Tom Morello & Serj Tankian cover GANG OF FOUR’s “Natural’s Not In It”

Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine) and Serj Tankian (System Of A Down) release a cover of Natural’s Not In It.

This new version of Natural’s Not In It is the first single from the album The Problem of Leisure: A Celebration of Andy Gill and Gang of Four, set for release in May 2021. It’s a double album of tracks written by Andy Gill and Gang of Four, all newly reinterpreted and recorded by artists whose own unique contributions to music were enriched by listening to Gang of Four. The album features songs from across Gang of Four’s 40-plus year career, each individually chosen by the artists’ who covered them.

Listen here and watch the video below:

“Andy loved what Tom and Serj did with this song, the fierceness of their attack and the jet-engine scream of feedback” says Gill’s widow, Catherine Mayer. “This was a track Andy always enjoyed performing. He said their version brilliantly captured all the explosive, danceable energy Natural’s Not In It can create in live performance.”

The single, like many on the forthcoming album, first appeared on the band’s extraordinary 1979 debut long player, Entertainment!, an album universally heralded as a classic, and as “the fifth best punk album of all time” by Rolling Stone magazine. In 2006 the track gained new audiences when writer-director Sofia Coppola used it for the opening of her film “Marie Antoinette”.

Says of the single, Tom Morello:

“Andy Gill was one of a handful of artists in history who changed the way guitars are played. His band Gang of Four were just incendiary and completely groundbreaking with Andy’s confrontational, unnerving and sublime playing at the forefront. His jagged plague-disco raptor-attack industrial-funk deconstructed guitar anti-hero sonics and fierce poetic radical intellect were hugely influential to me.”

Further, Serj Tankian says:

“It was a real pleasure to work on this track with Tom and honor the legacy of Andy and Gang of Four at the same time.”

When Gang of Four’s co-founder and only lifelong member Andy Gill, died unexpectedly on February 1st, 2020, the world lost one of its most influential and emulated guitarists and musical trailblazers. In May 2021, the world gets a new way to enjoy his genius and the lasting brilliance of the band he co-founded.

Andy Gill originally conceived of the album to mark the 40th anniversary of the release of Entertainment!in 2019. Catherine Mayer explains that this plan had already changed by the time of Andy’s death after some artists chose tracks from different albums and periods. His dedication to the project was such that he delayed the ambulance that took him to intensive care while Mayer fetched his laptop. Installed in hospital, he asked her to bring noise-cancelling headphones too so he could listen and make notes on the incoming mixes. He worked on the music for ten more days. Then doctors put him on a ventilator to try to save his life. They were surprised by his rapid deterioration and later came to suspect he was among Europe’s first victims of Covid.

“Andy was massively excited about this project,” Mayer says. “It wasn’t of course conceived as a tribute album, but it’s comforting to me that he lived to see artists he hugely admired enthusiastically agreeing to participate, signalling that the admiration was mutual.”

The album’s brilliant artwork was created by artist Damien Hirst, a long-term Gang of Four aficionado.

Details of all of the artists who have contributed to the album and the full track listing will be made available on January 14th, 2021.

The album is being released in a variety of different vinyl, CD and cassette formats featuring different versions of the artwork from Damien Hirst. All formats are available to pre-order now from gangoffour.uk/store, with the strictly limited edition “Dogluxe” double gatefold vinyl version exclusively available there.

Wilson Announce ‘Thank You, Goodnight. LIVE’

‘Twas the night of December 28, 2019, when all through The Crofoot Ballroom, creatures were stirring, moshing and expelling guttural screams. Detroiters WILSON were on stage delivering one last dose of their signature “fuckery sound,” which they hold so close. Smashing drums, deafening bass, roaring guitars and searing vocals were enjoyed by WILSON fans — from the world over, not just locals. Knowing this could very well be the final time, WILSON performed an unforgettable set that many would call sublime.

THANK YOU, GOOD NIGHT. LIVE captures the show in all its glory and gives a taste to all those fans who could not attend. The energy, the attitude, the fuckery, and even the heartbreak are all visceral in this collection of 10 songs from the band’s last ever performance.

THANK YOU, GOOD NIGHT. LIVE (NovelGoot) will be available at all DSPs on January 29, 2021, with pre-orders beginning January 15. The song Dumptruck” is now available as the first release from the album. “Dumptruck” is a sonic punch to the face as it kicks in with gang vocals chanting, “This shit bumps, this shit fucks, this shit dumps like a dump truck.”

Knowing it was ambiguous if the band would continue after 2019, WILSON decided to play one last very special show in their hometown of Detroit, Michigan as a thank you to all of their longtime fans and supporters. Having all of the rooms at The Crofoot Ballroom in nearby Pontiac, MI at their disposal, the band held a pre-party for a limited number of fans in the Pike Room as well as a silent auction of WILSON lifeline items like backdrops, music video props and costumes, stage props, and even Chad’s beard which he had shaved off in 2016. All proceeds went to the charities Lighthouse Of Oakland County and MusiCares.

The sold-out 1200 capacity venue saw people attending from all over the US, as well as hosting fans from Sweden, Germany and the UK who dared not miss this once-in-a-lifetime event. For the band, the show was extremely emotional with the energy and anxiety going through the roof. With family, friends and fans new and old in attendance, the band roared through 19 songs from 2015’s RIGHT TO RISE and 2018’s TASTY NASTY albums, of which the band have curated their 10 favorites for this collection.

The room was loud with WILSON’s manic performance and approving roars from the audience. It had that ripe, but sweet smell that only a hall full of sweaty humans and a floor soaked with years of stale beer can create. “The emotion dripped from all of our eyes,” says lead singer Chad Nicefield. (Though that could’ve also come from the smell.)  They’ve captured all of that with this release, defining their legacy and cementing their place in the annals of Detroit Rock City history.

“I had the show recorded at the time for the purpose of us to listen back to it and hold that moment in our hands and minds forever,” says Nicefield. “I don’t think any of us had even thought about releasing a live record at that time. It wasn’t until our friend Josh Sobeck (one of our favorite live Sound Engineers) randomly sent me a mix of ‘Dumptruck’ he had put together that we imagined showing this moment to anyone else. Thankfully he did, though! One listen to that track and it was clear as could be…the fans deserve to own this moment with us. So, cheers to you all, the REAL Masters Of Ceremony! This one goes out to the house that Fuckery built! See you all again one day, maybe?”

To which Lloyd Christmas would say, “So you’re saying there’s a chance?”

In the meantime, while it is bittersweet that the band chose to end their decade long run as WILSON that night (for now, anyway), it is exciting and completely appropriate that they would gift their fans with one last full blast of their signature “fuckery sound, and that is THANK YOU, GOOD NIGHT. LIVE

THANK YOU, GOOD NIGHT. LIVE Track Listing:
1. Dumptruck
2. Wrong Side Of History
3. Give Em Hell
4. Windows Down!
5. Summertime Treat (Tasty Nasty)
6. The Flood
7. All My Friends
8. Fuck Up My High
9. Like A Baller
10. House Of Fuckery

Shinedown is an American rock band from Jacksonville, Florida, formed by singer Brent Smith in 2001 after the dissolution of Dreve, his previous band. Smith, still under contract with record label Atlantic Records, recruited the band’s original lineup of Jasin Todd as guitarist, Brad Stewart on bass, and Barry Kerch on drums. Consistent for the first two album cycles, a few lineup changes followed in the late 2000s, eventually stabilizing with Smith and Kerch alongside Zach Myers on guitar and Eric Bass on bass. The group has released six studio albums: Leave a Whisper (2003), Us and Them (2005), The Sound of Madness (2008), Amaryllis (2012), Threat to Survival (2015), and Attention Attention (2018). Shinedown has sold more than ten million records worldwide, and has had the most number one singles on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts out of any band, with 16.

While Charlie’s plane was severely damaged and the pilot hurt, Franz decided instead of shooting him down, to risk his own life and escort him into safety. Both survived and over 50 years later they met each other again and became very close friends. A lovely story, that did not became public before 1990.

Starbenders Release ‘Holy Mother (Live)’ Music Video

As the world gazes up at the sky for Jupiter and Saturn to unite in Aquarius, Starbenders have immortalized the Great Conjunction with a live video of their single, ‘Holy Mother‘. The band captured what they do best, playing live while feeding off of one another’s energy. ‘Holy Mother‘ is sonically built upon a Godzilla-sized riff which provides the perfect launchpad for Kimi Shelter‘s signature raven-winged vocals.

Speaking about the music video, Kimi Shelter shared:

“We wanted an opportunity to connect with the people, so we set up some microphones and blasted through a raw performance of ‘Holy Mother’. Our wish is for you to take Starbenders home for the holidays. The band sends all our love to you as we glow into the fifth dimension.”

Watch the live music video for ‘Holy Mother‘ here or by clicking the image below.

There really isn’t anyone else out there doing what Starbenders have been since forming in 2014: The intoxicating combination of ’70s glitter and ’80s glam with new wave and new romantic, seduced into this new decade by four thrilling musicians and, in frontwoman Kimi Shelter, one of the most exciting songwriters in contemporary rock & roll.

The band is completed by bassist Aaron Lecesne, guitarist Kriss Tokaji and drummer Emily Moon. The band’s latest album, “Love Potions“, sees Starbenders moving in a more adventurous and slightly experimental direction.
