I have seen Godsmack perform many times over the years and through festivals, concerts and every other setting, Godsmack has always been very hit and miss. At Louder Than Life 2019, the Boston band brought their A-game.

Closing out the Oak Stage on day two of the festival, the band opened with the title track of their latest album When Legends Rise. Sully Erna and company have been going strong for over twenty years now and when you look back at their self-titled debut that burst them onto the scene, it’s impressive to see how many fans still lose it for songs like “Keep Away” and “Whatever”.

There is a night and day difference in performance level when Godsmack is in a great mood and everyone is moving. What I saw in Louisville is what I hope continues throughout their Fall 2019 tour with Halestorm. When this band really comes to deliver, it shows in their performance and the crowd gets that much more into it.

Setlist:
When Legends Rise
1000hp
Cryin’ Like a B*tch!!
Unforgettable
Awake
Something Different
Keep Away
Batalla de los tambores
Whatever
Bulletproof
I Stand Alone

Dead Posey Play Their Biggest Audience So Far at Louder Than Life | Photos

in Louisville, KY on September 27th, 2019.

If there was one newer band that caught my attention over the three day Louder Than Life festival, it was California’s Dead Posey. I went into this performance on the Loudmouth Stage not knowing what to expect and ended up loving the gritty rock vibe they presented to Louisville.

While some of the bands throughout the long weekend were suffering in the heat or just strumming along with the “business as usual” attitude, Dead Posey was in the moment and shelled out a thick, bassy sound from the first thirty seconds. They not only were something different than other bands performing at the Kentucky Expo Center, but they stood out in a good way because of it.

As of now, this feels like a band on the start of something solid and I hope I’m right when I say this: Dead Posey is a band no one should sleep on.

DP is currently in the process of writing a new EP, which will hopefully lead to a full LP down the road. The band will also be heading overseas supporting Theory later this year (tour dates provided on the Facebook page link). You can watch the music video for “Freak Show” below.

Dropkick Murphys At Louder Than Life | Photos

Day two of Louder Than Life Festival in Louisville, KY had quite the variety in bands, including names like Guns N’ Roses, Ice Cube, Godsmack, Halestorm, and Dropkick Murphys. DWP festivals have become known to throw shades of variety outside of the standard rock and metal bands that have become staples, and I feel Dropkick Murphys should become regulars at DWP events.

There is a positive energy from DKM that a majority of bands could never possess. It’s the rhythm and sing-along vibes in their music along with the variety in sound from so many instruments that is sorely missing in standard rock bands.

Dropkick Murphys are currently on a North American tour with Clutch and will be heading overseas in 2020. Here’s hoping we see more of Massachusetts’ beloved at these multi-day festivals to help liven our spirits while we all dance frantically shoulder to shoulder in the crowd.

Setlist:
The Boys Are Back
Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ya
Rose Tattoo
I Fought the Law (The Crickets cover)
The State of Massachusetts
I’m Shipping Up to Boston

Anti-Flag Performing At Louder Than Life | Photos

This morning, the Anti-Flag Instagram account sent out messages to followers with a message about gun debates and context in America, with a closing message of “Oct 4”. It was this past weekend where different messages were sent in Louisville, KY on stage at Louder Than Life.

Any band that is able to get a circle pit going in 94 degree weather proves that the musicians on stage have presence. It was Justin Sane and Chris Dos/No. 2 who were uniting a crowd on the same message about making a place where racism, sexism and other forms of hate would not exist.

It is a turbulent time in the United States due to political divisions (along with the many other issues that exist outside of left vs right). I am more than curious to see what Anti-Flag have to say through their new music which will hopefully be coming soon.

Setlist:
Die for the Government
The Press Corpse
Turncoat
This Is the End (For You My Friend)
Brandenburg Gate

Motionless In White Talk Disguise, Halloween, Tattoos, Hockey & More

An interview with Chris Motionless of Motionless In White on day one of Louder Than Life 2019.   Chris talks about the difference between Disguise and previous MIW albums, hockey, which band he would love to tour with, his tattoos, and more.

Motionless in White, often abbreviated MIW, is an American metal band from Scranton, Pennsylvania. Formed in 2005, the band consists of Chris “Motionless” Cerulli (lead vocals), Ryan Sitkowski (lead guitar), Ricky “Horror” Olson (rhythm guitar), Vinny Mauro (drums), and Justin Morrow (bass). The band has stated that their band name derived from an Eighteen Visions song.

There is something to be said about a band who can work the “Fashion Over Function” style of showmanship, and Motionless In White were able to do that in 94 degree weather in Louisville, KY.

This was the first time I was able to see Motionless In White for several years. There have been some lineup changes since the last time I saw them in 2016, but it appears that Chris Motionless and company are still chugging along. New bassist Justin Morrow is a great addition to the band and holds a great presence on stage as well.

Disguise, the band’s latest album, came out this past June and the single “Brand New Numb” is still getting airplay across the US and through satellite radio. MIW will roll on with the Trick R Treat tour with We Came As Romans through the last week of October.

Setlist:
Disguise
Necessary Evil
Reincarnate
Voices
Headache
Brand New Numb
Eternally Yours

Sum 41 Shine At Louder Than Life | Photos

Photos of Sum 41 at Louder Than Life.
All photos taken by Luke Spencer
in Louisville, KY on September 29th,2019.

My love for Sum 41 has been rekindled in 2019. After their fantastic new album Order In Decline came out this summer, the Canadians have been living on the road through the Disrupt Tour and their own headlining shows. At Louder Than Life, the band sounds just as good as they did over 15 years ago.

This rejuvenated Sum 41 is not the lighthearted and wacky-antics band of the All Killer No Filler days, rather this is a band who is focused and ready to call out problems in both the political world and modern culture. The band has grown up while still keeping up with what their fans want and never phoning it in.

2019 has been a great year for rock and metal. Bands like TOOL and Slipknot will get the most talk about having great albums released this year and helping revitalize the genres, but Sum 41 deserves a lot of credit for what they have brought to this great year.

Setlist:
The Hell Song
Motivation
Over My Head (Better Off Dead)
We’re All to Blame
Out for Blood
Walking Disaster
We Will Rock You (Queen cover)
In Too Deep
Fat Lip
Still Waiting

Halestorm Impress At Louder Than Life 2019 | Photos

Photos of Halestorm at Louder Than Life.
All photos taken by Luke Spencer
in Louisville, KY on September 28th, 2019.

It’s 2019 and after many relentless years of touring around the world, rock fans are starting to understand the force that Halestorm is. It’s not just a group of four with talent, but this is a band with presence.

Lzzy and Arejay Hale feed off each other and the crowd pays attention to every word sang and note hit. It became crowd surfer crazy during this set and it is impressive that Halestorm was able to get so much energy out of a crowd in 94 degree heat in Kentucky.

It’s been over a year since the band’s latest album Vicious was released and the group has virtually taken no rest sense. Halestorm will on the beginning of a Fall tour supporting Godsmack across the United States. Whether it’s another massive tour or new music, here’s hoping Lzzy and company continue to win crowds over one show at a time.

Setlist:
Do Not Disturb
Love Bites (So Do I)
I Get Off
Familiar Taste of Poison / Amen
Freak Like Me
Chemicals
Uncomfortable
I Miss the Misery

Slipknot Raise The Heat At Louder Than Life 2019 | Photos

Photos of Slipknot at Louder Than Life 2019.
All photos taken by Luke Spencer
in Louisville, KY on September 27th, 2019.

It might have been 95 degrees all day at the Kentucky Expo Center but Slipknot still proved they could make things hotter. Capping off night one of Louder Than Life, Slipknot returned to Kentucky as part of the Knotfest Roadshow and gave arguably the best performance of the festival.

While Corey sounded great and the guitars were again on fire, it was Clown who definitely was firing on cylinders. He was all over the stage throughout the night and you could tell he was having a good time. It’s great to see this band being happy as they perform and tens of thousands all screamed along to Iowa’s monsters.

My favorite standout moment was when GWAR’s tour manager was in the photo pit not as a photographer, but just to give the finger to Corey and Clown while they performed. The two men of the knot returned the gesture for a good 20 seconds mid-song.

During the festival, news broke that the Metallica tour to Australia and New Zealand with Slipknot was indefinitely postponed due to health issues with James Hetfield. Slipknot will continue on their tour and those dates down under will be made up in the future by both bands.
