The Sword Announce Two Career Spanning Compilations

It’s been two years since the Austin, TX heavy rockers decided to take a break, but The Sword are unsheathed once more: Two career-spanning collections will be released simultaneously, both showcasing the technically dazzling, riff-heavy and far-reaching metal that the band has been known for since forming 15 years ago.

Conquest of Kingdoms, an explosive three-disc vinyl collection of rarities and oddities, offers 30 tracks (16 previously unreleased) and is housed in a triple-gatefold package, including B-sides, oddities and live recordings of fan favorites like “Freya,” “Iron Swan” and “Fire Lances of the Ancient Hyperzephyrians,” as well as cover versions of “Immigrant Song” (Led Zeppelin), “Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings” (ZZ Top), “She” (KISS), “Forever My Queen” (Pentagram) and more. A truncated digital version will also be available. In addition to the standard vinyl release, a limited-edition color variant (1,000 pressings worldwide) will also be available exclusively via TheSwordOfficial.comCraftRecordings.com, as well as independent retailers.

Chronology 2006–2018 is a three-disc CD compendium, which — in addition to the aforementioned rarities — also includes The Sword’s greatest hits and fan favorites. Distilling the band’s complete discography, this collection comprises 52 tracks (12 previously unreleased), including the studio recordings of “Freya,” “Iron Swan,” “Cloak of Feathers” and “Deadly Nightshade.” The set also features expansive new liner notes with contributions from the band, plus Lars Ulrich (Metallica), Mark Morton (Lamb of God) and Neil Fallon (Clutch).

Both titles will be released on June 5th and are available for pre-order today. Accompanying the pre-order is an advance single of a previously unreleased version of “Freya,” recorded live at Stubbs in Austin, TX in 2011.  Listen to the track and pre-save/pre-order Conquest of Kingdomshere.

Hailing from Austin, Texas, The Sword draw from a wide array of influences and hard-rock genres. First conceived in 2003, the band hit their stride about a year later, when founding vocalist and guitarist J.D. Cronise joined forces with guitarist Kyle Shutt, bassist Bryan Richie and drummer Trivett Wingo for a much raved-about appearance at Austin’s famed SXSW festival. National touring stints with everyone from Clutch to indie rock darlings …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead followed, and by 2006, The Sword released their highly anticipated debut album, Age of Winters.

From there they went on to release seven further studio albums; tour with the likes of Metallica, Lamb of God, Trivium, Kyuss Lives! and Opeth; and see their music reach millions through placements in the Guitar Hero video game series (“Freya”) and the cult classic film Jennifer’s Body (“Celestial Crown”).

Over their 17-year career, The Sword have proven themselves to be one of the most prolific and revered bands in metal — not only by fans, but also by the media and their peers. In the Chronology package liner notes, Lars Ulrich exclaims,

“The Sword blew my mind. The best music always sounds like it threads through, and is part of, some sort of lineage, some sort of continuity, some sort of history, but always with its own additional X factor… For me, they were one of the few with that aforementioned additional X factor, so we should absolutely celebrate their inspirational music.”

Mark Morton recollects,

“The Sword was a band I had been waiting for… a band that I wished I was in… a heavy blues, acid rock, psychedelic, intergalactic riff paradise. In my estimation, The Sword was the perfect blend of Black Sabbath, Blue Cheer, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Sleep and Clutch… somehow familiar yet incredibly fresh at the same time.”

Neil Fallon adds,

“The phrase ‘world building’ is usually reserved for science fiction and fantasy. But I think you could apply it to The Sword as well. The lyrics and music capture the spirit of what first attracted me to heavy metal, namely, the escapism. There’s only a handful of bands that do this convincingly, and The Sword is one of them.”

These two new collections provide a comprehensive and unrivaled deep-dive experience into the band’s career, making them an essential addition to the collection of any fan of heavy music. Now, with the double release of Conquest of Kingdoms and Chronology 2006–2018,The Sword have complied an extensive and essential collection that celebrates their legacy and impressive back catalog. Bryan Richie says that it was simply the right time to revisit the band’s career thus far.

“We’ve got all these exclusive 7”s and a split record or two, that were pressed in 1,000 quantities — maybe people heard those tracks on a YouTube stream in not really the greatest quality,” he says. “As the band had gone on hiatus, we had this wealth of material to share including live sets — things that were sitting on my hard drive for years, things that were given to me at shows. It seemed like the right time.”

John D. Cronise describes the differences between the two formats and the methodology for compiling these:

“The CD package will be more of a career retrospective with selections from each of our albums as well as the rarities and B-sides and things. Sort of a mini box set, you could say. The set will include a booklet with essays and photos, to make it special and extra. Whereas the LP release [Conquest of Kingdoms] is more streamlined, with just the B-side and rarities material. Personally for me, that’s what’s exciting about the releases. A lot of that stuff I never thought would see the light of day but I always thought was really cool and was proud of.”

The Sword recently announced that they will be hitting the road to tour North America with Primus on their A Tribute to Kings tour. The band will also be playing a number of headline shows. Tickets and full info available here. www.theswordofficial.com

Speaking on playing live, Richie adds

“I’m always ready to play riffs with my dudes, so we’ll see where it goes from here,” says Richie. “Maybe The Sword will come out of hibernation every once in a while to play some shows or tour — whatever it is, I’m here for it. Hopefully, it’ll become a thing. Virus permitting.”

Both titles are available to pre-order now. Click here for Conquest of Kingdoms, or here for Chronology 2006–2018. Special bundles are also available through CraftRecordings.com and TheSwordOfficial.com.

WOLFHEART (Tuomas Saukkonen) Talks Virtual Concert, Wolves Of Karelia, Paul The Virus & More

A live stream interview with Tuomas Saukkonen of Wolfheart talking about the new album Wolves Of Karelia, Virtual Concerts, referring to the virus as Paul, and hopeful touring later in 2020.

Emerging from dusky woods, the untamed and forlorn nature of Finnish quartet Wolfheart leads them to one of the most picturesque regions of their home country, Karelia. Just as wildlife itself maintains harmony through a violent clash of the beautiful and unpredictable, Wolves of Karelia explores the previously coined genre of winter metal – smoothly connecting a traditional approach towards extreme genres (‘Reaper’) with atmospheric or acoustic details (‘the Hammer’, ‘Horizon on Fire’), crowned by the instrumental interlude, ‘Eye of the Storm’. With the noted complexity of their fifth album, Wolfheart master the art of sonic storytelling through eight multi-faceted stylistic eposes with a virtuosity of riffs, guitar solos, and abrupt tempo-changes. Above all, however, Wolves of Karelia attack with complex arrangements and melodically-grasped melancholy, creating a release as bewitching and intense as it is atmospherically resonant. I Prevail x Illenium + Excision Want You To “Feel Something”

Fusing three signature styles and spirits on one boundary-breaking anthem, ILLENIUM and Excision reunite to unleash a new single entitled “Feel Something” featuring I Prevail today. This marks the first time the Michigan-based band has featured on a dance track.

Listen and “feel something” here:

ILLENIUM and Excision teased “Feel Something” without a title during a career-first back-to-back set at Lost Lands 2019. EDM.com dubbed it “feels-heavy.”

After generating nearly 200 million total streams on last year’s sophomore blockbuster Trauma and landing on the pages of Variety and beyond, rock juggernaut I Prevail received nominations for two GRAMMY Awards in 2020 — in the categories of “Best Rock Album” for Trauma and for “Best Metal Performance” for “Bow Down.” Check out the band’s recent features at Variety and at NPR.

I Prevail’s latest single “Hurricane” just landed at No. 1 on the Billboard Rock Chart. It’s the first chart-topping single of the band’s career. The acoustic version, dubbed “Hurricane (Reimagined),” is available here.

It has been a banner year for I Prevail since the March 2019 release of Trauma, and the band’s story hits as hard as the music. They took a mental health breakdown, turned it into a powerful body of work, and made an audience connection online and I.R.L. These numbers—200 million streams and 100 million views and a Top 15 debut on the Billboard Top 200—remain unprecedented for rock acts. Trauma continues to leave a mark upon all who hear it and in many forms.

The gold-certified Denver-based artist Nick Miller—known professionally as ILLENIUM—continues a tradition of seamless genre alchemy. Augmented with cybernetic dubstep drops from Excision, the track pushes and pulls between moments of dancefloor bliss and mosh pit-splitting grooves. GRAMMY® Award-nominated platinum rock band I Prevail anchor this ebb and flow with hypnotic guitars and an infectious chant from singer Brian Burkheiser who screams, “I just wanna feel something.” As it reflects their respective sounds, “Feel Something” also represents new territory for this trio of talents.

ALESTORM Returns with New Single “Treasure Chest Party Quest”

Let’s drink and party the ALESTORM way – we’re only here to have fun!

Ahoy, filthy landlubbers! ALESTORM has just landed ashore with a brand new single, “Treasure Chest Party Quest”, fresh off of their upcoming album, Curse of the Crystal Coconut, out May 29, 2020 via Napalm Records. In true, raucous ALESTORM fashion, this chant-a-long foot-stomper will have you amped up to party in no time, and provides a hefty sample of what’s to come on the upcoming album.

With “Treasure Chest Party Quest”, Captain Christopher Bowes & Co. make one thing crystal clear: they will come for your treasure chest while partying so hard, they probably won’t even remember they stole your riches. Try to get this song out of your head – we dare ya!

But that’s not all! To the delight of seafarers everywhere, ALESTORM has also dropped a rowdy new video for the track – a wild visual ride through the minds of the “Pirate Metal Drinking Crew” that only they could dream up. Track suits, gambling, sportscars and newborn babies galore… they’re just here to have fun!

ALESTORM on the new video:
“Oh wow! We tried our very best to make a video that would alienate as many of our fans as possible. I think we succeeded! This song is about giving birth to yourself, selling out, and driving awful Yugoslavian cars. All the classic elements of pirate metal!”

The“Pirate Metal Drinking Crew” is back to show all you filthy landlubbers what they’re made of! The band’s sixth long-player features eleven tracks presented true ALESTORM fashion, featuring guest performances from musical greats like Ally Storch of Subway To Sally (violin on the entire album) and Captain Yarrface of Rumahoy! A must-have, riff-laden anthem at any party, “Treasure Chest Party Quest” takes the listener onto a journey into the depths of “Tortugas” darkest taverns and Christopher Bowes’ unique sense of humor. The smashing, lively track “Chomp Chomp”, featuring vocals of Vreth of Finntroll, may make you never want to enter the open waters again, but will definitely entice you to dance along with its addictive melodies. “Pirate Metal Drinking Crew” is yet another foot-stomping anthem on the album that excels with a catchy rhythm and indelible hook. Be careful to not anger the great pirate Scurvy, or he might just unleash the Curse Of The Crystal Coconut with the brutal riffs of the “Pirate’s Scorn” upon you. Whether the album makes you want to grab a fresh coconut and sip it or open up a nice bottle of beer – it will definitely lead to a wild piratical escapade. For the extra-adventurous pirates amongst you, ALESTORM will release a 2-CD Mediabook with ground-breaking 16th century interpretations of the songs. Be sure to get yours.

Atreyu Share “Super Hero” Video Feat. M. Shadows + Aaron Gillespie

Atreyu have shared the video for “Super Hero” from their 2018-released album In Our Wake. The track features appearances from Avenged Sevenfold frontman M.Shadows and Underoath drummer/vocalist Aaron Gillespie.

Watch it here:

Atreyu feat. M. Shadows & Aaron Gillespie – Super Hero

“Our song ‘Super Hero’ was written about what it’s like to be a parent and the vast amount of time, effort, energy, and hard work it takes to be a real-life superhero for your children,” the band says. “The song also has a broader meaning, especially given the current situation the entire world is dealing with. There are many superheroes out there who appear in many forms — namely the first responders, medical personnel, and health care workers who are putting others first as they work to fight COVID-19 and to save lives. We dedicate this song to them.”

Atreyu are working on their eighth album, due out via Spinefarm Records later this year.

Dirty Honey Launches “Suitcase Sessions” Video Series

When COVID-19 disrupted Dirty Honey‘s plans to return to Australia to record new music with legendary producer Nick DiDia, frontman Marc LaBelle concocted an idea to make use of the unexpected downtime: Suitcase Sessions.

“I’ve always wanted to shoot videos out in nature, in non-traditional locations, and have a high-quality recording rig that was small enough to fit in a suitcase,” LaBelle explained.

The band debuts their first session today: a stripped-down version of “Heartbreaker” in front of a stunning stretch of mountains in Lone Pine, CA, a location synonymous as the backdrop for the most celebrated Westerns filmed since the 1920s.  Check out the video (directed by “Rolling 7s” Director Scott Fleishman) here:

Dirty Honey – Heartbreaker (Suitcase Sessions)

“I’ve taken my motorcycle up to Lone Pine for a couple of years now, so I know the area really well,” LaBelle explained. “‘Heartbreaker’ was written on an acoustic guitar, so there was something special about performing it acoustically with those snow-covered Sierra Nevada peaks in the distance.”

Also today, the band members – vocalist LaBelle, John Notto/guitars, Justin Smolian/bass, and drummer Corey Coverstone – see their second single, “Rolling 7s,” explode into the Top Five at U.S. Rock Radio. “Rolling 7s” follows the band’s debut single into the upper echelons of the U.S. and Canadian Rock Charts, coming in at #5 this week.   “When I’m Gone” made record industry history last Fall when it because the first track by an unsigned artist to go all the way to #1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Chart.
