Highly Suspect Bask In The Sun At Aftershock | Photos

I have been a fan of Highly Suspect since the first time I heard “Lydia”. This was the no-gimmick New York based band that was easy to connect with and was upfront about everything in their sound. Aftershock 2019 marked the first time I had seen the band in over two years, and I have to say I missed hearing them live.

Grammy nominated songs “Lydia” and “My Name Is Human” stood out as many in the crowd sang along. The sun was glaring right into the stage and the dust cloud settled over everything, but it did not effect their performance or quality in sound. The band is getting ready for the release of their third album MCID coming next month. Two singles have already been released from the album in “16” and “Upperdrugs” (hear them below) and if history repeats itself, Highly Suspect will have a wild amount of success from the upcoming LP.

Setlist:
Bath Salts
Lost
Lydia
Claudeland
Serotonia
My Name Is Human
Wolf

Ded Open Day Two Of Aftershock | Photos

Ded is back. With that, has come a new stage presence and intensity. Two years ago at Aftershock they closed out the side stage with smoke and white-out eye contacts. In 2019, they are shaking off the dust (literally) with their new image.

The band is currently getting ready to drop their newest single to SiriusXM Octane and hopefully will have their second album ready for the beginning of 2020. I said before when I saw the group at Louder Than Life that I’m curious to see if this new visual evolution will also reflect in their sound. Ded has earned a considerable fan base in a short amount of time so this could be another jumping on point for many others.

There is an undeniable energy on stage when they perform and that’s good to see. Whether you are into their style or not, Ded knows how to grab your attention when playing. As they already have that talent down early in their career, it’s a good sign that they will be around for a while.

You can check out some of the music from the band’s debut album below. Ded is currently touring with In This Moment and New Years Day (which is a solid lineup). You can find tour dates and more info on Ded’s Facebook page here: Ded on Facebook

Bring Me The Horizon Return To Aftershock | Photos

I can’t stress enough how Bring Me The Horizon has improved their stage presence over the years. I first starting seeing this band live in 2013 and watching them evolve into a live spectacle like I saw at Aftershock makes me appreciate the design that much more.

2019 has been a big year for BMTH with touring and the release of their latest album Amo. While I personally was not crazy about this album, I have to say that hearing the songs live has changed my attitude toward some of the new music. “Wonderful Life” is my favorite track from the new LP and the band delivered when performing it. For material from years ago, I’ve been hearing “Can You Feel My Heart” live for years and it still works great at a concert setting.

Regardless of how I feel about the new album, I have to say that the band from Sheffield still shines. I’ll take any chance to see BMTH perform live that I can get.

Setlist:
MANTRA
The House of Wolves
Medicine
Wonderful Life
The Best Is Yet to Come
Shadow Moses
Happy Song
Mother Tongue
Can You Feel My Heart
Sugar Honey Ice & Tea
Drown
Throne

Slipknot Cap Night One Of Aftershock | Photos

on October 11th, 2019 in Sacramento, CA.

There was literal screaming in the night at Discovery Park. It was coming from the crowd as they waited for the curtain to fall, revealing Slipknot on stage. It was the perfect way to cap the first day of Aftershock 2019.

We Are Not Your Kind has become one of the key albums of 2019 for metal fans. The music is welcomed at every live show and hearing it mixed with Slipknot’s biggest songs makes a seamless flow that all belongs together. The connecting songs of “Solway Firth” to “The Heretic Anthem” to “Psychosocial” feels like an amazing Slipknot playlist and hearing it live provides of adrenaline to wake the dead.

It was announced a few weeks ago that the Australia/New Zealand Tour with Metallica has been postponed indefinitely. Here’s hoping that much more touring for Slipknot comes in 2020. Whether it’s at the big DWP festivals featuring Metallica or heading overseas, everyone needs to experience Slipknot live on this tour. It’s worth your time and money.

Setlist:
People = Shit
(sic)
Get This
Unsainted
Before I Forget
Solway Firth
The Heretic Anthem
Psychosocial

A Day To Remember Live At Aftershock | Photos

Photos of A Day To Remember at Aftershock.

on October 13th, 2019 in Sacramento, CA.

A Day To Remember was the band that woke everyone up at the main stage at Aftershock. On the third day of the festival of nonstop music, endless sun, and a surprising amount of dust, I don’t think any other band could have riled up the energy from a crowd like ADTR did.

From the opening Michael Buffer recording to the variety of music over their past discography (including the new song “Degenerates”), the Florida group gave everyone what they wanted. Confetti, steam cannons, pyro, crowd surfing, circle pits…the set had everything.

The new ADTR album You’re Welcome will be coming soon; the follow up to Bad Vibrations. Now signed with Fueled by Ramen, I’m extremely curious to see the direction that the band goes. As someone who greatly enjoyed Bad Vibrations and Common Courtesy, I’m hoping the trend of lasting good music continues. Everyone needs music worth replaying and remembering.

Setlist:
2nd Sucks
Right Back at It Again
Paranoia
Sticks & Bricks
Better Off This Way
Rescue Me
Have Faith in Me
I’m Made of Wax, Larry, What Are You Made Of?
Degenerates
All Signs Point to Lauderdale
All I Want
If It Means a Lot to You
The Plot to Bomb the Panhandle
The Downfall of Us All

The band is currently on a headline tour through the US with I Prevail and Beartooth. You can find tour dates and upcoming info on their Facebook page here: A Day To Remember on Facebook

Sick Puppies Return With New Music at Aftershock | Photos

It has been a while since the DWP festivals have been graced with Australia’s Sick Puppies. Opening up the Kolas stage on day two of Aftershock, the band were welcomed by the dust covered crowd who were chanting for the band by the end of the set. On the band’s Facebook page is a video of the crowd in action.

During their performance, the band introduced their new song “There Goes The Neighborhood” to an overwhelmingly positive reaction. In an interview backstage, the group talked about how 2020 will be big with a new album coming at the beginning of the year. Here’s hoping it comes sooner than later and that we all will get to see the group share the stage with Metallica in the upcoming DWP festivals.

Below you can watch the interview with Sick Puppies discussing new music. You can also keep up to date with touring and more info on the band’s Facebook page here: Sick Puppies on Facebook

Interview at Aftershock 2019

It was great to talk with the band after not seeing them since 2016. Here’s hoping 2020 is huge for them as a new album is coming, the new song “There Goes The Neighborhood” was debuted live at Aftershock, and hopefully they’ll get to play at the Spring DWP festivals next year.

TOOL Kick Off Tour; Perform New Songs Live For The First Time At Aftershock | Photos

Photos of TOOL at Aftershock.
All photos taken by Luke Spencer
on October 13th, 2019 in Sacramento, CA.

At the start of TOOL’s new tour, Aftershock Festival was introduced to several songs performed live for the first time from the band’s latest album Fear Inoculum. This album marked the long awaited return and reached #1 on Billboard’s Top 200.

TOOL ended the festival on night three at Discovery Park to a sold out crowd. The beginning of the set opened to people chanting “We want TOOL” while the band started with “Fear Inoculum”. This was my third time seeing the band live in 2019 and it was this set that felt special from the previous ones. The band took the best elements from their spring tour (production, delivery, etc) and amplified that to the crowd in Sacramento. A highlight coming when the laser lights shot into the crowd, illuminating everything in the park night.

Many of the upcoming tour dates are already sold out however tickets do become available closer to the date. It’s worth looking into as seeing TOOL live in 2019 is more of a spectacle than it’s ever been. You can watch fan shot videos of “Fear Inoculum” and “Pneuma” being performed live for the first time below.
