Greyhaven – Stereo Grief | EP Review

The 2020s have seen something of a new coming from the side of metal that leans towards chaos and discord. Whether it’s Better Lovers nabbing nonstop festival spots straight after their inception, The Callous Daoboys paving their way into international tours, or even Dillinger Escape Plan reuniting for a 25-year Calculating Infinity celebration, it’s a joy to see the experimental/mathy exploits of this sect of -core bear such fruit.

Amongst this resurgence is Greyhaven, a sonically-charged group that’s impressed with records This Bright and Beautiful World and Empty Black over the last 6 years. Even if they’ve left my rotation here and there, this four-piece eventually makes their way back and I never regret picking them up again. Now off the heels of signing to Solid State Records, the group has teamed up with best-in-the-biz Will Putney and Stereo Grief is out – does it stack up with the rest of their discography?

As Greyhaven bursts out of the gate with the lyric “All I want right now is death” in “Past Material”, it’s more than clear Stereo Grief is an EP out for blood. The rumble of double-bass throughout the verses complements the panic chords and vitriol within vocalist Brent Mills’ words. When the band isn’t gut-punching the listener with these distraught runs, the gritty melodic choruses in tracks like “Confined Collapse” are enough to elicit mic-grabbing moments at any Greyhaven show on their upcoming shows with Better Lovers, SeeYouSpaceCowboy, and Foreign Hands.

Lead single “The Welcome Party” best represents the unique approach Greyhaven brings to this side of heavy music. Tempo-changes abound and guitar leads showcased, it’s some of the best of what the band has to offer and is turning heads across the scene on a stacked April 12th release day. The follow-up in “Sick and Lavish” broadcasts in its second verse just how well Greyhaven can flip a switch from intense frenzy to prime-focused post-hardcore like it’s nothing. Everything in Stereo Grief comes to a head in closer “An Inverse Self-Reflection”, as Mills shares: “The prior four tunes are dark and negative. This wraps up on a positive note. You realize, ‘Everything was bad, but I have the ability to make things better. It’s up to me.’ The house swallows you up, but it’s over and you can take the wisdom and make a change. That’s the whole message.”

It took a few listens and focusing on the lyricism for me to realize Stereo Grief is actually a concept EP. Mills mentions, “On the EP, this character is traveling through a house where he watches all of these versions of himself. He experiences good and bad moments as well as regret.” This projected introspection really adds something to the listen; an already sonically-compelling instrumental is bolstered with this involved character study across eighteen minutes. That merit makes up for each song feeling a bit indiscernible from each other – a nitpick if anything, as Greyhaven has crafted a replayable, worthwhile EP in Stereo Grief.

Eidola – Eviscerate | Album Review

Fifth full album from Utah’s proggy, post-hardcore, fill in the genre Eidola that opens up huge in the first half of this album. The first half of Eviscerate is a freight train. Well timed speed changes, great back and forth between singers, the post-hardcore elements all shine. The second half is where the album runs out of steam and it resembles another metalcore album. You’ll hear glimpses of creativity in songs like “Kali Yuga”, but most of the album banks on stock chugs and unchanging volume. This is a band that has plenty of potential and creativity and Eviscerate shows that off in some tracks like “No Weapon Formed Shall Prosper” and “A Bridge Of Iron And Blood”. There is good stuff on Eidola’s latest. The biggest problem is that between filler and material we’ve heard from many other groups, Eidola doesn’t so much Eviscerate throughout the album, but rather barely papercut. 6/10.

“Eidola, the alternative metal band fronted by Chris Volz of the nu-metal group Flaw, has recently signed with Eclipse Records and announced the release of their new album “Darkness” on January 05th, 2024. The band, which also features bassist Weed, guitarist E.T., and drummer Tosha Jones, originally met with Eclipse Records in 2019 and have been working towards this partnership for several years. The first single from the album, “Whiskey”, is set to be released on October 07th, 2023. Eidola is excited to work with the Eclipse Records team to bring their “alien hard rock music to the masses”. Fans of Flaw and alternative metal can look forward to the release of “Darkness” and the opportunity to hear Chris Volz’s powerful vocals on this new project.” (Perplexity)

Eidola Eviscerate Album Review

Dethklok Slaughter Maryland with Dragonforce and Nekrogoblikon

With the Army Of The Doomstar arriving last fall, Dethklok are continuing their return to slaughtering, this time bringing Dragonforce and Nekrogoblikon. Seeing the end of Metalocalypse in a true fashion last year brought a satisfying conclusion to an amazing concept and act that was Dethklok. Hearing Brendon Small and company take stage and give live to a range of songs from the four album discography and TV soundtracks confirmed that Dethklok’s music is not gone. If anything, it’s more appreciated than ever.

The Filmore was beyond crowded. To describe the venue as having people spill out into the hall and sidewalk would only paint part of the picture as the sold-out building was filled with fans wanting to praise Metalocalypse. Oversold? Possibly. Satisfied? Definitely.

Dethalbum IV released in Fall 2023 and was an honorable mention on our Top 10 BEST Albums of 2023. Hearing some of the new songs like “Aortic Desecration” is somehow more impressive than the studio performance, and matches up with long running material from Dethalbum and Dethalbum II. The sardine-packed crowd knew every song from what I could tell. Night three of The Mutilation On A Spring Night Tour 2024 was less of a metal concert and more of a reunion for metal fans to have fun while Nathan Explosion sings about blood and death.

Dethklok “Aortic Desecration”

Supporting Dethklok on their 2024 leg is power metal and nerd heroes Dragonforce, fresh off the release of Warp Speed Warriors which arrived earlier this year. Surrounded by dual video game cabinets and getting the crowd to chant FUS ROH DAH between songs, it was clear Dragonforce knew their audience. It’s nice to hear a band embrace what makes them happy WHILE making sure the audience gets what they expect. Throwing a stuffed animal chicken around during a song dedicated to Zelda and the Triforce was not expected (or at least not by me).

This was my second time seeing Dragonforce live, and first in a concert venue. In every way, Dragonforce relished in participation with the crowd and having fun with the music. Metal doesn’t have to be funeral-serious at all times. You can enjoy performing and go wild singing about fantasy characters.

Dragonforce “Burning Heart”

Nekrogoblikon opened The Filmore with screaming and an attempt to make fun of the town. The issue was that according to the head goblin, “This is normally where we would make fun of the town but I don’t know anything about Silver Spring. I don’t think anyone does.” The Filmore and Silver Spring, MD escaped scorn due to not being known in goblin geography.

KNOCKED LOOSE Release New Single “Don’t Reach For Me”

Knocked Loose unleash their seething, experimental new single “Don’t Reach For Me,” a track that combines the band’s signature frenzied attack with deliberate catchiness and exhilarating sonic variety. After one listen, the song’s refrain — “I dream of a cleansing wave,” roared out by frontman Bryan Garris in his patented piercing, rueful bark — loops in the listener’s mind like a prime earworm, setting the stage for future live shout-alongs. Lyrically, Garris says, the track “may be the meanest song I’ve ever written,” a seismic takedown of “someone who tried their hardest to come into my life and mess with two out of the three closest people I have.” “Don’t Reach For Me” is available today alongside an arresting video directed and produced by Max Moore.

On You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To, Knocked Loose have honed in on a diverse, cohesive and savagely aggressive album that sums up the massive strides they’ve taken during their decade as a band, and asserts their boundless potential going forward. Internally, there was the need to challenge themselves as songwriters while retaining the merciless intensity and unflinching honesty that have always been their calling cards. Externally, there was a whole new set of eyes on the hard-touring Louisville quintet, following a banner year on the road, during which they’d brought their underground-seasoned sound to some of the world’s biggest stages.

From the start, You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To plunges listeners into a cauldron of mental and spiritual anguish. But the album’s title contains a note of reassurance amid the turmoil. The phrase originates from an experience that Garris, who suffers from what he calls a “borderline phobia of flying,” had during a particularly trying flight. As he battled his nerves during takeoff, the vocalist found himself talking to a woman seated next to him. When he confided in her about his anxiety, she assured, “You won’t go before you’re supposed to.”

But glossing over negative emotions isn’t what Knocked Loose are about. The new songs find them plumbing through new depths of loathing — directed both inward and outward. Across 10 tracks and 27 gripping minutes, You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To leans into Knocked Loose’s most extreme impulses, from blastbeat-driven fury, chaotic turbulence and seismic breakdowns, while seasoning the mix with ear-catching auxiliary percussion, evocative samples and shout-along hooks, all interwoven to perfection by Grammy-nominated, pop-savy producer Drew “WZRD BLD” Fulk.

You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To is filled with boundary-pushing textures and samples the band has collected over the years. On “Suffocate,” Garris teams up with pop-meets-metal trailblazer Poppy, for an effort that contrasts an oppressive heaviness befitting the title with a dance-y, syncopated groove and the most concussive reggaeton rhythm you’ve ever heard. Samples of what sounds like meditative singing bowls open the album to “Take Me Home,” with its spoken-word intro, ear-catching auxiliary percussion and brief yet evocative concluding country-song snippet. Elements like these only make the breakneck blur of a track like “Moss Covers All,” a song that Garris says deals with his ever-present longing for the comfort of home, feel that much more urgent.

“On this album, we go the fastest we’ve ever gone; we go the scariest we’ve ever gone. We also go the catchiest and the most melodic that we’ve ever gone, and that’s the point,” guitarist Isaac Hale says. “Instead of branching off into a specific direction, we want to encompass ALL directions.”

There’s no ceiling for hardcore in 2024 — even an outfit as uncompromising as Knocked Loose can turn up in mainstream-adjacent spaces and win over new fans (see 2023’s viral Coachella and Bonnaroo sets). But there’s a center to what they do that will never change: uncompromising heaviness, both sonically and thematically. What is evolving is their drive to find new ways to convey that heaviness, and add tasteful variety that only highlights their undiminished ferocity. Everywhere Knocked Loose have been is here on this record — but so is everywhere they may yet go.

Knocked Loose’s headlining North American tour kicks off with a performance at Sick New World in Las Vegas later this month. The run hits both coasts and includes two sold out nights in New York City at Brooklyn Steel and Terminal 5 plus sold out shows at Austin’s Stubbs Amphitheater, The Shrine in Los Angeles and more. The Barbarians of California Share “Where Are the Punks”

The West Coast’s contribution to hardcore punk is undeniable. That tradition of aggression, passion, and scrappy melodicism continues with The Barbarians Of California, an engaging new manifestation of iconoclastic spirit and true bombast. They are equal opportunity iconoclasts, gleefully thrashing the left and the right in the hardcore-punk tradition of nonconformity and raw fury. The band isn’t “political,” because they aren’t advocating for anyone’s platform. The central message is defiance.

“Where Are the Punks’ is about being disappointed when you find out your childhood heroes are no longer rebellious,” the band explains. “Everyone has the tendency to soften as their age. We are fighting against that in this song. This was one of the first song the band started working on for this project. Eric lead crafting the instrumentals and the lyrics were inspired by Aaron’s college professor telling him to question authority.”

So, who, exactly, are The Barbarians of California?

You’ll be glad you asked.

Eric Stenman and Aaron Bruno first collided in the California hardcore scene of the early ’90s. Stenman cut his teeth in the same Sacramento community that eventually launched diverse and disparate acts like Deftones, Far, Will Haven, Team Sleep, Hella, Dance Gavin Dance, Death Grips, and Trash Talk. Bruno was born and raised just north of L.A. and nicknamed “AWOL” by his high school friends. Eric played guitar for cutting-edge, electro-infused rockers Tinfed. Commercial success eluded them despite a cult following, a deal with a major label, and an appearance on the M:I 2 soundtrack.

Bruno co-founded the hardcore band Insurgence as a teenager. His next band, Home Town Hero, toured with Weezer and Stone Temple Pilots and released a major label album, but combusted in 2004. Next came Under The Influence Of Giants, who, despite critical acclaim, disbanded in 2008. Stenman became one of the most sought-after producers of alternative rock. His discography as a producer, mixer, and engineer includes important releases from 7 Seconds, Senses Fail, ††† (Crosses), and AWOLNATION. AWOLNATION, of course, is the multi-platinum act Bruno formed in 2009.

The spirit of the underground and the personal catharsis delivered through metallic hardcore never left either of them. So, when Aaron learned that Eric crafted a batch of throwback bangers combining impassioned angst with modern sensibilities, he wanted in immediately. The Barbarians were born.

The apparent “full circle” moment isn’t lost on either of them. “It’s a funny time in our lives to go back and make the most aggressive music we’ve ever created,” Stenman laughs. “Both of us have always had a love for this world. If given the opportunity, why not try to give back to it?”

Is For Lovers Festival 2024 Announces Line-Ups

Is For Lovers Festival, the North American touring festival that celebrates the vibrant spirit and culture of punk and emo, has unveiled the bands playing the beloved Summer outing, with 2024 featuring a mix of longtime favorites and newly discovered up-and-comers.

Yellowcard, Underoath, Thursday, and, of course, festival curators, Hawthorne Heights, are back, while new additions to the Is For Lovers family include The All-American Rejects, Movements, Finch, Turnover and Armor For Sleep.

“We are happy to be back in 2024, soaking up the summer sun with these bands and fans, most of who have been shedding and shredding tears with us since 2004,” JT Woodruff, Hawthorne Heights’ vocalist and co-founder of the Is For Lovers Festival. “While each show has a wildly different feel, we think it’s important to celebrate the local and regional attractions at each date. Is For Lovers Festival is designed to put the fan in a Time Machine, and transport them back to the most vibrant years of their lives. We try to make it an easy day spent in beautiful locations with bands that helped shape who they are. Hawthorne Heights is excited to be outside, setting up tents, loading gear, singing these songs, and personally spending time with our fans.”

The Is For Lovers Festival launched in 2022, with Hawthorne Heights, the founders and curators of the annual outing, bringing the touring trek to three cities for its inaugural run. In 2023, Is For Lovers expanded, spanning the U.S, from Hawaii to the Outerbanks of North Carolina. Named after Hawthorne Heights’ iconic song, “Ohio Is For Lovers,” previous performers have included Jimmy Eat World, Thrice, Alkaline Trio, Yellowcard, Underoath, The Story So Far, State Champs, Bayside, Thursday, and more. Beyond the music, Is For Lovers delivers an all-around experience for attendees, fostering collaborations with local vendors, hosting a diverse, regionally-inspired marketplace, and featuring a range of activities such as the renowned “Dunk-a-Punk” booth. With its blends of music, camaraderie, and entertainment, Is For Lovers stands as a vibrant celebration of community and happiness.

Hawthorne Heights formed in Dayton, Ohio in 2001. The band has released seven albums over the past 23 years: The Silence in Black and White (2004), If Only You Were Lonely (2006), Fragile Future (2008), Skeletons (2010), Zero (2013), Bad Frequencies (2018) and The Rain Just Follows Me (2021). Alternative Press dubbed them “the kings of writing knockout choruses,” Rolling Stone hailed them as the “grassroots chart kings,” in a nod to the band’s many impressive Billboard debuts including four of their seven albums in the Top 100, and New Noise described their music as “effortless joy.” Hawthorne Heights is JT Woodruff (vocals/guitar), Matt Ridenour (bass), Mark McMillon (guitar), and Chris Popadak (drums).

AWOLNATION’s New Single & Video “Panoramic View” is Out Now

“Panoramic View,” a brand new single and music video from AWOLNATION is out today. It finds Aaron Bruno at his most vulnerable – written on piano at the very start of the pandemic, it reflects the overwhelming fear and uncertainty the world was facing. Speaking to his own unborn children at the time, the track sends an uplifting message of embracing the scariness while harnessing the inner strength to believe that everything will ultimately be alright. The music video, also out today, was directed by Darren Doane.

Opening up about the heartfelt inspiration behind the track, Bruno shares: “I remember writing this one on a piano almost four years ago. It’s quite a sincere and profound song because I wrote it to my scared little kid that I didn’t even have yet. I have twin boys now but we weren’t pregnant yet when I wrote it. Basically, I’m saying I’ll protect you, everything’s gonna be okay. Back then, we all felt scared in some way, no matter who you were—whether you were fearful of being sick or of how governments were handling it, or how your friends were handling it, personal decisions… During that time, I was lyrically and emotionally conceptualizing the idea of writing songs to a child. And in some ways I was writing songs to comfort a younger version of myself. I guess the point is to remind us that we can always find an escape through music, even at the worst times.”

Earlier this month, AWOLNATION celebrated the anniversary of their debut album Megalithic Symphony, which dropped 13 years ago as of March 15. “Panoramic View” is the first single to be released from AWOLNATION’s forthcoming album due out this summer.

AWOLNATION will also be joining 311 and NEON TREES on the “Unity Tour” this summer. The tour will kick off in Cincinnati, Ohio on July 20 and will be making stops throughout the United States before wrapping up in Redmond, Washington on August 31.

Aaron Bruno, the de facto leader, songwriter, and creative force behind the Los Angeles-based project AWOLNATION, has spent the better part of two decades steering the band’s ship of pop-friendly electronic and alternative rock to millions of record sales and streams, a handful of chart-topping singles, and countless shows played to adoring fans around the world. From the 2010 debut’s smash “Sail” and the hype of sophomore album Run to 2018’s organic-leaning Here Come the Runts and 2020’s rock-forward Angel Miners & the Lightning Riders, plus a handful of EPs, remixes, and a covers album, Bruno has mined his sonic creativity for an output of music on par with anyone’s from the last two decades. Following the pandemic, Bruno parted ways with his record label in favor of a new self-releasing/distribution partnership, formed a hardcore band called The Barbarians of California, and became a first-time father of twin boys.
