WARDRUNA Reveal Lyric Video for New Single “Skugge”

In advance of the worldwide January 22 release of their highly anticipated fifth full-length album KVITRAVN via BY NORSE MUSIC and SONY MUSIC / COLUMBIA RECORDS, the traditional Nordic folk outfit WARDRUNA have shared a new single “Skugge.” Translated to “Shadow” in English, the song traces an eerie sonic journey voicing a dialogue between man and shadow. Its brooding introduction recalls the subtle majesty of fan favorite track “Helvegen” (from their 2013 album Runaljod – Yggdrasil) as WARDRUNA‘s idiosyncratic synthesis of hypnotic percussion and delicate vocal interplay comes to the forefront. The lyric video for “Skugge” was recorded by Ragnarok Film with producer/director Ole Fredrik Wannebo, photographer/editor Toni Kotka and Sverre Brandtzaeg. Watch it below or view it across all streaming platforms along with pre-order options for KVITRAVN HERE.

Each track on KVITRAVN is ingrained with meaning that delves deep into the philosophical, the esoteric, the Nordic myths and how old traditions define human nature and nature itself. “‘Skugge’ feels particularly personal for it shifts the focus inwards,” remarks founding member and composer EINAR SELVIK. “It is a song about shadows, echoes and the balance between seeking answers and wisdom internally and externally. The accompanying lyric video allows the listener to journey deep into Wardruna’s world and offers space for reflection and contemplation, should you submit to it…”

SELVIK was recently announced to headline the JORVIK Viking Festival–the largest Viking festival in Europe—during a special live-streamed event taking place as part of That JORVIK Viking Thing online festival from February 15-20 hosted by the JORVIK Viking Centre. He will talk about his music, demonstrate traditional Nordic instruments, and play some of WARDRUNA’s most recent music. The event will be streamed live from Norway on Saturday, February 20 at 7:30 P.M. CET. Tickets can be found at jorvikthing.com or jorvikvikingcentre.co.uk.

WARDRUNA were last seen stateside in 2018 when they sold-out a headlining show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado and are scheduled to return to North America in fall 2021; the dates and tickets can be found HERE. With a sound that must truly be experienced live, they performed their first-ever concert in front of the 1,500-year-old Gokstad Viking ship in OsloNO and are the only band to have ever been allowed to hold an amplified concert at the Viking ship museum. Since then, they’ve performed sold-out shows worldwide, including major festival headlining appearances (Hellfest, Roadburn, Summer Breeze, Castle Fest, Echoes & Merveilles, Rock oz Arenes, Rock The Coast, etc.).

Avatar’s current album Hunter Gatherer, out now via eOne, marked the darkest and most thought-provoking release of the band’s over decade long career. A striking and bold manifesto, the album is an unflinchingly ruthless study of a clueless humankind’s ever-increasing velocity into an uncertain future, furthering the reach of the band’s always expanding dark roots. The band’s ambitious new era found the band featured as the cover story of Revolver Magazine’s Fall Issue, where frontman Johannes Eckerström reflects about the power of live performance during a year that has changed the landscape of live music. In 2019, Avatar reunited with producer Jay Ruston (Stone Sour, Anthrax) at Sphere Studios in Los Angeles, California, where the foundation for each song on Hunter Gatherer was laid with the band performing altogether, as they’d done only once before, on Hail the Apocalypse (2014). The old-school method of playing as one in the studio, more akin to how they are on stage, captured the essence of Avatar. Recorded entirely to two-inch tape, Hunter Gatherer exhibits everything that makes Avatar standouts in the vast, rich landscape of heavy metal’s past and present.

The Sword Release New Track From ‘Conquest Of Quarantine’

Texan hard rockers The Sword have unveiled a live performance of “The Warp Riders” as the newest installment of their Conquest of Quarantine lockdown sessions which launched last summer to great excitement from their fans.

The Warp Riders” premiered today on the band’s YouTube channel and can be viewed HERE. The song is the title track from the critically acclaimed 2010 album Warp Riders, which saw the band transition into a hard rock-influenced sound.

The lockdown sessions marked The Sword‘s first live performances together since the band went on hiatus in 2018, as they remotely reunited to perform songs like “Winter’s Wolves,” “Working Man,” and put their own inimitable spin on the T-Rex classic, “Children of the Revolution.” On the concept of recording live sessions in isolation, drummer Jimmy Vela commented, “This was a new approach for us; the “Tribute to Kings” tour postponement led to us finding a different way to connect with our fans. It was fun and something we hadn’t tried yet…”

Watch all the Conquest of Quarantine performances so far on the band’s YouTube channel here, and stay tuned for more installments coming soon.

The Sword’s new compilations, Chronology: 2006 – 2018 and Conquest of Kingdoms, both released last year, each showcase the technically dazzling, riff-heavy and far-reaching metal that the band has been known for since forming 15 years ago.

Conquest of Kingdoms, an explosive three-disc vinyl collection of rarities and oddities, offers 30 tracks (16 previously unreleased) and is housed in a triple-gatefold package, including B-sides, oddities and live recordings of fan favourites like “Freya,” “Iron Swan” and “Fire Lances of the Ancient Hyperzephyrians,” as well as cover versions of “Immigrant Song” (Led Zeppelin), “Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings” (ZZ Top), “She” (KISS), “Forever My Queen” (Pentagram) and more. A truncated digital version is also available.

Chronology: 2006–2018 is a three-disc CD compendium, which — in addition to the aforementioned rarities — also includes The Sword’s greatest hits and fan favourites. Distilling the band’s complete discography, this collection comprises 52 tracks (12 previously unreleased), including the studio recordings of “Freya,” “Iron Swan,” “Cloak of Feathers” and “Deadly Nightshade.” The set also features expansive new liner notes with contributions from the band, plus Lars Ulrich (Metallica), Mark Morton (Lamb of God) and Neil Fallon (Clutch).

Both titles are available now, click here for Conquest of Kingdomsor here for Chronology 2006–2018.

The Pretty Reckless Share “And So It Went” Feat. Tom Morello

THE PRETTY RECKLESS have shared their new single “And So It Went.” The track features guitarist Tom Morello.

Listen to the song and watch the lyric video here & below:

“The world has been in such a state of civil unrest,” says singer Taylor Momsen. “‘And So It Went’ basically comes from that vision. As a songwriter, I feel like I’m not here to preach. I use music to observe and communicate what I see around me. This song felt like the perfect storm for Tom Morello to join in and rip the sound waves apart with his guitar. It was more than a pleasure having him add his unique and defining sound to the song.”

The band previously shared the glamorous video for “25.”

The Pretty Reckless will release their fourth album, Death By Rock And Roll, on February 12 via Fearless Records. Pre-orders are live here

The album, which follows 2010’s Light Me Up, 2014’s Going To Hell, and 2016’s Who You Selling For, is titled after the first single, which rocketed to No. 1 on the rock charts and held strong for several weeks. It marked the fifth No. 1 single of the band’s career and was heralded by Paper, Loudwire, CNN, Forbes, and more. The band also has the incredible and impressive distinction of being the first female-fronted band to have back-to-back No. 1 singles at the active rock format and the first female-fronted act to have five No. 1 singles on the Billboard chart.

DEATH BY ROCK AND ROLL TRACK LISTING:
“Death By Rock And Roll”

Tom Morello & Serj Tankian cover GANG OF FOUR’s “Natural’s Not In It”

Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine) and Serj Tankian (System Of A Down) release a cover of Natural’s Not In It.

This new version of Natural’s Not In It is the first single from the album The Problem of Leisure: A Celebration of Andy Gill and Gang of Four, set for release in May 2021. It’s a double album of tracks written by Andy Gill and Gang of Four, all newly reinterpreted and recorded by artists whose own unique contributions to music were enriched by listening to Gang of Four. The album features songs from across Gang of Four’s 40-plus year career, each individually chosen by the artists’ who covered them.

Listen here and watch the video below:

“Andy loved what Tom and Serj did with this song, the fierceness of their attack and the jet-engine scream of feedback” says Gill’s widow, Catherine Mayer. “This was a track Andy always enjoyed performing. He said their version brilliantly captured all the explosive, danceable energy Natural’s Not In It can create in live performance.”

The single, like many on the forthcoming album, first appeared on the band’s extraordinary 1979 debut long player, Entertainment!, an album universally heralded as a classic, and as “the fifth best punk album of all time” by Rolling Stone magazine. In 2006 the track gained new audiences when writer-director Sofia Coppola used it for the opening of her film “Marie Antoinette”.

Says of the single, Tom Morello:

“Andy Gill was one of a handful of artists in history who changed the way guitars are played. His band Gang of Four were just incendiary and completely groundbreaking with Andy’s confrontational, unnerving and sublime playing at the forefront. His jagged plague-disco raptor-attack industrial-funk deconstructed guitar anti-hero sonics and fierce poetic radical intellect were hugely influential to me.”

Further, Serj Tankian says:

“It was a real pleasure to work on this track with Tom and honor the legacy of Andy and Gang of Four at the same time.”

When Gang of Four’s co-founder and only lifelong member Andy Gill, died unexpectedly on February 1st, 2020, the world lost one of its most influential and emulated guitarists and musical trailblazers. In May 2021, the world gets a new way to enjoy his genius and the lasting brilliance of the band he co-founded.

Andy Gill originally conceived of the album to mark the 40th anniversary of the release of Entertainment!in 2019. Catherine Mayer explains that this plan had already changed by the time of Andy’s death after some artists chose tracks from different albums and periods. His dedication to the project was such that he delayed the ambulance that took him to intensive care while Mayer fetched his laptop. Installed in hospital, he asked her to bring noise-cancelling headphones too so he could listen and make notes on the incoming mixes. He worked on the music for ten more days. Then doctors put him on a ventilator to try to save his life. They were surprised by his rapid deterioration and later came to suspect he was among Europe’s first victims of Covid.

“Andy was massively excited about this project,” Mayer says. “It wasn’t of course conceived as a tribute album, but it’s comforting to me that he lived to see artists he hugely admired enthusiastically agreeing to participate, signalling that the admiration was mutual.”

The album’s brilliant artwork was created by artist Damien Hirst, a long-term Gang of Four aficionado.

Details of all of the artists who have contributed to the album and the full track listing will be made available on January 14th, 2021.

The album is being released in a variety of different vinyl, CD and cassette formats featuring different versions of the artwork from Damien Hirst. All formats are available to pre-order now from gangoffour.uk/store, with the strictly limited edition “Dogluxe” double gatefold vinyl version exclusively available there.
