Fever 333 Burn The Temple Down | Photos | Sonic Temple 2019

It was after Jason Aalon Butler took a 100+ ft microphone cable to extend into the seats surrounding MAPFRE stadium that the attendees in Sonic Temple realized Fever 333 was not an ordinary band.

Political statements, taking a stand and making sure everyone’s voices are heard are qualities of this supergroup. Making a point to acknowledge everyone’s similarities instead of their differences was a specific message between songs that brought everyone together.

Seeing this band live will definitely catch you off guard if you aren’t prepared. At one point, Jason lifted the rug covering the main stage and climbed under it while singing and jumping. As if he was a rap-rock puppy playing with everyone watching him. It was intense AND adorable.

It’s been a wild year for the California supergroup. This includes a Grammy nomination, the release of the debut album Strength In Numb333rs, and now being nominated for Best Song with “Burn It” by Kererang. This band has accomplished a lot in a short amount of time. See their live demonstration once and you’ll understand that they’ve earned their accolades.

Setlist:
Burn It
We’re Coming In
Made An America
One Of Us
Drum Circle
The Innocent

I will never get tired of seeing Lamb Of God live. Their sound might scare the elderly away (and enrage sweet grandmothers who accidently bought their albums thinking it was good church music), but Richmond’s metal band knows how to demand attention.

Earlier in the day, Randy Blythe made a surprise appearance to sing with Gojira. That was a warm up as Blythe and company enraged the temple grounds at MAPFRE Stadium.

It was during “Walk With Me In Hell” that crowd surfers started flying into the photo pit. The scene was reminiscent of an earth quake with people moving and falling over while trying to focus on the stage.

Mark Morton is also having a great year with the release of his solo album Anesthetic. Needless to say the fire is lit within the band and they still know how to deliver live. We’ve heard rumors that the band will be releasing new music soon. Here’s hoping that comes to fruition.

Setlist:
Omerta
Ruin
Walk With Me In Hell
Now You’ve Got Something To Die For
512
Enrage The Fear Machine
Blacken The Cursed Sun
Descending
Laid To Rest
Redneck

Shvpes Welcome Everyone To The Temple | Photos | Sonic Temple 2019

Photos of Shvpes at Sonic Temple.

in Columbus, OH on May 17th, 2019.

In the early afternoon on day one of Sonic Temple, Shvpes helped welcome everyone on the temple grounds. This is a band that is now getting consistent airplay on SiriusXM and although there is a relation to metal royalty, it sounds like these Brits are carving their own identity.

This was my first time seeing this group perform live and I’m starting to understand why they are gaining a following. They have a unique sound with good melodies in both guitar and vocals. It’s not the same strum and riff band that is plaguing rock radio.

This was the type of performance that made me want to hear more of the band. Shvpes latest album Greater Than is supporting several singles and paired with the live performance, it’s hard to ignore the effort they are putting in.

Shvpes will be heading back to EU/UK to perform festivals there. You can keep up to date with the band on their Facebook page here: Shvpes on Facebook

Parkway Drive Celebrate A Year Of Reverence | Photos | Sonic Temple 2019

Photos of Parkway Drive at Sonic Temple.
All photos taken by Luke Spencer
in Columbus, OH on May 18th, 2019.

This was the second time I had seen Parkway Drive live. Just about everyone who had seen them live told me that their festival performances are much bigger and better than their concert shows.

After seeing the band perform at Sonic Temple, it sank in for me. McCall and company sounded amazing and incited a riot at the main stage. It was a hot day in Columbus but no one seemed to care as crowd surfers took flight while Winston McCall screamed at them.

It has been one year since Reverence came out and after many international tours, Australia’s metal heroes are still riding that wave. The band has wrapped up an extended EU/UK tour and here’s hoping we will hear new music from them soon.

Setlist:
Wishing Wells
Prey
Vice Grip
The Void
Shadow Boxing
Wild Eyes
Crushed
Bottom Feeder

In This Moment Perform Their Temple Ritual | Photos | Sonic Temple 2019

Photos of In This Moment at Sonic Temple.
All photos taken by Luke Spencer
in Columbus, OH on May 18th, 2019.

Earlier this month was the news that In This Moment would be releasing Mother in fall of 2019. Advertisements were spread throughout the Sonic Temple grounds at MAPFRE Staidum to hype the mystery surrounding Mother.

The album cycle for In This Moment’s previous album Ritual has gone long and successful. Along with this, the band has reinvented and created new stage designs to make their live show unique. Seeing the new black cutout “Nightmare Before Christmas” set worked great and added to their appearance with the purple video background behind them.

We know that In This Moment usually includes one cover song per album and at Sonic Temple they performed a dooming rendition of “Fly Like An Eagle” by Steve Miller Band. Whether this song will be on Mother or not, it’s clear that In This Moment know how to take something wildly out of the rock scene and make it work for themselves.

Setlist:
Fly Like An Eagle (Cover)
River Of Fire
Natural Born Sinner
Big Bad Wolf
Blood

In This Moment will be joining the Evolution tour with Disturbed later this year. You can find upcoming tour dates on their Facebook page here: In This Moment on Facebook

Halestorm Shred At The Temple | Photos | Sonic Temple 2019

Photos of Halestorm at Sonic Temple.
All photos taken by Luke Spencer
in Columbus, OH on May 17th, 2019.

What I love about seeing Halestorm live is looking at the crowd and seeing how impressed they are while watching. The discography and biggest songs do not do justice on how good of a show this band delivers.

In the first few minutes, Halestorm’s biggest fan at Sonic Temple was brought on stage and handed one of Lzzy’s custom guitars. After that, Lzzy was throwing out cardboard hotel keys while performing “Do Not Disturbed”. Each song became more of a jam session where Lzzy and Joe shredded repeatedly through the remainder of the set.

From the opening drum solo by Arejay and “Freak Like Me” to the closing of “I Miss The Misery”, Halestorm earned new fans at Sonic Temple on the main stage.

There is something in Halestorm’s live sound that can’t be captured on the band’s past albums. If ever there was a group that needed a live album released, it should be Halestorm. Hopefully we hear a new one soon because they have something special when they are in front of a crowd.

Setlist:
Freak Like Me
Love Bites (So Do I)
Do Not Disturb
Amen
I Get Off
Chemicals
Uncomfortable
I Miss The Misery

Halestorm will be going on tour with Alice Cooper later this summer. You can find upcoming tour dates on their Facebook page here: Halestorm on Facebook

Russian Circles Announce New Album & North American Tour

Russian Circles Announce Their New Album, ‘Blood Year,’ & North American Tour

Russian Circles image
Russian Circles

“Russian Circles have made great use of post-rock most familiar’s dynamic tricks—loud and quiet; stop and start, swell and subside. But they’ve never had qualms about splicing elements of everything from metal and noise-rock to krautrock and post-hardcore into their darkly dramatic, instrumental compositions.” – Pitchfork

There are few things one can be sure of these days, though one truism that remains is that Russian Circles will continue to reign as one of instrumental music’s supreme champions.

These masters of sonic tension and release plan to deliver their seventh studio album August 2nd on Sargent House. Dubbed Blood Year, the LP is less a musical exploration and more a statement of authority, lest there be any doubt that Russian Circles remain a force to be reckoned with on the stage and in the studio.

Russian Circles – “Arluck”

The Chicago trio have always explored the dynamics of volume and timbre, with their albums often vacillating between caustic attacks and blissful respites. Russian Circles returned to the studio with Kurt Ballou to record Blood Year, but this time they tracked it in Chicago at Steve Albini’s world-famous Electrical Audio.

From guitarist Mike Sullivan’s riff-fueled assaults, to Dave Turncrantz’s war machine rack and floor toms and Brian Cook’s meat grinding bass lines, the sound of Blood Year is that of a band unafraid to flaunt their hard-earned prowess.

Sullivan, Turncrantz, and Cook made a conscious effort to approach the songs on Blood Year with the same organic feel of a live show. In an age where rock records are often built on a computerized grid, Russian Circles chose to track the foundations of the songs together in one room as complete takes without click tracks. The human pulse and unmetered energy is woven throughout Blood Year, a presence that can be felt with each bone-rattling minute.

Blood Year will be released via Sargent House on August 2 and Russian Circles will be on tour in North America this September, October and November in support of it.  FACS and Windhand will appear on select dates — check out all tour dates listed below.
