Lamb Of God Ignite Homecoming Show with Mastodon on Ashes Of Leviathan Tour

Ashes Of Levithan Tour. A metal celebration honoring the 20th anniversary of two amazing albums: Ashes Of the Wake from Lamb Of God, and Levithan from Mastodon. When this tour was announced earlier in 2024, it seemed like the perfect matchup and reason for the bands to tour. Adding Kerry King of Slayer with is solo project and up and coming British metalcore band Malevolence added extra depth to one of the best metal tours of the year.

Lamb Of God Homecoming with Mastodon, Kerry King, Malevolence #Shorts

The Richmond, VA performance was the homecoming show for Lamb Of God. 20 years celebrating Ashes Of The Wake and riling up Richmond is a good reason to celebrate. The band had many friends and family in attendance along with a packed Virginia Credit Union Live (which is a venue I do hope gets used more in the area).

Hearing the crowd know the lyrics and sing sections of Ashes Of The Wake reinforced my belief that heavy music can last with people. At one point, VA State Senator Danica Roem was seen crowd surfing (as seen by guitarist Mark Morton). A Senator of the people, proving they know their assignment.

Between songs, Randy Blythe took a moment to talk about how this was Lamb Of God’s first performance at Virginia Credit Union Live since 2016 for a GWARBQ. Blythe also thanks many Richmond metal and hardcore bands, including young and upcoming ones Blythe recommended checking out. It was clear that Blythe wanted to show respect to Richmond as the city has treated the band so well over 20+ years.

Mastodon brought back their massive video boards and trippy visuals to play their brand of groove metal roughly one year after the band’s last visit to Virginia Credit Union Live. The group’s sound along with the presentation has always been impressive since the first time I saw the group perform in 2017. I hope more people get to experience Mastodon live.

After Mastodon’s set, Brann Dailor walked to center stage and told the story about how 20 years ago, Brann was at a Richmond Best Buy and saw both Levithan and Ashes Of The Wake at the best sellers section in the CD aisle. Dailor called Randy Blythe who also couldn’t believe it. As a former employee of Best Buy 20 years ago (Store #773 to be specific), I can confirm that both albums were indeed selling well across the US. Best Buy used to be a great place for music, and Mastodon and Lamb Of God are still great to hear in 2024.

Along with Slayer returning to the stage later this year at Riot Fest, Kerry King is working with his solo project. A thrash inclusion to a tour like this was a good choice and hearing King’s solo work along with Slayer classics was a fun addition to the evening. Kerry King still sounds great while shredding and has a great presence live.

This was my first time seeing Malevolence live. I had known the band from hearing singles on SiriusXM Octane and it was good to put faces to the sound. Malevolence’s vocalist gave credit to Lamb Of God and being proud to perform in the hometown of one of Malevolence’s favorite bands. This band was a strong opener.

Ashes Of Leviathan Tour is something unique in metal: a tour that celebrates the anniversary of two successful albums from bands that have remained friends over the years WHILE proving that metal has lasting power. Here’s hoping there are more examples of this in the future.

Interview: Marc Centanni (Harpazo) discusses debut album, ‘The Crucible,’ rediscovering his faith

When I returned to Rocked, I chose to emphasize that transition by reviewing an album that especially resonated with me — The Crucible, a concept album by guitarist Marc Centanni and producer Gary Wehrkamp, better known collectively as Harpazo. Originally, Marc had messaged me about reviewing the album, and I informed him that with an album of this magnitude, an interview about it would serve as the perfect companion piece. After some scheduling adjustments, we were finally able to make this happen.

Marc and I dived into the many and varied bands who shaped his guitar playing, the chance meeting between he and Gary that changed his trajectory, the assembling of both Christian and progressive metal talent for this project, and how getting back in touch with his Christian faith transformed his outlook on life.

Powerwolf – Wake Up The Wicked | Album Review

Germany’s cult of werewolves are back on the power metal prowl and it’s more than welcome. This is an album filled with songs to sing along with as anthems like “1589”. The picked up speed in songs like “Sinners Of The Seven Seas” and “Thunderpriest” give Powerwolf a better pulse. That energy is refreshing. Faulk’s vocals are booming. The guitars and keys are fun, it’s exactly what Powerwolf is known for. There are no surprises at this point from the religious lycanthropes but the music is so bombastic and infectious that it’s hard to be upset. This is on par with past Powerwolf albums in the best of ways. Over half this album is destined to be shredded and shouted live as this album has a big stage feel. Power metal should be energetic, loud, and fun. Wake Up The Wicked exemplifies that idea. These wolves are once again good boys. 8/10.

“Lars Ulrich, the co-founder and drummer of Metallica, has been a polarizing figure in the world of heavy metal music. Known for his distinctive drumming style and contributions to Metallica’s songwriting, Ulrich’s abilities behind the kit have been both praised and criticized throughout his career. While he played a crucial role in shaping Metallica’s iconic sound, particularly during their thrash metal era in the 1980s, his technical skills have often been questioned by critics and fans alike. Some argue that Ulrich’s drumming lacks the precision and complexity of his peers in the thrash metal genre, citing issues with timing and repetitive fills. However, supporters emphasize his unique approach to composition and arrangement, which has been instrumental in crafting Metallica’s hit songs. Despite the controversies surrounding his drumming, Ulrich’s impact on metal music is undeniable, and his style remains an integral part of Metallica’s sound, even as it has evolved over the decades.” (Perplexity)

“In the vibrant world of metal music, “hot takes” are a common phenomenon, sparking passionate debates among fans. These hot takes often involve bold, unfiltered opinions about bands, albums, and the genre’s evolution. Whether it’s declaring that Slipknot’s early records will gain greater reverence over time or critiquing specific songs like “The Toxic Waltz” by Exodus, metal enthusiasts are never shy about voicing their controversial views. Platforms like Reddit, Rate Your Music, and social media channels are rife with these discussions, showcasing the diverse and often polarizing perspectives within the metal community. This culture of hot takes not only fuels lively conversations but also highlights the deep personal connections fans have with the music, making the metal scene uniquely dynamic and ever-evolving.” (Perplexity)

Interview: Alma Perez of COATL discusses her career progression, importance of resilience

Los Angeles’s COATL was formed in the early 2000s by singer/guitarists Alma Perez and Israel Vega. COATL’s signature approach, a fusion of alternative metal with seasonings of indigenous melodies and lore, was initially encapsulated on their 2006 debut album, El Despertar De La Serpiente. Three years later, the band’s sophomore album, El Llamado Del Jaguar, not only amplified those influences, but expanded their fanbase nationally as well as in Mexico. By 2018, the band’s reinvigorated drive led to a series of impactful singles culminating in the release of 2021’s Samskara. Late last year, they would reach another creative milestone with their fourth and latest album, Shakti. The album explores a larger emphasis on Indian instrumentation, while competently pairing themes of ancient mysticism with those of a cynical modern world. Currently, the band is working on their follow up and will resume touring in mid-August, starting with two shows in Mexico on the 16th and 17th.

On Monday, Alma Perez came on to Rocked to discuss her penchant for Mexican history, the band’s growth throughout their discography, the logistics of their live shows, and how resilience has kept her grounded both in and outside of music.

Chat Pile Announce New Album ‘Cool World’

Chat Pile

Oklahoma City noise rock quartet Chat Pile have returned with their follow up to 2022’s breakout album God’s Country with Cool World, the new 10-song LP set for release on October 11th via The Flenser [pre-order].

Besides being the name of a largely forgotten (and panned) 90s film, Cool World makes for an apt title of Chat Pile’s sophomore full-length record. In the context of a Chat Pile record, the words are steeped in a grim double entendre that not only evokes imagery of a dying planet but a progression from the band’s previous work, moving the scope of its depiction of modern malaise from just “God’s Country” to the entirety of humankind. “’Cool World‘ covers similar themes to our last album, except now exploded from a micro to macro scale, with thoughts specifically about disasters abroad, at home, and how they affect one another,” says vocalist Raygun Busch.  “If I had to describe the album in one sentence,” Busch continues, “It’s hard not to borrow from Voltaire, so I won’t resist – ‘Cool World‘ is about the price at which we eat sugar in America.”

Today, album opener “I Am Dog Now” arrives with a music video directed by Will Mecca.  Stin (bass, Chat Pile) says, “Will’s vision captures the essence of ‘I Am Dog Now’ by channeling his specific style of low-fi, exploitation cinema aesthetic into a dusty, religious bad-trip exclusive to the southern plains of America. Eagle eyed viewers may actually notice shots of the literal chat piles from which we take our name.”

Like the towering mounds of toxic waste, the music of Chat Pile is a suffocating, grotesque embodiment of the existential anguish that has defined the 21st Century. It figures that a band with this abrasive, unrelenting, and outlandish of a sound has stuck as strong of a chord as it has. Dread has replaced the American dream, and Chat Pile’s music is a poignant reminder of that shift – a portrait of an American rock band molded by a society defined by its cold and cruel power systems.

Though very much on-brand with Chat Pile’s signature flavor of cacophonous, sludgy noise rock, the band’s shift to a global thematic focus on Cool World not only compliments the broader experimentations it employs with their songwriting but also how they dissect the album’s core theme of violence.

Melded into the band’s twisted foundational sound are traces of other eclectic genre stylings, with examples of gazy, goth-tinged dirges to abrasive yet anthemic alt/indie-esque hooks and off-kilter metal grooves only scratching the surface of what can be heard in the album’s ten tracks. “While we wanted our follow-up to ‘God’s Country’ to still capture the immediate, uncompromising essence of Chat Pile, we also knew that with ‘Cool World,’ we’d want to stretch the definition of our ‘sound’ to reflect our tastes beyond just noise rock territory,” reflects bassist Stin. “Now that we had some form of creative comfort zones in place after hitting that milestone of putting out a full-length record, album #2 felt like the perfect opportunity to challenge those limits.” Besides stylistically stretching the boundaries of the Chat Pile sound, Cool World is also the band’s first record to have someone else handle mixing duties, with Ben Greenberg of Uniform (Algiers, Drab Majesty, Metz) capturing and further amplifying the quartet’s unmistakably outsider and folk-art edge.

The proverbial thread tying all of the experimentation on Cool World together is the depth to which Chat Pile dissects the album’s theme of violence, and the record itself is apocalyptically bleak. Sure, Chat Pile’s debut album was plenty disturbing with its B-movie-inspired interpretation of a “real American horror story”; what Chat Pile depicts on Cool World is unsettling not just from its visceral noise rock onslaught, but from depicting how all sorts of atrocities are pretty much standard parts of modern existence.

Cool World will be released via The Flenser on October 11, 2024.  See Chat Pile on the road this November with label mates Agriculture and Mamaleek in select markets – tickets will be available at chatpile.net/shows and general on-sale is Friday, July 19th at 10am local time.  More news soon.
