, The Guardian, Revolver and even Sir Elton John himself.
