Washington, Dance Party is the new aptly named area where The Midnight performed. October 9th, 2023 marked the third time The Midnight visited the nation’s capital and the immaculate venue The Anthem definitely felt the different vibes from the band as the night went on. Saxophone solos and electronic drum beats made sure no one could stay still the entire evening.
Some of the highlights included the sing-along for “Jason” and “Sunset”, and hearing “Ghost In Your Stereo” at the beginning of the set excited many people at the barricade. Each musician had some time to come forward and the performance never felt rushed or phoned in. Each song helped set a mood rather than just burn through a setlist.
This was my first time seeing The Midnight live. I was told by several people that the shows always offer an upbeat feeling from both the band and the crowd. Last night confirmed that description. After the recent release of Red, White, And Bruised: The Midnight Live, I hope that more people understand just how excellent this group is on stage. It’s rare to see a group of multi-instrumentalists all playing so in sync while keeping the crowd engaged and energetic.
I would recommend seeing The Midnight live to anyone, regardless of listener music preference. This is a rare band that knows how to target everyone while also having a unique sound that is hard to duplicate. Washington Dance Party will hopefully hold another meeting soon with The Midnight.

I haven’t covered the band SAWCE in three years, but they’ve always stuck in the back of my head. There’s just something about the instrumental proggy guitar sound that hits so many sweet spots for me, and only a few other bands, like Polyphia or Intervals, can crank out to this day. If SAWCE isn’t featuring on a 100 Gecs song or jamming out with Anthony Green, they’re in the studio working on something that pushes the boundaries of math rock in concise, harmonic guitar runs that are as endearing as they are masterful in technicality. I’m excited to see their first record in six years come to fruition in Life is Temporary, SAWCE is Forever – how does it pan out?
Life is Temporary, SAWCE is Forever opens with “Fallout”; this melancholic, slow-tempo piece really showcases the pretty songwriting chops as it’s reminiscent of all-timer “The Flight” by Happy Body Slow Brain. Bloopy synth and rising action bring “Crunch” some flair and segues well into main single “Shonen” that serves as the standout track with a groovy drum beat, twangy guitar runs that sync quite well, and fits-like-a-glove bass that can be enjoyed with an isolated ear. The term “firing on all cylinders” really tells the story of this track that is peak SAWCE.
Fittingly-titled, “Emulate” kicks off sounding straight off a splendid NES OST. I felt myself sucked into the second-half as the tapping notes and the mesmerizing production cues gave this track some real character. “Rage Quit” continues the use of synth that really benefits the sound, and you can truly feel the eponymous chaotic ragequit moment near the track’s closure. Later on, Iwas trying to wrap my head around how SAWCE wrote the insane plucking guitars in the bridge of “Strand” before giving up.
A riff can carry a whole song sometimes, and “Lockstep” proves SAWCE knows that as it never gets tiring. Meanwhile, “Green Lane” is a dark horse for best song on Life is Temporary, SAWCE is Forever – it’s so delicate and meticulous enough to craft SAWCE’s most gorgeous offering yet. “Kill’em Dafoe” really provides the Chon vibes that made me fall in love with SAWCE years ago, but this isn’t Chon – SAWCE has eked out their own identity in a big way. That much is obvious in closer “With Love” as it’s evident there was no quality drop in this record’s non-singles.
Those craving a SAWCE record for more than half a decade have been patient, and it’s paid off – Life is Temporary, SAWCE is Forever has several instant favorite tracks from the virtuosos that ensured each song was given its own unique way to shine. I may have wanted a few more epic/fast-paced moments that I know the group are capable of, but can’t fault the tracks we got as they’re still earworms and sure to delight fans that have stuck around this long. Check out Life is Temporary, SAWCE is Forever when it releases Friday, October 13th.

The band just announced that their upcoming self-titled album, Neck Deep, is set for release on January 19th, 2024, via Hopeless Records. Featuring their newest single “It Won’t Be Like This Forever,” the new album encompasses everything Neck Deep have excelled at across their career, enhanced and dialed to eleven. From the bouncing bombast of “Dumbstruck, Dumbf**k” and the ripping intensity of “Sort Yourself Out”, to the poetic introspection of “They Don’t Mean To (But They Do)”, it’s an album that boasts a song for almost any occasion (including, in recent single “Take Me With You”, the impending alien invasion).
In the little over a decade since Neck Deep formed in the Barlow brothers’ spare room in Wrexham, Wales, a lot has changed. From the scrappy, naively hopeful beginnings that define the starting of so many teenage bands, the pop-punks have gone on to be one of British Rock music’s most successful global exports in recent memory: top 5 records in both the US and UK, global touring, viral hits and over a billion streams just some of the fruits of ten years spent mastering their craft.
But now, as the band stand on the brink of their fifth, self-titled LP, there’s an acknowledgement that the more things change, the more – in some ways at least – they stay the same.
“This album is the sound of us knowing ourselves and knowing our ability,” explains frontman and youngest Barlow sibling Ben. “It’s unapologetically us. We’re professional songwriters now and we’ve really honed in on what we’re good at – but it’s also about having fun and enjoying writing these tracks. And there are those little sonic signatures in the mix that even I can’t really put my finger on that just make it Neck Deep. It happens when we get in a room together and it clicks – it’s us just doing our thing like we always have.”
For this record, the band, completed by Ben’s older brother and bassist SebBarlow, guitarists Matt West and Sam Bowden and drummer Matt Powles, took ‘doing their own thing’ – and only their own thing – to the next level. Eschewing a keen list of collaborators and producers eager to work with one of rock’s hottest properties and choosing, instead, to write and record in their own warehouse space, mere miles from where they grew up. Old school, just like it used to be.
Following a storming headline show at Power Trip Festival in California last night, metal icons Judas Priestannounced on stage the arrival of a brand-new studio album entitled Invincible Shield, set for release on March 8, 2024, via Epic Records. “Panic Attack,” the first single from the album, will be released this Friday, October 13, 2023. The album is now available to pre-order here.

With each year the Judas Priest legend continues to grow; 2022 saw them inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and complete a sold-out rescheduled world tour in support of their 50th Anniversary. As we roll into 2024, Judas Priest continue to retain their crown as one of the biggest and best bands in the world.

Explosions In The Sky at 9:30 Club in Washington D.C.
“Whenever we come to D.C., you always show up. We appreciate that.” – Munaf Rayani
Explosions In The Sky are not strangers to the 9:30 Club or Washington D.C., having recorded an NPR special in the venue in 2016. Seven years later, the Austin-based group returned to a sold-out night one of a two-night stop in the nation’s capital.
In support of End, EITS’ latest album, this show set a peaceful mood that carried through the night. With most sold-out shows at 9:30 Club, there is a history of the venue becoming chaotic. On October 3rd, it was a show where everyone was quiet but alert. Seeing Explosions In The Sky live and seeing such a large crowd so calm is a unique spectacle, but once you experience the group’s live performance you understand why.
Kerosene fog on a dimly lit stage was the focal point for everyone. Hearing music from this year’s The End and tracks going back 20 years to The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place helped show EITS’s longevity. Hearing “The Birth And Death Of The Day” live is still an awe-inspiring performance many years after All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone.
Explosions In The Sky proves that music can be an experience without one word sung. Washington D.C. had that lesson perfectly reinforced. I hope that lesson can be carried on by the many bands inspired by this group.

The Gaslight Anthem release new song “Autumn” US Headline Tour Underway Now
First New Album In Nearly A Decade, History Books Arrives Friday, October 27th, 2023.
The Gaslight Anthem release their latest single, “Autumn,” available everywhere now. The song drifts into a contemplative mood as the band share a deeply felt meditation on impermanence, set against a lovely backdrop of luminous harmonies and oceanic guitar work. “Autumn” heralds The Gaslight Anthem’s first new album together in almost a decade, HISTORY BOOKS, arriving Friday, October 27 on their own Rich Mahogany Recordings label via Thirty Tigers. Pre-orders are available now.
“I wrote this song on a really beautiful fall day, looking out the window and thinking, ‘How many days like this do we get to see?’” says The Gaslight Anthem’s Brian Fallon. “So much of life is just trying to get by, but every now and then you have those moments where you can really feel grateful for the small things.”
The Gaslight Anthem is currently on the road marking HISTORY BOOKS and their recent return to action with North American headline dates, highlighted by an instantly sold-out series of intimate record release shows at Jersey City, NJ’s historic White Eagle Hall on October 27-30. In addition, the band will headline WFUV’s annual “Holiday Cheer for WFUV” benefit event, set for December 6 at New York City’s renowned Beacon Theatre. Pre-sales are available now through Thursday, October 5 at 10:00 pm ET (Password: WFUVCHEER). General on-sales begin Friday, October 6 at 11:00 am ET. The band will also perform in Chicago on December 8th as part of Q101’s Twisted Xmas concert series.
The band also recently unveiled an eagerly anticipated EU/UK tour, making stops in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Ireland, and the United Kingdom through March 2024. Additional UK dates follow in July. For full details and ticket availability, please see www.thegaslightanthem.com.
Produced by GRAMMY® Award-winner Peter Katis (The National, Kurt Vile) at his Tarquin Studios in Bridgeport, CT, HISTORY BOOKS includes such recently released singles as “Little Fires,” featuring guest vocals from PUP frontman Stefan Babcock and now joined by an official music video directed by photographer/filmmaker Kelsey Hunter Ayres and streaming now at YouTube. Further highlights include “Positive Charge,” and the heavy-hearted title track, “History Books,” the latter of which sees frontman Brian Fallon trading duet vocals with longtime band champion and fellow New Jerseyan Bruce Springsteen. An official music video, directed by Ayres, is streaming now on YouTube. “History Books” was met with immediate acclaim from such outlets as the Associated Press, which declared it “big-hearted freeway rock, made ascendant by frontman Brian Fallon and Springsteen’s tremulous harmonies.”
The Gaslight Anthem’s sixth full-length and first new album in nearly a decade, HISTORY BOOKS sees the New Jersey-bred band once again bringing their soulful breed of life-affirming punk to explore everything from mortality and mental illness to the more precarious dimensions of human connection. In the glorious tradition of their seminal 2008 sophomore album, THE ’59 SOUND, the new LP matches its raw emotional power with the rich craft and wildly triumphant energy that has defined the band since its very start.
“None of us wanted to make a very somber or serious record showing how much we’ve matured,” says Fallon. “We’ve all changed and grown and learned so much, but the overall mood was a feeling of excitement to be back together and making music that means something to us.”
The Gaslight Anthem made their long-awaited return to the road last year with their first world headline tour in four years. Hailed by Kerrang! as “an amazing, career-spanning 21-song setlist…(that) celebrated all eras of their music,” the tour lit up stages across North America, Europe, and the United Kingdom before culminating in October with a sold-out home state finale at Holmdel, NJ’s PNC Bank Arts Center.
The Gaslight Anthem is: Brian Fallon (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Alex Rosamilia (lead guitar, backing vocals), Alex Levine (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Benny Horowitz (drums, percussion, backing vocals).
