Green Day – Saviors | Album Review

A slight return to form for the band. After Father Of All, Green Day played this one safe while still delivering some big hooks. Some of the best tracks are the short two minute blasts like “Look Ma, No Brains!” and “Living In The ’20s”. Along with that, “Coma City” also was a pleasant surprise. There is definite filler in the album however. “Bobby Sox” and “Suzie Chapstick”, despite fun names, are absolutely unnecessary. Other songs like “The American Dream Is Killing Me” have good lyrics but sound similar to much of Green Day’s past standard four-chord discography. Saviors has more hits than misses and you can still hear the fuel ignite from the pop-punk trio 20 years after American Idiot. 7/10

Green Day Saviors Album Review
Green Day “Look Ma, No Brains!”
Green Day “Coma City”

___

“Green Day’s latest album, “Saviors,” has garnered mixed reviews from both critics and fans. Some highlights of the album include:
-A return to the band’s classic sound, with echoes of their earlier albums “Dookie” (1994) and “American Idiot” (2004)
-A sharp and sarcastic take on the sociopolitical landscape, with a caustic humor and contagious melodies
-A handsome bookend to “American Idiot,” with a more refined and critical approach to the cultural currency of their release
However, some critics argue that the album is:
-Laboured and world-weary, with a sense of weary resignation in the lyrics
-Sonically competent but safe, stale, and predictable, lacking the impenetrable hooks and songwriting abilities of their earlier work.
-Filled with tracks that sound like lesser versions of other songs throughout Green Day’s discography.
Despite the mixed reviews, fans have generally viewed “Saviors” as an uptick in Green Day’s career, particularly compared to their previous albums. The album has received positive responses from both fans and critics, with some noting that it is a return to form for the band.” (Perplexity)

Invent Animate Release New Single “Sleepless Deathbed”

Invent Animate

Atmospheric metalcore trailblazers Invent Animate are kicking off 2024 by releasing their new single Sleepless Deathbed and the accompanying visualizer (via UNFD). Prior to today, the band released the titular album title track Heavener and the official music video from their phenomenal latest album. When asked about the inspiration behind today’s release, the band shared:

The song is about hallucinating a state of your own death and being stuck in that lifeless plane of constant and repeating discomfort. Where all your bad memories, big and small, are falling down on you in the form of rain and making you feel it all again, physically all at once. At a point, you start to think this might be death and that it might be like this forever. It weighs you down so much that your ground melts and you fall down through a static space through your own memories. The fall becomes the sleepless deathbed, where you’ve come to serve until the end of time. This is one of those songs that was written naturally, we knew we wanted something fast and heavy and we knew lyrics needed to represent physical panic.

About Sleep Token:

2023 was the year of Sleep Token and 2024 is looking to be much the same.

The album has generated 400 million streams, whilst standout single “The Summoning” has generated 150 million streams alone, causing the track to trend on Twitter and take the #1 song spot on a host of international Spotify viral charts, as well as being selected as a “YouTube Trending Artist On The Rise,” featuring on YouTube’s homepage, viewed by millions of people every day.

The unprecedented accolades keep rolling in, between the fact that ST has never played a headline show in the UK that didn’t sell out, “Aqua Regia” picking up consistent airplay on the Radio One “Future Sounds” show hosted by Clara Amfo, plus huge pop star Demi Lovato sharing Sleep Token’s music with her 153 million Instagram followers, Sleep Token consistently smash boundaries that they refused to acknowledge in the first place.

And even though Sleep Token notoriously do not speak to the press (out of necessity, not ego or gimmick), media can’t help but write about the phenomenon, reporting on the band’s every move; NME note, “Sleep Token offer their fans an entire world to immerse themselves in if they so wish. It’s a place of escapism, and the foundation of a huge fan community that’s dedicated to studying the band’s creativity. While they have the same fervor as any other fandom, there’s still a notable difference.” Elsewhere, Metal Hammer called them “the most exciting band in metal right now.”

The Color Morale is back – here’s their plans for 2024

After a hefty wait, post-hardcore band The Color Morale has returned in a big way.

The Rockford, Illinois outfit was dormant for more than half a decade before taking the stage in June of 2023 at So What Music Festival. Now that the cobwebs have shaken and the five-piece is motivated, fans have a lot to be excited for. On January 13th, The Color Morale played their first hometown show in seven years at The WC Social Club in West Chicago, IL, along with For The Fallen Dreams, Of Virtue, Boys of Fall, and These Fading Visions. A cathartic return to form, the band played their longest setlist to date at fourteen songs that spanned their entire discography.

During the performance, vocalist Garret Rapp shared details on what’s to come for The Color Morale. Rapp mentioned that long-awaited new music from the band is being recorded in 2024 and that he “can’t wait to get back into the vocal booth”. In addition, this won’t be the last time we see The Color Morale take the stage – the band mentioned that they would love to make this winter-time show an annual event. The WC Social Club’s owner previously worked Mojoe’s in Joliet, IL, a metal mainstay in the early 2010s that showcased The Color Morale – it’s always great to see these long-standing relationships pay dividends for fans.

There’s always the chance for The Color Morale to play some more pop-up shows in the interim, but Garret confided in the audience that all the members of the band are leading outstanding, dedicated lives outside of music now. With their commitments in place, it’s still fantastic to see their passion and talent for performing and an annual basis makes the most sense. Dozens of fans shouted back every word and the group stayed at the venue until 2:30 in the morning to talk with each and every fan that wanted to.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard Garret deliver some new vocals – the last time was in a feature on the stellar Galleons record in 2021. Since then, Garret has posted some teasers on his Facebook and it’s evident that the band is aching to get some more tunes out. The last release, a series of covers in Artist Inspiration Series, marked the most recent offering in 2017. As the pandemic began in 2020, the band also mentioned they were writing for their sixth album, but understandably, were radio silent up until the June 2023 performance and a cancelled Blue Ridge Rock Fest appearance.

Make no mistake, The Color Morale haven’t hung it up yet – and they might never. With drummer Steve being a part of Senses Fail, guitarist Devin touring with Wage War, guitarist Aaron being a successful tattoo artist, bassist Mike being a family man, and Garret pursuing his love of motocross and graphic design, the five found their time to make it work on January 13th and it’s surely not the last we’ll see of them. The Color Morale are back, and it looks like the only people more stoked for the return than the fans are the band themselves.

KAMELOT‘s latest album, The Awakening, debuted at #2 on the US Current Hard Music Albums chart and #27 on the Current Album Sales chart, and connected with fans and critics alike – touted by many as the best late-era KAMELOT release to date! The album enters the band’s legacy as their most massive and diverse offering yet – mixing symphonic, gothic, melodic, progressive and power metal styles while yielding some of the heaviest tracks in the band’s history. Having reigned supreme with the release of internationally top-charting melodic metal pinnacles such as The Fourth Legacy (1999), The Black Halo (2005), Silverthorn (2012), Haven (2015, #1 US Hard Rock Albums), and most recently 2018’s acclaimed The Shadow Theory (#2 US Hard Music Albums), KAMELOT’s intense brand of ultramodern gothic and symphonic theatricality is amplified further and with more emotionality than ever on The Awakening.

Showcasing the incomparable, stage-seasoned vocal acrobatics of Tommy Karevik and increasingly airtight, renowned technical teamwork of guitarist Thomas Youngblood, drummer Alex Landenburg, keyboardist Oliver Palotai and bassist Sean Tibbetts, KAMELOT’s score-like 13th studio album is accented by guest contributions from the likes of Melissa Bonny (Ad Infinitum) and renowned instrumentalists like violinist Florian Janoske and cellist Tina Guo. The Awakening features crystal clear modern production helmed by the band and longtime producer Sascha Paeth, plus mixing and mastering by Jacob Hansen of Hansen Studios.

Enter Shikari and Fever 333 lead singer Jason Butler have released their new collaborative single ‘Losing My Grip‘ today. The track marks the first new music from Enter Shikari in 2024, following the band’s biggest year to date which included the release of their first ever UK #1 album A Kiss for the Whole World and the announcement of a huge world tour. Enter Shikari “Losing My Grip” (ft. Jason Aalon Butler)

Linking up with long-time friend and upcoming tour mate Jason Butler (Fever 333), Losing My Grip‘ is a characteristically inquisitive and probing single that beats its chest and locks eyes with a world spinning out of control. It again showcases the collaborative talents of a band that in the last year alone have worked on singles with AViVACody Frost, WARGASM and You Me At Six.

Talking about their new single, lead singer and producer Rou Reynolds says:

“We’ve known [Fever 333 lead singer] Jason for years now and have toured much of the world together. I think we always thought that it’d be great to collaborate on something when the right opportunity surfaced.

This track certainly felt right. It required a thoughtful intensity, which Jason provides effortlessly in whatever he sets his mind to.

We can’t wait to take Fever 333 out on our UK and Europe tour, it’s been too long since we shared a stage together.

Losing My Grip oscillates between two of our favourite and foundational genre influences; Drum and Bass and hardcore punk.

Lyrically, it’s about the immense power that our species now wields, and the pressure and weight that that adds to our lives. We’re the only species capable of destroying itself (and all others) completely and, increasingly, it appears as though we’re only too willing. Losing My Grip is about the fight to stay sane whilst living in a deeply and dangerously flawed system.”

Fever 333 lead singer Jason Butler adds:

“I’ve always been a fan of Enter Shikari. Yes, them as a band, but moreover, them as people. Yes, what they do, but even more so how they do it. They are an entity in their own lane and I’m honoured to have had an opportunity to swerve in it for a second and very excited to be rockin’ with them on this upcoming tour. WE ARE GODS.”

AMARANTHE Release New Single “Re-Vision” from Upcoming Album ‘The Catalyst’

Two weeks into the new year, AMARANTHE, one of Sweden’s most influential modern metal bands, kicks off 2024 with the crushing pop metal song ‘Re-Vision.’ With its electronic pulse, powerful riffs, and irresistibly lethal hooks in the chorus, the song demonstrates why AMARANTHE are one of the most unique acts in modern metal.

AMARANTHE‘s Olof Mörck states:
“It is time for the fourth single from The Catalyst‘Re-Vision’, and this time we went all in. Ponderous cyberpunk and synth wave rhythms clash with AMARANTHE’s signature sound in an equally thrilling and memorable blend, sure to act as a permanent cybernetic implant into your brain. The prodigious video, once again actualized by long-time collaborator Patric Ullaeus, serves as the perfect counterpoint to ‘Re-Vision’, more ambitious and explosive than any AMARANTHE video to date! As predictions from the 80’s Artificial Intelligence seem to become truer every day, we are ready to serve you a cataclysmic yet captivating foresight into the future of AMARANTHE: Re-Visioned.”

‘Re-Vision’ is the fourth single from AMARANTHE‘s forthcoming album The Catalyst, that will see the light of the day on February 23rd, 2024, via Nuclear Blast Records. The album will be available digitally and in different physical formats including CD, Vinyl, a 2CD Special Edition, and a band-exclusive Vinyl that will come with a signed poster. The Catalyst is the most conceptually coherent piece of work in AMARANTHE’s storied history. Dedicated to notions of transformation and revelation, it delves deeper than any previous album, as Olof Mörck explains.

“We’ve done these things before, but we’ve never been as theatrical as we have this time,” Mörck grins. “In fact, we all questioned whether we went too far this time, but I also figured that this band was always this way. Literally, the first seconds of our first video was a big explosion! But yes, The Catalyst is more theatrical than ever. We’ve never really been symphonic or orchestral before, but this time we just thought why not? Because we can! The key to this album is that we let go of the boundaries and decided to do something even more adventurous.”

The Catalyst represents the culmination of 15 years of hard work and the breathless pursuit of a wholly original musical vision. Change is inevitable. Victory is assured.

*AMARANTHE Headline Show

Formed in 2008, AMARANTHE walked their own unique path from the start. With a sound that combined the sharpest, cutting edges of melodic metal, electronic rock, and razor-sharp pop, their impact was immediate and undeniable. Kicking off with their self-titled debut in 2011, the Swedes blazed a trail through the European metal scene and beyond, swiftly establishing themselves as a dazzling one-off, not least due to the unprecedented triple vocal attack that paired clean tones with exquisite melodic sensibilities and feral growls. Over the next few years, the sextet steadily grew in stature, releasing a series of praised studio records that jabbed persistently at the boundaries of modern metal.
