There is something to be said about a peaceful sermon that calmly uplifts you. That was not what happened in Bristow, VA when Ghost and Amon Amarth arrived with the Re-Imperatour. Rituals from Papa and the Nameless Ghouls aren’t known for subtlety, and when you invite Vikings there is a guarantee of a boisterous venue.
The Re-Imperatour highlighted many of Ghost’s charting songs from 2022’s Impera, including “Spillways”, “Watcher In The Sky”, “Kaisarion”, and the Grammy-nominated “Call Me Little Sunshine“. One of the biggest highlights however was the three-song encore featuring “Dance Macabre” and “Square Hammer”. What started as a Summer Sermon, turned into a dance party. This is how all rituals should be held.
The charismatic Papa Emeritus IV is known for his presence and presentation. His greatest message however was near the end of the night, where he said that we should not be upset about an ending. We should be happy that things end eventually. This was proceeded by the song “Mummy Dust” where a Nameless Ghoul made a cruel jester and confetti cannons exploded. Philosophy and perversion go hand-in-hand with Ghost.

Ghost Live On The Re-Imperatour
The evening’s opening moments at Jiffy Lube Live were echoed with ocean waves and war chants. Amon Amarth are not strangers to the venue and singer Johan Hegg pointed out that the band and he always felt welcome in Bristow. The DMV area was always Pro-Viking (despite being Commander territory). In appreciation, he made sure everyone got a good seat and participated in the row. Whether it was fans in the pit or fans in their amphitheater seats, the oar was Bristow’s best friend.
Songs from The Great Heathen Army were highlighted through Amon Amarth’s performance. Along with the Viking battle that took place on the runway and the sea serpent that surfaced on stage, Amon Amarth was able to get through the night unscathed. We can all rest a little easier knowing that Amon Amarth is shredding through the seas to protect us.
Amon Amarth Live On The Re-Imperatour
As the Re-Imperatour runs through the United States for the next two weeks, it makes me appreciate the spectacle that Ghost and Amon Amarth have both become. This is a show that on paper may not have seemed to mesh between bands. The audience at Jiffy Lube Live proved that both bands are supported by the same heavy music lovers. Both Swedish bands have audiences that support more than just one group on a bill. In a night filled with pyro and confetti, Ghost and Amon Amarth shined brightest.

Gold-selling, billion-streaming rock band BEARTOOTH — Caleb Shomo, vocals; Zach Huston, guitars; Will Deely, guitars; Oshie Bichar, bass; and Connor Denis, drums — have announced their fifth album The Surface. It will arrive October 13 via Red Bull Records. Pre-order it here.
Like its predecessors, The Surface is an intensely personal and powerful journey for Shomo, who has never shied away from sharing his demons in his music and with his fans. However, the frontman has turned a corner with a more optimistic outlook and demonstrates exceptional growth as both an artist and a human being through the songs that comprise the album.
Today, the band has shared the video for new track “Doubt Me.” Watch it here.
Beartooth “Doubt Me”
The footage in “Doubt Me” captures Beartooth in their most natural state — performing live and unleashed on their instruments with ferocious abandon!
“We all have our own struggles that we deal with quietly,” says Shomo. “Sometimes, it can be hard to explain to the people around you what you’re dealing with. What may be perceived by others as weakness is actually a battle with yourself that you know will be conquered. Being in the thick of serious change is never easy, and being brought down by those who don’t understand can add to the weight. Know that when you’re in those moments, sometimes you need to just put your head down and fight with all you have, regardless of whatever people say you’re capable of at the moment.”
The first single “Might Love Myself” has stormed out the gates and is proving itself to be a hit, as the fastest moving song on the active rock radio charts in the band’s history, landing in the Top 20 within three weeks.
Additionally, all previously released tracks — “Riptide,” “Sunshine!,” and “Might Love Myself” have tallied nearly 50 million total streams thus far.
THE SURFACE TRACK LISTING: “The Surface” “Riptide“ “Doubt Me” “The Better Me” (Feat. HARDY) “Might Love Myself“ “Sunshine!“ “What’s Killing You” “Look The Other Way” “What Are You Waiting For” “My New Reality” “I Was Alive”
ABOUT BEARTOOTH: Caleb Shomo first turned the pain of his struggle with mental health and self-image into music in 2013. Beartooth began as a living document, a diary, a journal of repressed rage and depression. Alone in his basement studio, screaming and singing, playing all the instruments, and self-producing a batch of furious but melodic songs filled with reflection and confession, the Ohio native stared into the abyss, initially with no intention of returning to the heavy music world that burned him as a teen. A decade later, the different pieces of his body of work connect in title, sound, and spirit. As the frontman hits 30, Beartooth’s fifth album, he Surface, completes this era in 2023. Even more importantly, it kicks off a new chapter filled with surprising optimism and just as honest. Depression is a sick, disgusting, aggressive disease below the surface. Shomo stands ready to bask in the light.
Like Nine Inch Nails, Beartooth remains a one-person band in the studio. On the heels of the introductory Sick EP (2013), Disgusting (2014) produced the band’s first Gold single, “In Between.” Aggressive (2016) and Disease (2018) expanded on the desperation and pain, each a step closer to a balance between the blood and tears of classic recordings and the shimmer of modernity.
Rolling Stone heralded Beartooth as one of 10 Artists You Need to Know. The rabid response to Shomo’s music demonstrated how many people related to his struggle for self-acceptance. Below (2021) topped the Rock and Alternative charts and several Best Rock/Metal Albums of the Year lists. As of 2023, the Beartooth catalog boasts more than 1 billion streams across all platforms.
Beartooth began as both bomb and balm, an outright refusal to suffer in silence, weaponizing radio-ready bombast, delivering raw emotion mixed with noise-rock chaos. Other bands play the “devastating riffs and catchy hooks” game, but this music is the difference between life and death, and now, a sort of life after death while still here. The band Forbes sees “inching towards a tipping point of becoming the latest arena headliner” is now one step closer.
The NOMVDIC project is one that hits close to home, not just for me but for anyone who captures the tonalities and words from this unique act. Ingrained with the deepest, darkest depths of the human state, throwing a NOMVDIC track on belts the listener with thought-provoking instrumentals inspired by everything from progressive metalcore to atmospheric black metal. Tack on the bleak, harrowing vocal delivery, and the result is truly one of metal’s best-kept secrets. So with People Just Leave arriving, it’s high-time to visit another thematic journey from this unpredictable group.
Not one for lead-up, People Just Leave introduces the listener to the meticulous chaos in “People”s opening moments with thundering triplets from a commanding snare and fast strums to set an immediate tone. Impassioned yells from vocalist James Lewis beckon, “Release me from your hold, I’m begging” as the stage is set for the themes at play in PJL. The rising action of bleak lyricism and doom-y guitars leads to quite possibly the most massive, well-executed breakdowns I’ve heard in recent memory. It’s not often this tried-and-true passage can raise eyebrows, but the tempo-change, panic notes, and manic mosh call are still giving me goosebumps even after a handful of listens.
Where “People” led with a bang, “Just” opens with a distressing voicemail as the towering guitars make their presence known. It’s soon after that Lewis showcases his vocal range with veracity and succinct lyrics warranting repentance amidst blast beats and more laser-focused instrumental runs. Lewis revealed that his rotation included such acts as Humanity’s Last Breath and Portrayal of Guilt, and the inspiration of these idiosyncratic groups can be felt especially within this midway point of People Just Leave. Another climactic breakdown and it’s evident that the winning formula doesn’t need tampering with for NOMVDIC.
“Leave” brings about chugs and riffs to juxtapose the deliberate, slower pace of the previous two tracks. It brings about the most dire, vulnerable lyrics yet, delivered with a rasp and a sense of desperation. As the song arrive at its most frenetic point, it then ceases on a whim with a delicate, sorrowful bridge into a full-on black metal cavalcade of intensity. The unpredictability is going to throw listeners for a loop in the best way possible. Nomvdic can pull from so many iterations of metal that genre no longer matters – “Leave” transcends a label and instead celebrates how metal can convey emotions in a bevy of facets.
A masterful grasp of metal music, People Just Leave isn’t just a thematic journey, it’s a clear-cut true statement and serves as 14 minutes of emotional release, of envigored vehemence, and a resonance to anyone fed up with others. Backed by Blood Blast Distribution (Brand of Sacrifice, Frontierer), NOMVDIC is slowly but surely receiving well-deserved exposure to a larger audience. It’s certain this Nomvdic EP will stay in my rotation for longer than I can anticipate. A short film on People Just Leave is set for release alongside the EP this Friday. Look to stream the EP in full starting August 25th.

Brendon Small proving once again he is a metal mastermind. This is an 11-track album where nothing feels like filler, it’s all heavy and PERFECTLY in sync on timing and structure. Gene on drumming, amazing rhythm guitars, it’s all structurally sound and keeps up with the Dethklok name. There are comedic points such as opening with the lawnmower noises, but the album NEVER feels like a joke because of how strong the music behind Natan Explosion is. When you get to a song like Bloodbath or the phenomenal closer Mermaider III, you realize Small made sure to send out Metalocalypse on a high note. Dethklok IV is as killer as an Aortic Desectration. So is the new movie Army Of The Doomstar. Check them both out. 8/10.
Dethklok – Dethalbum IV | Album Review
Dethklok “Aortic Desecration”
Dethklok is a fictional melodic death metal band featured in the Adult Swim animated television series Metalocalypse, known for its satirical or parodic lyrical themes.
Brendon Small (born February 15, 1975) is an American actor, stand-up comedian, animator, writer, director, producer, and musician known for co-creating the animated series Home Movies (1999–2004, with Loren Bouchard) and Metalocalypse (2006–2013, with Tommy Blacha). He also writes the music, and is the main performer for the virtual melodic death metal band Dethklok, which began as the subject of Metalocalypse but has taken on a life of its own, with four albums and an occasional live touring band, headed by Small. Small has also released two albums under his own name, in a similar musical style to Dethklok.
From Google Bard: “Dethklok is a fictional melodic death metal band featured in the Adult Swim animated television series Metalocalypse, known for its satirical or parodic lyrical themes. The band is composed of five members: Nathan Explosion (vocals), Skwisgaar Skwigelf (guitar), Toki Wartooth (guitar), Pickles (bass), and William Murderface (drums).
In the Metalocalypse series, Dethklok is depicted as the world’s most popular and successful death metal band. The members of Dethklok reside in a colossal, fortress-like castle elevated high above ground called Mordhaus, which serves as their residence as well as their recording studio. Beyond their extremely wealthy financial status, they also oversee a massive personal organization of devoted workers known as Klokateers, who act as their personal servants, as well as their roadies, security personnel, and private military squadron.”
For Holding Absence, artistry is more than just simply lyric-writing or notes on a guitar. The Cardiff, United Kingdom four-piece has made a name for themselves in evoking emotions through their songs, whether it’s the fragility of “Afterlife” or perhaps the guilt within “Birdcage”. Their tunes resonate so well that they comfortably sit at more than a million monthlies on Spotify and are attached to tours with the likes of Dayseeker, Senses Fail, and other genre greats. A band that’s relatively on the newer side, there’s still a deep discography to sift through ahead of The Noble Art of Self Destruction. Shares the band, “Our first album was about love, (the second) about loss, and this album is about the person that’s left at the end of that”, revealing this record to close out a trilogy. Within that theme, does The Noble Art of Self Destruction stick the landing?
In keeping with the containment of The Noble Art of Self Destruction being a sequential end that ties into the delivery from their first two major releases, there’s a certain standard that Holding Absence are expected of at this point. This album can’t stand to have filler/weak tracks, but Holding Absence doesn’t have many to reference; even the non-singles possess high-quality, catchy hooks and melodies. This is evident in the first impression, “Head Prison Blues”, marking the territory of anthemic choruses from Lucas Woodland that goes beyond tugging at heartstring and instead channels sorrow and desperation. Lead single “A Crooked Melody” cements this with lyricism that are less performative and more deep-rooted truths coming from Woodland’s yells.
The Noble Art of Self Destruction is not a happy album, but it’s one where listeners will relate and revel in nonetheless. That continues with “False Dawn”, as the band denotes it as “A somewhat defeatist song about denouncing expectations, and coming to grips with failure.” The bridge in “Scissors” delivered goosebumps to me as this bleak, poignant run is the best moment on this half of the record. Major key is rare for Holding Absence, but last single “Honey Moon”‘s chorus brings about a hopeful tone for a change, as the night sky makes for lyrical imagery in this gorgeous piece.
The instrumentals in “Death, Nonetheless” showcase that even if Holding Absence is a frontman-centric group, the intrinsic talent behind the entourage deserves the spotlight just as much. The Noble Art of Self Destruction carries on with “Her Wings” as I’m led to believe that this band’s bridges are just as prolific as their choruses, as Woodland hits some huge high notes before this track closes out. “These New Dreams” continues that theory as I found my attention was drawn to the bridge as the rest of this track showed some long-listen fatigue, also felt in “Liminal”. “The Angel in the Marble” truly is the standout track, being six minutes of reflection, acceptance, and “I am a puzzle, I am a painting, I am a work of art in the making” being the best way to close the book on this album.
The Noble Art of Self Destruction‘s highest highs far outweigh its few lows, as longtime fans will be rewarded with this trilogy-closer in some of the best tracks Holding Absence has created to this point. “Head Prison Blues”, “Honey Moon”, and “The Angel in the Marble” are going to get several replays from me for 2023 and beyond. This is just one step closer of Holding Absence being a household name in post-hardcore, as their winning formula meets masterful songwriting yet again. While this record is more front-heavy, the album ender cannot be understated. Look to stream The Noble Art of Self Destruction this Friday, August 25th.
The Ladies Who Rock 4 A Cause Music Festival is an all-female fronted festival that uses the power of music to bring people together and make a difference in the world. Founded by Sharon Lia and Rick Jannotti, the 501(c)3 non-profit organization runs the festival with an organized team of volunteers who are passionate about empowering women and supporting those in need. This year the festival will feature a variety of performances from Black Rose Rebellion, Della Chase, Helen & Terry, Tiffany, Rozes, and Sharon Lia Band. There will also be food vendors, a biergarten and the PINK CARPET experience. Rocked got the opportunity to catch up with founder, Sharon Lia, for an interview to discuss all the details about Ladies That Rock 4 a Cause.
Nadia Pulgar: Can you tell me about the concept and theme of this music festival and what sets it apart from other festivals?
Sharon Lia: This is not just another music festival. It is an enormous volunteer effort born out of perseverance, overcoming, and the unifying power of music to do good in the world. It is an all-female fronted festival that gives a platform to women (who have historically struggled to be in this space). Empowered ladies use their voices to lift up other ladies who are in need. This festival’s purpose is to be joyful, to have fun, and collectively be a part of someone’s overcoming story. No one out there is doing a female-fronted music festival that aims to provide assistance directly to women in need, but we are.
Ladies Who Rock 4 A Cause “You Oughta Know” segment by PBS.
NP: What are the main goals and objectives of the festival? Is there a particular message or purpose it aims to convey to its audience?
SL: Everything is fine until it’s not. We want to provide a fun experience, galvanize the community and raise funds to aid women facing sudden life-changing critical moments directly. Our goal this year is to impact twenty women with our efforts.
NP: How do you go about selecting the artists and performers for the lineup and what criteria do you consider during this process?
SL: This is our secret sauce! Talent is number one, and heart is number two. Great heart, talent, and positivity for this family-friendly event are required.
NP: Can you describe the process of planning and preparing for a music festival and how long does it typically take to organize an event of this scale?
SL: Well, this is a loaded but great question. I have lost count of the number of hours we have clocked. It’s like a pizza pie. There are a hundred slices to this pie, and each piece has tons of ingredients. You have to identify and gather the ingredients, place them all where they need to be at the right time, and omit nothing, or it will be half-baked (smile). Takes about 9 months… like a baby!
NP: Have you faced any obstacles and if so, how have you overcome them?
SL: Me personally? I am an overcomer and have faced a lot of odds. I had grit I didn’t realize and never let that dark voice of fear take over – and it was loud sometimes. I poured parts of my story into my compositions, which is how I prefer to communicate. I found my voice in music. Together with love, I gained an unshakable laser-focused purpose. Obstacles gave me purpose too. I acknowledged that many suffer, and if we can overcome our trials, we must help those who need help overcoming theirs. We are called to do this. Key ingredients to my overcoming: Daily Gratitude, faith, and God. I don’t usually share but let’s just say, **** cancer, abuse, brain injury, Sjogren/Autoimmune diseases, tragic loss, possible homelessness, and 21 surgeries. That’s the shortlist of the fire I walked through that ignited my heart to help others. When we face suffering and pain and look for help, when there is none, we must extend that hand when we recover. We must speak our words to heal and overcome, and they must be louder than the other voice of surrendering – the human spirit is one of surviving – thriving. It takes all of us to help our brothers and sisters in the darkest moments, even if it’s only one soul at a time.
Sharon Lia Band at Ladies Who Rock 4 A Cause
NP: Could you elaborate on what attendees can expect from this year’s festival in terms of performances, activities, and overall experience?
SL: We will have vendors, food, a biergarten, and a PINK CARPET experience where you can get your photos taken on our pink carpet (people LOVE this). We have a VIP Tent for VIP ticket holders (all tickets are available on the website). The music is varied and awesome, great talent! Doors open at 12pm, music starts at 1 pm and goes to about 9:30 with Tiffany closing the show.
NP: Are there any special collaborations or unique features at this year’s festival that you’d like to highlight?
SL: Well, all the ladies!!! We have a great lineup and we are happy to have Tiffany joining us again this year, and new to the festival is Rozes (Rozes – most known for her collaboration “Roses” with duo The Chainsmokers.) Also, I am excited that this year, a dream of mine is coming true! I have wanted to provide an opportunity for budding musicians to perform, and this year the School of Rock students from Pennsylvania will be joining us. They audition to be part of their School of Rock band, so it’s a great bunch of talented kids. I would also like to highlight that our sponsors, festival attendees, vendors, donors, and volunteers make all the difference in the world, and we thank them!
NP: Looking back at previous dates, can you share any memorable moments or success stories from previous editions of the festival?
SL: I will never forget the first festival when we called our beneficiary (at the time, we only had one). The music stopped; We called her on Facetime and showed her all the people and all the things happening for her. Not a dry eye in the house – and she was profoundly touched. That’s what it’s all about. It was also wonderful to be presented with senatorial and city council commendations in 2022 and 2018, respectively.
NP: Are there any plans for expanding or evolving the festival in the future? SL: Yes! We want to do a three-day festival! That is on the horizon!
Tiffany at Ladies Who Rock 4 A Cause
NP: What do you hope attendees will take away from the experience of attending this music festival?
SL: I want people to have a great time. Everyone. Artists, volunteers, vendors, staff, and to feel that deep sense of unity when we all know we are there for a common goal.
NP: What has been your favorite aspect since embarking with Ladies Who Rock 4 A Cause?
SL: I love connecting with people and expanding my experience of others through that outreach. I am touched deeply when people share their stories with me. It happens a lot, and there is this palpable energy in that. I love giving a platform to musicians who want to use their talents for good. It excites me so much – it’s an incredible jolt of positive, rocking energy the whole enchilada.
NP: Any special shoutouts?
SL: Wings Up! It’s Time to Fly! Spread our Wings! Because of our logo, and mission, wings are part of our branding. SO…. I need to shout out my Right-Wing Woman! (you know, like “my right-hand man”). Her name is Kelli Lewis, a musician, singer-songwriter, best bud, and my top ambassador. She has worked tirelessly alongside me, and I am BEYOND thankful for her. Also, to my husband/bandmate/partner in ladies who rock and all things, he is my rock, and when I am pulling all-nighters working on festival details, he is keeping the fires going at home. Love them both dearly and all the folks who work hard in the trenches with me.

From Google Bard: “System of a Down is an American heavy metal band formed in Glendale, California in 1994. The band consists of Serj Tankian (lead vocals, keyboards), Daron Malakian (guitar, vocals), Shavo Odadjian (bass, backing vocals), and John Dolmayan (drums). Since 1997, the band has released five studio albums: System of a Down (1998), Toxicity (2001), Steal This Album! (2002), Mezmerize (2005), and Hypnotize (2005).
The band’s music is a fusion of heavy metal, alternative metal, nu metal, and progressive metal. Their lyrics often deal with political and social issues, such as war, religion, and environmentalism. System of a Down has sold over 40 million albums worldwide, making them one of the most successful heavy metal bands of all time.
The band formed in 1994 when Tankian and Malakian, who were childhood friends, decided to start a band. They recruited Odadjian, who was Tankian’s roommate, and Khachaturian, who was a friend of Malakian’s. The band released their self-titled debut album in 1998, which was a critical and commercial success. Their second album, Toxicity, was even more successful, reaching number one on the Billboard 200 chart.
System of a Down continued to release successful albums in the early 2000s. However, they went on hiatus in 2006 due to creative differences. The band reunited in 2010 and have toured extensively since then. However, they have not released any new music since 2005.
System of a Down is known for their unique sound and their outspoken political views. They have been praised for their social commentary and their ability to combine heavy metal with other genres of music. The band has won numerous awards, including two Grammy Awards. They are considered one of the most influential heavy metal bands of all time.
In 2020, System of a Down released two new songs, “Protect the Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz”, in response to the Armenian genocide. The songs were a critical and commercial success, and helped to raise awareness of the genocide.
The future of System of a Down is uncertain. The band has not released any new music since 2005, and there is no indication when or if they will make a new album. However, they continue to tour and their music remains popular.”
