Album Review: Incubus – 8

A review on Incubus’ 8th full album about the down side of love, simply titled 8.

Text Review:

Since 1991, Incubus has been a staple of the alternative rock scene with platinum selling albums, #1 debuts, massive touring schedules and a legion of swooning fans.  Outside of a small break in the late 2000’s, Incubus has consistently been performing and presenting new albums and Eps every several years with mostly positive praise.  Now in 2017 comes the band’s 8th full album simply titled 8.  While you can expect surprised including a song featuring Skrillex who co-produced the album, 8 is planning on being an album about the darker and lonelier side of live.  Written out of personal experiences and the overall concept, 8 intend to be a bit personal and moody.

When asked specifically why this the direction for the 8th full album from Incubus, Brandon Boyd made a great statement saying: “We live in dark times, my friend. So what we’re doing as artists is acting as a mirror to culture here and there and hopefully offering little glimmers of hope through the joy in music we all have.”  While alt rock albums about love aren’t exactly new territory, I have to admit I like the idea of 41-year-old Brandon Boyd writing about his own experiences of trying to make things work in a relationship but not being able to.  It’s not the typical “Love Hurts’ fair as it gives a more specific dynamic than the typical fair of teenagers in love and not caring who else knows about it.

As new music started filtering out from the new Incubus album we were given several songs from the upcoming 11 track 8.  “Nimble Bastard” was the first of those released preview tracks and definitely has an energy behind it.  Even if not resembling much of the overall theme that was previously mentioned, it works as a single and offers a memorable hook in the chorus with the song title.  The first half of this song feels strong and energetic with the verses offering a good groove along with Boyd’s delivery of not getting too loud but just sounding like he’s having fun.  It has an upbeat feeling.  This song along with “No Fun” the opening track which also feels energetic begins 8 on a bit of a lighthearted note before the real theme kicks in and deeper lyrics start to take effect.

In past albums like S.C.I.E.N.C.E. and Make Yourself, you got a sense of creativity and heard a strong delivery from everyone playing.  As time has gone on past A Crow Left Of Murder it has felt like more of a safer predictable style of performing and going through the motions of what people expect.  That is how 8 feels after the first two tracks.  As the album goes on you feel a steady pulse and rhythm that stays the course.  There is meaning here and you can tell that there is effort in getting these emotions across, but there also is a strong feeling of the cruise control being turned on and just steadily going through the motions.  It’s not so much a desire to create something new as it is getting said message across in the same format that has already been tested.

The song “Glitterbomb” another song that was released early is probably the best example of what to expect through much of the album.  There are definitely good lines like “I was once your friend and ended up your victim.”, but the stretched guitar riffs and isolated drumming makes it feel longer than the track actually is.  It drags, and it’s not the only song on 8 that has this feeling.  Songs like “Familiar Faces”, “Loneliest” and “Love In A Time of Surveillance” have a good flow and well written lyrics but there is no real appeal to listen again after they are over.  The track “Make No Sound In the Digital Forest” is a good instrumental track but also doesn’t add much overall to the album.  Taking away a good instrumental track, “No Fun” and “Nimble Bastard”, then isn’t much to really hook the listener.

The intention of the album and writing about past experiences in love and friendship is admirable, but this feels like Incubus going through the motions as opposed to really delivering something invigorating.  While NOTHING on here is a chore to listen to, it’s also lacking in excitement.  The music from Incubus makes you wish you were listening to a previous Incubus album instead.  Overall, 8 has a refined focus and strong lyrics but falls short when really connecting it with flat lining music.  It definitely will satisfy longtime Incubus fans but it may not do much to win over new listeners who are hoping for more of the sound in “Nimble Bastard”.  It’s a good attempt in theme but ultimately leaves you wishing for more variety and something to remember.

ARCADEA (MASTODON, ZRUDA, WITHERED) SIGN WITH RELAPSE RECORDS; NEW ALBUM OUT JUNE 16TH

Hailing from the fringes of the cosmos, Arcadea, will make their arrival known in 2017 with a debut, self-titled album due out on June 16th. Today, the synth/psych band has announced they have inked a deal with Relapse Records to release the record. Pre-orders and new music will be announced in the coming weeks.

Unlike their other bands, Arcadea uses only keyboards in a unique blend of crushing, organic drums and psychedelic synthesizers. The music is at once electronic but not electronica, synthetic but not processed, heavy but not metal.

The album envisions a future 5 billion years from now, where the impending collision of galaxies creates a new order of planets. Where cold, distant moons pledge alliance to new suns and expanding gas giants implode into black holes. Ancient drones, forever adrift, record toxic tales of love between dying stars. Where lifeforms in suspended animation, dream among the ice rings of Saturn and cosmic war wages among gods and planets. It is in this universe that Arcadea reign supreme as the last surviving space wizards since the final extinction.

THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE Set To Release UNDER YOUR SPELL June 9, 2017

“If Katniss Everdeen was re-imagined as a goth and a Gundam pilot waging a one-woman war to free Panem from ghoulish monsters as big as the sky, Toronto’s The Birthday Massacre would be uniquely suited to pen the score. And who wouldn’t want to watch that movie?” – Vanyaland

“Darkly lush, dancepop delight.” – All Music Guide

“Amid all the talented and adventurous bands of the second New Wave explosion, The Birthday Massacre is one of the best kept secrets.” – Jersey Beat

TBM Under Your Spell

On June 9, 2017, Metropolis recording artists THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE will release UNDER YOUR SPELL, their seventh release. These 11 songs reveal a side of the Canadian band that audiences may not have seen before.  Proving to be the band’s most intimate and emotive record to date, Under Your Spell is a captivating hybrid of 80’s, electronica, and aggressive guitars, fused with dark, cinematic melodic progressions, blending the expansive breadth of The Birthday Massacre’s signature sound, creating a deeply personal, immersive collection of songs.

In addition, the band has announced a North American tour that kicks off on May 18th at Toronto’s The Opera House and circles the continent, hitting cities such as Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dallas, Orlando, NYC and Boston. (full dates below)

Driven by band’s signature, unique blend of spiraling synth melodies, walls of guitar, and evocative vocals, Under Your Spell hits all the bases that audiences have come to reliably expect from the band – songs that range from dark, aggressive anthems to danceable, pretty pop – and every shade in between.

There is a rawness to the emotion that is expressed through this album, an openness and vulnerability that perhaps feels new for the listener. It becomes clearer than ever through this release of the tight bond that exists between the band, and their willingness to explore heartbreak and loss together. With these songs, they have entered the darkness of the most fragile emotions, and come back with a cohesive and detailed portrait of music that captures both the anger and the hope that exist within a moment in time.

The Birthday Massacre continue to make the music that is so very unique to them. Once again, they have managed to create an album that somehow feels so familiar, yet challenges the listener to continue alongside them on their ever-changing, ever-growing journey.

COHEED & CAMBRIA’S CLAUDIO SANCHEZ RELEASES NEWEST INSTALLMENT OF “THE AMORY WARS: GOOD APOLLO, I’M BURNING STAR IV”

amory wars

Issue one of Claudio Sanchez’s comic series/space odyssey, The Amory Wars: Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV was released today via Evil Ink Comics/Boom! Studios.  The 12-issue sci-fi series is the 3rd in a line of comics that follow the story arc from Sanchez’s band, Coheed and Cambria’s concept albums.  The new series loosely follows the lyrics and tone of their massive selling 2005 album, Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness (Columbia), and elaborates on the graphic novel of the same name which was released as a companion piece to the album on it’s original release. Purchase the first issue now at http://www.evilinkcomics.com/.

PUBLIC PREVIEW: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ffuivuiuwxf5ni0/AACoHi-jNOvy4bzuerXZ3kQaa?dl=0

The story of Good Apollo flows around protagonist Claudio Kilgannon (son of Coheed and Cambria) who until now has been mostly in hiding since the death of his parents; his advancing physical powers have drawn him out.   It’s becoming clear to Kilgannon and those around him that the he is one mentioned in the prophecies, sent by God to destroy the universe he lives in because too many mistakes were made by the elite. But to Kilgannon, none of this makes any sense.  Ambellina, the blue-skinned fallen Prise who’s mission it is to watch over him – helps guide him on the decisions he has in front of him.

Evil Tri-Mage Wilhelm Ryan is out to stop Kilgannon, and imprison every last human living in Heaven’s fence, or worse, steal their souls.  “Good Apollo..” introduces a character that crosses the fictional plane of the series: the “Writing Writer” Ryder, the alleged creator of these worlds, whose heartbreak in life is beginning to affect the fictional story, and causing him to lose control of his characters to their own free will.

Claudio Sanchez, with the help of wife, writer Chondra Echert, veteran comic artist Rags Morales (Action Comics, Identity Crisis) and colorist Emilio Lopez have delivered a eye popping, complex thriller for both long time fans to delve deep into the Coheed/Amory Wars mythos as well as a smooth entry point for new riders to hop on the train.

Coheed and Cambria have always done things in a grandiose way, and this time is no different.  The comic release, though years in the making, drops the very same month they embark on the 6 week “Neverender GAIBSIV tour, performing the progressive juggernaut of an album that inspired it, Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, in its entirety across the US and Europe. They are also set to release the vinyl for the first time, which will include a Record Store Day exclusive color, a tour version, and a web exclusive version available April 28 via http://www.coheedandcambria.com/.

The upcoming Neverender GAIBSIV tour will be supported by The Dear Hunter, and will include performances at festivals including Welcome To Rockville, Las Rageous, Carolina Rebellion and Rock on the Range.

Album Review: The Maine – Lovely, Little, Lonely

An album review on The Maine’s 6th full album Lovely, Little, Lonely.

Text Review:

While a lot of indy and alt rock bands get big through mainstream attention and jumping to a big label, there are some bands that spread almost completely through word of mouth until just about everyone has heard the name in one form or another.  There is a massive amount of consistent work to get attention that way and for word to spread, but it’s been proven to work for many bands.  The Maine, not from Maine as many believe but actually from Arizona, are a band who got their attention from their name spreading after touring with bigger bands until they were followed by thousands of fans.  Now ten years after the band’s formation comes their sixth full album Lovely, Little, Lonely being produced entirely on their own.

According to The Maine, the new album was written with the intent to push their own boundaries and create something out of a comfort zone.  Traveling between New York and California for the writing process the band wanted to make something that listeners can connect with.  In an interview online with The Prelude Press, Kennedy Brock said: “This record is an emotional rollercoaster and I think there is a healthy amount of the ups and downs to be taken from it. I want this record to be there when you need it. Happy or sad and everything in between.”

One attribute that I have always placed with The Maine is their ability to create a unique rhythm and background to their songs.  The stage is setup perfectly with the mood and style all for the standout elements to take charge.  Whether it’s their slower and more peaceful tracks or the more energetic ones that resemble the days of summer in teen movies, you can hear a strong base in each song they create.  It’s overlooked by many bands who just want to blow out ear drums and go straight for a hook, but The Maine take their time and set up a base well.

“Bad Behavior” is the energetic alt rock single that is guaranteed to be on a lot of college girls summer playlists.  The guitar riffs start the track strong while the backbeat and rhythm is mellow enough to let John O’Callaghan’s voice stand out.  It’s simple but easy to listen to and sounds like a Warped Tour anthem.  Like “Bad Behavior” there are other tracks that have that energy on top of a good rhythm like “Black Butterflies & Déjà Vu” and the album opener “Don’t Come Down”.  On the flip side there are slower and more calming tracks including the three broken up title tracks “Lovely”, “Little” and “Lonely” which seem like connected interludes that sound great but leave you wanting much more as they are so short.  The deeper and softer sounding tracks on Lovely, Little, Lonely I think have the most replay value.  The more energetic singles on this album aren’t bad but they are admittedly a bit forgettable.  Tracks like “Lost in Nostalgia” and “I Only Wanna Talk To You” which are back to back later in the album give much more depth and feel like the real songs that could connect with just about anyone.

“Lost In Nostalgia”, the three title tracks, these songs all feel like something not only unique but somehow inspiring to listen to.  I understand the statement from Kennedy Brock about being an emotional roller coaster and these songs thanks to the music from the rhythm guitar and bass are the reason for that.  On the lyric side there is a lot to take in and you can tell that there is meaning in most of these songs, but it’s some of the more upbeat single style tracks that feel the most lacking.  They aren’t bad in any way, but there isn’t much appeal to them.  “Do You Remember”, “Taxi” and “Don’t Come Down” all have that feeling.  There are still high moments in some of the energy however.

The Maine have a big underground following for a reason and they have proven they definitely know how to play and perform a great live show.  While this album is good I feel that the strongest points of it are the quitter ones AND the ones in the background on the lower half of the songs.  The higher end with the vocals and guitar aren’t bad, but they overshadow some gorgeous work that really should get more attention.  Overall, Lovely, Little, Lonely should make fans of The Maine happy and give them more of a reason to connect with them.  The pros definitely outweigh the cons and even though there are some tracks that may not register, there is still a lot to appreciate on this album that you need to hear to fully appreciate.

Album Review: Demon Hunter – Outlive

An album review on Outlive, the eighth full album from Demon Hunter.

https://vimeo.com/211094557

Text Review:

Christina bands in mainstream rock and metal are hard to come by in 2017.  So years back when Demon Hunter claimed they stopped wanting to “ride the fence” between being a Christian and Non-Christian band, it did not slow down the bands progress or standing as Demon Hunter has been a consistent mainstay for well over a decade.  Coming three years after Extremist, being their fastest selling album that charted at #16 on the Billboard 200, Demon Hunter bring in heavy riffs and connecting melodies in Outlive, the band’s eighth studio album.  This new album being supported through PledgeMusic also supports the fact that the Demon Hunter’s fans have no problem with the band sharing their religious beliefs so long as the music keeps coming.

Outlive comes after a time of change for the band as personal experiences have truly worn on the men and most of the band members have their own children now.  They aren’t the same Demon Hunter that released a self-titled debut back in 2002.  But as for most bands that are capable of pushing forward and making music over the years, change and growth are inevitable.   As the members of Demon Hunter may have grown, one thing that has stayed consistent in a good way is the band’s delivery of melody and heavy themes in their music.  And where Extremist definitely had a lot of melody in their composure, Outlive carries that but also turns up the volume and gets MUCH heavier.  This 2017 album feels more on the metal side than their 2014 success.  Outlive has already released several songs to the public including “Cold Winter Sun”, “Died In My Sleep” and “Half As Dead”, which are all grouped together in the album track listing.  It’s these three songs that connect with each other that also represent the style of the album.  “Cold Winter Sun” especially starts out the album early as a baseline for what to expect on Outlive.

“Cold Winter Sun” feels like a bigger step up in lyric content for Demon Hunter than I have heard in quite a while.  There are some great lines in this song that not only are good to sing along with but are well connected and hits deep.  Ryan Clark and company really took some time and made some well thought material to go along with the rhythm here and it shows in the work.

Speaking of Ryan Clark, his vocal delivery in “Cold Winter Sun” has a clean sound and isn’t over the top.  The guitar riffs stroll along at a good speed and the rhythm from the percussion drives this song all while Clark is able to give a clear delivery.  That description of the vocal work on the music can be said for much of this album as well, not just the three previously released songs.  There are definitely tracks to hook listeners and get attention to the album on radio play but the hidden gems on this album may be what satisfy long time Demon Hunter fans the most.  Tracks like “Jesus Wept” and “One Less” are where Demon Hunter get a bit angrier in their delivery and it works well to offer more variety with the melodies along with the hard rock radio singles.

“One Less” has that growl in Clark’s voice and the guitar slide and bend really adds a flare.  The bass and symbols hit hard and that all adds to the intensity.  Everything sounds tight and synchronized from everyone in the group.  I know it’s all up for personal choice but Demon Hunter is a band that can be seen as having a lot of golden material that isn’t heard by mainstream fans, and songs on Outlive add to that argument.  The highlights of this album bookend in the sense that you’ll be listening to the opening and closing few tracks the most.  Along with the slower brooding track “Patience” and barn burner “Slight The Odds” which incorporates a string section leading to heavy style changes from verse to chorus, it’s safe to say that the majority of this album’s playtime will be skipping some of the center and heading over the edges.

Keeping your fans happy while living your own personal life is something many bands have to come to terms with or else they fade away.  Demon Hunter not only succeeded in getting through rough times and raising families but also delivering to their fans consistently.  Regardless of how heavy you prefer their style; they still find a way make something solid.  Overall, Outlive excels at having both radio material and hard hitting tracks for every type of hard rock and metal fan.  Longtime fans of Demon Hunter will be satisfied, newcomers will have something to check out, and we are given more proof that there are bands that can outlive the hard times and still continue to rock.
