^ The Used and Amira Elfeky only

Stoked to be touring with some of our oldest friends in the industry,” says The Used vocalist Bert McCracken. “We’ve always been huge fans of Big Blue Monkey! Can’t wait to see Amira Elfeky live as well!!!

The Used have been big brothers to Story Of The Year for over 20 years,” continues Story Of The Year frontman Dan Marsala. “They were the one of first bands to take us on tour after we finished ‘Page Avenue’ and they played a big part in SOTY becoming the band we are today. I’ve always admired how The Used were the fearless leaders of our early 2000s scene and I’m so proud of the friendship that we built so many years ago. The Used and Story Of The Year… that just sounds right!”

Last year, The Used released their newest album, Toxic Positivity. Described as a “day-in-the-life journey of a depressed, anxiety-ridden person” by McCracken, the tell-all record shares the highs and lows of depression and addiction through a cohesive body of work, speaking to the ever-changing headspace that he was experiencing at the time of writing. “This record is quite tough for me to listen to,” he adds, “because it’s a reflection of times in my life that have been some of my lowest ever.”

Fans can stream Toxic Positivity now at https://theused.ffm.to/toxicpositivity

Story Of The Year released their most recent album Tear Me To Pieces in 2023 via SharpTone Records. Featuring eleven new tracks – including previous singles “Real Life,” “Tear Me To Pieces,” “Take The Ride,” “War,” and “2005” – the new album is distinctly, invitingly, loudly Story Of The Year. Heartache, desperation, motivation, toxic relationships, pain, loss, anger – all of the essential ingredients of the classic Story Of The Year sound propel Tear Me to Pieces in dazzling new ways.

Additionally, Northlane will drop their forthcoming EP, Mirror’s Edge, on April 12. Mirror’s Edge was recorded with their old friend and revered producer Will Putney. Described by Jon Deiley (songwriter/guitarist) as “the greatest hits of Northlane sounds,” the EP is a nostalgic journey through all the colors on their sonic palette, with bonus shades from special guests Winston McCall (Parkway Drive) and Ian Kenny (Karnivool/Birds of Tokyo) — two of the most influential artists in Northlane’s history. Their former bass player, Brendon Padjasek, also stopped by the studio to lend his scream to one of the tracks. Penned just over a year after the release of their award-winning album, Obsidian, the road to Mirror’s Edge was a bumpy one. Instead of riding high from the success of the album, the simmering tension and communication breakdown between band members threatened to engulf Northlane at any moment. Northlane tackled their issues head-on at a writing retreat in Victoria’s Yarra Valley, where they worked through their problems and unlocked new channels of creativity in the process that reflects through the EP. From the expansive prog of “Afterimage” to their signature bottom-heavy groove and viscous breakdown of “Kraft” and compulsive beat and electronic focus of “Dante,” Mirror’s Edge is full of Northlane’s most vivid colours and textures.  Thematically, the EP is about looking at yourself and reflecting on the past one final time before leaving it all behind to find hope in what lies beyond the mirror’s edge. With the recurring theme of acceptance binding these songs together, frontman Marcus Bridge is hopeful that Mirror’s Edge will be the coda on this part of his personal life, so much of which he has shared in the last couple of Northlane releases.

The Gaslight Anthem Announce New EP & Tour Dates

The Gaslight Anthem

The Gaslight Anthem has announced HISTORY BOOKS – SHORT STORIES, a new EP arriving Friday, March 22 on their own Rich Mahogany Recordings label via Thirty Tigers.

HISTORY BOOKS – SHORT STORIES collects four exclusive tracks including the band’s anthemic take on Billie Eilish’s 3x RIAA Platinum-certified breakthrough single, “Ocean Eyes,” as well as a brand new rendition of the longtime fan favorite, “Blue Jeans & White T-Shirts,” and stripped-down acoustic performances of “Positive Charge” and “History Books,” the original versions of which can be found on The Gaslight Anthem’s acclaimed 2023 return to action, HISTORY BOOKS.

“I was driving my daughter to school and she played it for me on the way and I really took to the song,” says The Gaslight Anthem’s Brian Fallon. “Then one day we were talking ideas for a cover with our friends and I said, wouldn’t it be cool to do a heavier version of ‘Ocean Eyes’? I tried it out and everybody loved the idea.”

The Gaslight Anthem will celebrate HISTORY BOOKS – SHORT STORIES and much more with an eagerly awaited North American summer headline tour. The “HISTORY BOOKS TOUR” gets underway July 26 at Denver, CO’s Mission Ballroom and then continues through a September 1 finale at Detroit, MI’s The Fillmore Detroit. HEALTH Bring The Noise and Darkness to Richmond, VA

Take angry industrial with endless strobe lights and noise. Then take the most serene, atmospheric music you can think of. Now make both styles seamlessly integrate. That was what Health presented at The National in Richmond, VA.

Promoting the band’s latest album RAT WARS, Health have excelled with creating a unique audience and fanbase. The turnout in Richmond brought industrial fans and gamers to the floor. For a crowd that was mostly stoic and swaying through the evening, a pit eventually broke open during the openings tracks of Health’s set. This was an almost completely black-wearing audience who reveled in the bass filled groove of the 70-minute set.

RAT WARS was a late contender for album of the year entries across many 2023 lists. With the many collaborations on the album as well as the bold creativity and electronic design, it became a last minute gem for my year as well. Several songs from the new album were performed at The National, including “DEMIGODS” which you can find the video for below.

This was my first time seeing Health live. Before the set started, Randy Blythe from Lamb Of God showed up in the photo pit to take photos of the performance. Blythe, who also performed with Health on the band’s latest release, said he too was excited to see Health live for the first time.

It’s also worth pointing out that Health have some extreme merchandise for sale at every show. I would have taken a photo to show the different options, but then I found out that the band has done the good business practice of showing the merch themselves through social media. You can check out the filthy t-shirts along with photos and footage from Health’s set below.

10 GREAT 2000’s Emo Albums!

Supporting HEALTH on tour is Chicago’s Pixel Grip. This was a group that I was completely unfamiliar with until last night. What I noticed was a strong vocalist with the slightest bit of attitude and strong personality. All of which is meant as a compliment. The music relished in digital beats paired with crash drumming. This was dark wave filled with hooks and the vibe was appropriate as an opener for Health.

At one point near the end of Pixel Grip’s set, singer Rita Lukea warned the crowd if they didn’t start turning up that she would come out there and show them what’s up. Lukea lived up to her word and clambered past the photo pit and past the barricade. After finishing her section of the song on the floor, she returned to stage saying “I warned you.”

Pixel Grip “ALPHAPUSSY” (Live at Metro Music Hall)

This was a fun evening. Rat-Based Warfare may sound like a nightmare on paper, but the music made sure it was great. You can check out more from each band at their respective socials: Health | Pixel Grip

VENDED tell us:

“‘The Far Side’ shows another side of VENDED that hasn’t been seen before. The focus of this song was pushing our boundaries and abilities to the limit. ‘The Far Side’ represents a new era of the band; a new level of aggression and rawness.

It was recorded live in the studio, nothing but raw power and pure energy in the room. It fully encapsulates the intensity you would hear in a live setting. Whether you’re seeing us in a club or an arena, the energy you hear live was put directly into this record

Vended “The Far Side”

‘The Far Side’ follows the release of previous single, ‘Am I The Only One’. the video for which has now racked up over half a million views on YouTube.

The hotly tipped 5-piece’s debut EP, ‘What Is It / Kill It’, arrived at DSPs in late 2021, garnering international critical acclaim. The following touring cycle saw the band open the day’s proceedings at the massive KNOTFEST LOS ANGELES event at Banc Of California Stadium, playing alongside SLIPKNOT, BRING ME THE HORIZON, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, FEVER 333, CODE ORANGE and CHERRY BOMBS. The band then went on to charm European stages across the Summer of 2022, including Bloodstock Festival in the UK, where they shot their live video for ‘Ded To Me’.

More recently, VENDED won Nik Nocturnal’s award for ‘Breakthrough Band Of The Year’, marking a colossally successful 2023 in triumphant style.

Congress VS Spotify: A Bill To Help Musicians Survive

Members of Congress have presented the Living Wage for Musicians Act to help combat low streaming payouts from Spotify, who made $3.7 Billion profit in 2023. Congress VS Spotify: A Bill To Help Musicians Survive.

Congress VS Spotify: A Bill To Help Musicians Survive

“A new bill designed to increase streaming payouts for artists was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday (Mar. 6). Titled the Living Wage for Musicians Act, the legislation proposes the establishment of a new royalty fund that would pay artists directly, bypassing labels altogether. Introduced by Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) and Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.), the bill aims to boost artists’ streaming royalty from fractions of a penny up to one penny per stream by way of the new fund. It proposes to fund the additional royalty payments, in part, by mandating the addition of a fee to every streaming subscription equal to 50% of the subscription price — an amount that would be set anywhere between $4 and $10. The bill would also establish a royalty cap for tracks that generate at least 1 million streams per month, with royalties generated by the tracks beyond that number to be divided among all artists.” (Steve Knopper, Billboard

DSPs like Spotify offering interactive music streaming services would pass their taxed revenues and royalties to a non-profit collection and distribution fund, that would in turn pay artists in proportion to their monthly streams. Judas Priest – Invincible Shield | Album Review

Over 50 years in as a band, and this album proves Judas Priest has no intention of slowing down. The song writing and execution is on par with the excellent 2018 Firepower. The guitarwork naturally steals the show in many tracks. Some of the solos are elongated and the album benefits from that as a whole. Invincible Shield is a guitar-lover’s album. You’ll be air-guitaring on first listen. The title track and “Panic Attack” have great energy while a song like “Gates Of Hell” is classic rock in 2024. The plodding, sinister tracks that slow the pace down also have their place. It’s Judas Priest, they can do anything. In an interview Halford said “When you’ve cheated death, it changes your outlook on life.” Not only did Rob cheat death, his voice didn’t show any age on Invincible Shield. 8/10

Released in 2024, this album showcases Judas Priest’s ability to rock harder and faster than ever before, proving that age is no barrier to delivering exceptional heavy metal music. Nevertel release new single, “Sacrifice”

Nevertel, the Tampa-based rock/R&B quartet, has released their newest single, “Sacrifice”, after some mysterious, enticing teases the week following up to it.

Nevertel has made huge waves the past few years, elevating their sound to reach a staggering half-a-million monthly listeners on Spotify, getting plays on SiriusXM’s Octane Test Drive, and even performing at Florida’s Rockville 2023. Off the success of recent singles “Far Away” and “Modified”, “Sacrifice” is another triumph in songwriting and execution for the group. It’s another example of what embodies Nevertel and sets them apart from the pack: an earworm chorus that sticks like glue in your head, deeply-relatable lyricism, and an ample offering of heaviness before it’s all over.

The duality of vocalists Jeremy Michael and Raul Lopez are felt across both verses, whereas the band holds the melody and shines in “Sacrifice”s breakdown. It also goes without saying that the signature production, done in conjunction with Raul and Kenny Garcia, puts it right at the top of quality alongside current genre staples. It’s that high mark of quality that lets every Nevertel single make an impression on the ever-growing fanbase.

As Nevertel has been turning heads with the surge in listens of 2018 single “No Reverse”, it’s been a slow-but-steady rise that’s been well-deserved from the four-piece that’s been grinding away for almost a decade now. Subverting the status-quo of groups that adhere to a blueprint, Nevertel just has an it-factor thanks to meticulous songwriting and fine-tuning their sound to perfection. “Sacrifice” solidifies what makes them stand out, while honing in on the winning formula of a massive chorus to make it exceptionally replayable.

Nevertel has teased a huge 2024, and this is as strong a start as any for a band that is finally getting its flowers. Here’s hoping for more shows, more tunes, and just more Nevertel this year. For now, check out “Sacrifice” and try not to get it too stuck in your head.
