10 CRAZY Rock & Metal Stories In 2024

Linkin Park returning, Jane’s Addiction imploding, Gojira dominating, and more. This video looks at 10 CRAZY Rock & Metal Stories In 2024.

10 CRAZY Rock & Metal Stories In 2024
Gojira “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ca ira!)
Knocked Loose ft. Poppy “Suffocate” | Jimmy Kimmel Live!

“The rock and metal music scene in 2024 has been marked by unprecedented moments that captured global attention. Gojira made history as the first metal band to perform at the Olympics during the Paris Summer Games, delivering a groundbreaking performance of “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça Ira!)” alongside opera singer Marina Viotti, which earned them a Grammy nomination and widespread acclaim. Linkin Park also made a triumphant return, announcing their comeback with a new album From Zero and introducing Emily Armstrong as their lead vocalist, marking their first new music since Chester Bennington’s passing. In a shocking turn of events, Jane’s Addiction imploded during a Boston concert when frontman Perry Farrell physically attacked guitarist Dave Navarro on stage, leading to the immediate cancellation of their entire tour.. These moments highlight the dynamic and unpredictable nature of rock music in 2024, demonstrating that the genre continues to evolve, surprise, and push boundaries in unexpected ways.” (Perplexity)

Avatar Release Re-Recorded Piano Version of “Tower”

Heavy metal ‘n’ roll, dark, madcap visionaries collectively known as AVATAR — vocalist Johannes Eckerström, guitarists Jonas Jarlsby and Tim Öhrström, bassist Henrik Sandelin, and drummer John Alfredsson — are thrilled to share the brand new, re-recorded piano version of their song “Tower.”

Stream the song here.

This gorgeous new version is the first time the band has re-recorded a track in its career thus far. It’s an uncharacteristically quiet yet incredibly powerful update.

“This version of ‘Tower’ became a special moment in a very special period of our lives,” states Eckerström. “It feels natural to use it as a way to stop and look back for just a moment before we move forward with full force. It’s a thank you to everyone who stands by our side and makes the magic happen.”

The original appears on the band’s beloved and critically acclaimed fifth album, Hail the Apocalypse, which was released in 2014. This rerecord is of incredible significance because AVATAR have neither ownership nor receives any royalties on Hail the Apocalypse, or any preceding albums, since 2015. The band is currently in the midst of a legal battle to reclaim their rights with former record label Fifth Island Music; formerly Gain Records, a part of Sony Music Entertainment.

In other Avatar news, the band is planning to enter the studio at the top of the year in January to begin work on its tenth studio album and the follow up to 2023’s Dance Devil Dance. Jay Ruston will produce. The album is expected to be released sometime in 2025 through their own label Black Waltz Records which is distributed by Thirty Tigers.

Never one to sit back and rest on their haunches, Avatar are also opening for Iron Maiden this summer. All dates are here.

“Bring Me The Horizon has sparked controversy among fans with their recent use of AI-generated visuals in live performances and merchandise. The band showcased AI-powered effects during a live rendition of “AmEN” in São Paulo, Brazil, where frontman Oli Sykes appeared to transform into a demon on-screen. This move has divided their fanbase, with some praising the innovation while others express disappointment and anger. Critics argue that using AI undermines the work of human artists who have previously created visuals for the band. The controversy escalated when fans discovered AI-generated designs on merchandise, including t-shirts priced at $160. Many view this as a betrayal of human creativity and a step too far in the band’s history of pushing boundaries. The backlash reflects a broader debate in the music industry about the role of AI in art and its potential to replace human artists. Despite the criticism, Bring Me The Horizon continues to defend their use of AI as part of their innovative approach to music and performance.” (Perplexity)

“The year 2024 has seen its fair share of disappointing releases in the rock and metal genres, with albums like Falling In Reverse‘s Popular Monster and HARDY’s Quit!! topping the lists of worst albums. Popular Monster, despite its initial hype, has been criticized for its lack of cohesion and overblown production, with many reviewers labeling it as an embarrassment that fails to deliver on its ambitious blend of metal, hip-hop, and pop elements. Critics have pointed out that frontman Ronnie Radke’s vocal performance has become increasingly grating, overshadowing the album’s potential with cringe-worthy lyrics and a forced emotional narrative. Similarly, HARDY’s Quit!! has been dismissed as a hollow attempt at merging country and rock influences, lacking the authenticity and grit that fans expect from the genre. With both albums receiving scathing reviews for their creative shortcomings and uninspired songwriting, they serve as cautionary tales for listeners navigating the 2024 music landscape.” (Perplexity)

Winona Fighter Releases “HAMMS IN A GLASS” Music Video

Rising punk rock act Winona Fighter is excited to share the brand new music video for their hit single “HAMMS IN A GLASS”, taken from their forthcoming debut album MY APOLOGIES TO THE CHEF. Fans can watch the video now, here:

The ‘HAMMS IN A GLASS’ music video is as chaotic as the song,” shares frontwoman and multi-instrumentalist Coco Kinnon. It is completely one take and was totally a “fly by the seat of our pants” type shoot. Jake Johnston over at We’re All Gonna Die did such an amazing job at directing on the fly as we were pretty much trying something different with each take.

She continues: “Something extremely special about this music video is that it feels like a call back to our first and only music video we made before singing to Rise ‘You Look Like A Drunk Phoebe Bridgers’- a one take video, which was done with pretty much pocket change. It was so cool being able to elevate the concept while still keeping it flexible and fun.

MY APOLOGIES TO THE CHEF, featuring recent singles “ATTENTION”, “Swear To God That I’m (FINE)”, “I’M IN THE MARKET TO PLEASE NO ONE”, and more, is set to be released on February 14th via Rise Records. Pre-orders for the new album are available now at https://WinonaFighter.lnk.to/MyApologiesToTheChef.

Along with the album release, the band will also be hitting the road on their headlining Yes, Chef Tour from February 14th – March 7th. Tickets are on-sale now and available at https://winonafighter.com/.

About Winona Fighter

Fronted by the electric Coco Kinnon, the Nashville based punk band is breathing new life into the resurgent punk scene, and they’re on a mission to create punk music that is accessible and accepting to all music lovers willing to listen.

Kinnon’s introduction to the Boston punk rock scene at an early age was the catalyst influence for her current sound and stage presence. Moving to Nashville gave her a task to expose all music lovers to the power of thrashable tunes. After recruiting lead guitarist Dan Fuson, they set off to do the scene Coco had left behind justice. Eventually the two of them added Austin Luther (bass/producer) to the family.

The band is recognized as an energized powerhouse during their live performances. Their shows are a space where all bullshit and ego is left at the door – everyone is welcome, equal and needs to get on their fucking feet. In recent times, they have opened for the bands Incubus, Motion City SoundtrackBadflower, and Something Corporate, in addition to playing multiple sets at Bonnaroo 2023. Other recent performances include Is For Lover’s Festivals and Shiprocked 2024.

Earlier this year Winona Fighter took SXSW by storm, followed by a full US tour with Bayside, Finch, and Armor For Sleep. The band also performed at this year’s Shaky Knees Music Festival, Summerfest, 80/35 Music Festival, and most recently took to the stage at Riot Fest, Oceans Calling Music FestivalLouder Than Life, and Aftershock.

Following their signing to Rise Records the band released new singles “I’m In The Market To Please No One” and “Swear To God That I’m (FINE)”, in addition to new versions of fan favorites “Subaru” and “Wlbrn St Tvrn”. Fans can look forward to more new music in the coming months, including Winona Fighter’s debut full-length record My Apologies To The Chef.

Knocked Loose ft. Poppy – Suffocate

“Knocked Loose made a powerful impact on mainstream television with their recent performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! alongside Poppy, where they delivered a blistering rendition of their GRAMMY-nominated track “Suffocate.” This appearance, which aired on November 26, 2024, marked a significant moment for the band as they showcased their intense sound to a broader audience, highlighting the growing acceptance of heavy music in popular culture. The performance sparked mixed reactions, with some viewers expressing outrage over the band’s heavy style, while many hardcore fans celebrated the visibility it brought to the metal and hardcore scenes. Knocked Loose’s energetic set not only included “Suffocate” but also featured four additional tracks that captivated the live audience outside the studio. This performance is seen as a pivotal moment for the band, potentially introducing their music to new fans and reinforcing their status as one of the leading acts in modern metalcore. As they continue to gain recognition, Knocked Loose is poised to leave an indelible mark on the music industry.” (Perplexity)
