Kamelot – The Awakening | Album Review

Symphonic Power Metal with plenty of theatrical presence and bombast and high moments. Meaning it’s symphonic and power metal done right. Not only is the guitar and keywork great but Tommy’s voice is gold throughout the album. Tracks like “Eventide” and “Opus Of The Night” get stuck in your head after one listen. This is a dark story with tons of heavy AND quiet moments and sometimes you are waiting a bit for the next big moment, but it always comes and Kamelot doesn’t leave you hanging long. The Awakening is an album for metal fans that want a full album experience where you take in the little elements and sing along with the big choruses. Big guest features and as dark, brooding, and gothic as it is fun. 8/10.

Pierce The Veil Announce North American Tour

Pierce the Veil

Platinum-selling powerhouse Pierce The Veil — guitarist/vocalist Vic Fuentes, guitarist Tony Perry, and bassist Jaime Preciado — have announced their North American tour plans.

The band will return to the road this spring and summer on a co-headline run with The Used. The “Creative Control Tour” kicks off on May 23 in Austin and runs through July 2 in Phoenix. All dates are below. Get tickets here.

“Every night of this tour is going to be a celebration. Our new album The Jaws of Life is finally out and we get to share this monumental moment with our beautiful fans. We are so honored to hit the road with The Used, a band that has inspired us since the very beginning. It’s going to be unlike any other tour we’ve done and we can’t wait to see you there. Thank you for all of your support. Love, PTV.”

Pierce The Veil dropped their new album The Jaws of Life  their first in seven years — in February via longtime label Fearless Records. Get it here.

It’s now available as an expanded edition with a bonus track — a raucous live rendition of The Jaws of Life‘s first single “Pass the Nirvana” that was captured during the band’s explosive set at the inaugural When We Were Young Festival last October.

The band is also offering an exclusive 7″ as part of their tour’s VIP package. It comes in a blood orange colorway and features new cover art and features the live version of “Pass the Nirvana” on one side and the studio version on the other.

PTV’s evolution from album to album is nothing less than stunning. The early buzz generated by A Flair for the Dramatic (2007) made its follow-up one of the most anticipated albums of 2010. Selfish Machines shot to No. 1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. The Chicago Tribune saluted Collide with the Sky for its “post-hardcore punk with more than a few nods to Queen.” They became a true arena act on Misadventures, selling out huge venues without losing the intimate connection with their fans.

The Jaws of Life was produced by Paul Meany (Twenty One Pilots, Yungblood, Walk the Moon), and mixed by Adam Hawkins (Machine Gun Kelly, Turnstile, Twenty One Pilots). Deadly serious subject matter abounds, but Pierce The Veil enduringly navigates it all with grace. The lyrics continue the Fuentes tradition of painstaking honesty and clever twists of phrase. Pierce The Veil perform at the biggest festivals and is counted among the biggest and brightest of a younger generation of bands. But it all starts with the songs. The Jaws of Life is filled with the kind to keep the PTV fire burning forever.

The Mars Volta ‘Que Dios Te Maldiga Mi Corazon’ Out April 21

Mars Volta

On April 21, 2023The Mars Volta will release ‘Que Dios Te Maldiga Mi Corazon’ via Clouds Hill.

Much more than a simple “un- plugged” version of ‘The Mars Volta’ – the bands self titled seventh album and return as a band – this acoustic rendition furthers the mission of the source music, which drew into sharper focus the traditional Latin influences that have always inspired Omar Rodríguez-López and Cedric Bixler-Zavala. This is, says Rodríguez- López, The Mars Volta’s version of a “folk record”, tracing the melodies and rhythms of the parent album back to their traditional Caribbean roots and chal- lenging listeners to hear the group in an entirely new light.

Today, fans can stream “Blank Condolences (Acoustic)” via this link: https://themarsvolta.lnk.to/BlankCondolences

The upcoming new album isn’t simply more content, but a bold, radical, political album, and one that recontextualizes the music of the group’s powerful last album within the lineage of the Latin and Caribbean sounds that Rodríguez- López has been mining his entire career, only many ears couldn’t hear past the distorted guitars to know what was going on. The songs are re-orchestrated and set to the traditional Caribbean rhythms that Rodríguez-López grew up on. Here, “Black Condolences” becomes an object lesson in this music, segueing be- tween three different traditional rhythms across its three-and-a-half minutes.

Pre-order for ‘Que Dios Te Maldiga Mi Corazon’ is now available at this link: https://gtly.to/ghq-H4_iz

‘Que Dios Te Maldiga Mi Corazon’ track listing

  1. Blacklight Shine (Acoustic)
  2. Graveyard Love (Acoustic)
  3. Shore Story (Acoustic)
  4. Vigil (Acoustic)
  5. Que Dios Te Maldiga Mi Corazon (Acoustic)
  6. Cerulea (Acoustic)
  7. Flash Burns From Flashbacks (Acoustic)
  8. Palm Full Of Crux (Acoustic)
  9. No Case Gain (Acoustic)
  10. Tourmaline (Acoustic)
  11. Equus 3 (Acoustic)
  12. Collapsible Shoulders (Acoustic)
  13. The Requisition (Acoustic)

For Rodríguez-López, ‘Que Dios Te Maldiga Mi Corazon’ is a long-held dream, finally coming true. “I realized I could finally make a record like this now, I just had to make it happen,” he says. “That was the experiment. And it was super-fun. I feel like The Mars Volta is finally beginning – that’s why the last album was self- titled, because we’ve finally stripped everything away and arrived at what the whole concept was at the beginning. And this acoustic version comes from a profound place, with its own meaning and philosophy, and its own reason for be- ing.”

Que Dios Te Maldiga Mi Corazon’ is out April 21, 2023 via Clouds Hill Pre-order it here: https://gtly.to/ghq-H4_iz

Their previous release – the critically acclaimed – ‘The Mars Volta’ is out now and available to stream wherever you consume music. It was the first new music in almost a decade from the band and signified their return. Listen here: https://themarsvolta.lnk.to/TheMarsVoltaPR

Formed by guitarist/composer Omar Rodríguez-López and singer/lyricist Cedric Bixler-Zavala, The Mars Volta rose from the ashes of El Paso punk-rock firebrands At The Drive-In in 2001. On a mission to “honor our roots and honor our dead”, The Mars Volta made music that fused the Latin sounds Rodríguez-López was raised on with the punk and underground noise he and Bixler-Zavala had immersed themselves in for years, and the futuristic visions they were tapping into. The albums that followed were one-of-a-kind masterpieces, their songs of breath-taking complexity also possessing powerful emotional immediacy. After the group fell silent, a legion of devotees (including Kanye West) kept up an insistent drum-beat for their return.

Suicide Silence – Remember…You Must Die | Album Review

40 minutes of deathcore from a band known for solidifying the subgenre. It aligns more with Become The Hunter as a true-to-form deathcore album. Suicide Silence fans should be happy about that. Guitar riffs and rhythm section are strong enough, there is decent work in songs like “You Must Die” and “Kill Forever”. There is a solid effort. The two big problems are 1.) the album does drag by the end with little variation after a while, and 2.) Hermida’s vocals are starting to sound strained. You hear his higher register sound fine but when the guttural growls come out, it sounds rough and forced. It’s not an awful deathcore album at all but it’s also quite “safe” for deathcore. One step forward, one step back. Wish it was a better overall package. 6/10
