At this stage in the game, the name Whitechapel commands respect. Already sitting on one of the most enviable catalogs in contemporary metal, in 2019 they dropped The Valley, showcasing a confident evolution in their sound and standing as a true landmark release that sets a new standard for the genre. “To me, it was like the stars aligning for us to create our almost perfect record in regard to songwriting, vocal performance, the mix and master, and the artwork,” says guitarist Alex Wade. “We like to look at our albums as chapters of our career, and that is one chapter I will never forget. I think it really solidified that we can embrace a new sound, and if we execute it properly, then the fanbase is going to support and enjoy it.” In 2021, they return with that album’s successor, the mighty Kin, which is an even more dynamic and diverse collection, further advancing the band’s sound into new territory without losing sight of what brought them to this point. “I feel with every album, we learn what worked best on the last one and try to utilize that in our writing. Early in the writing, there was some discussion of the album being like ‘The Valley‘ part II, not literally called that, but in how the songs sound and flow through it. It’s very much a storytelling type record like ‘The Valley‘ was,” adds vocalist Phil Bozeman, “Musically, we just want to create what we vibe with at the given moment. We write music with how we feel and not what is expected of us, while lyrically the idea of continuing from the story of ‘The Valley‘ was always the goal.”

The resulting record explores a lot of sonic and emotional territory, and for the first time, it could be said that a Whitechapel record is as much a rock album as it is a metal one, an assertion Wade agrees with. “It’s still very much a metal album, but there are elements of the record that have more of a rock and open vibe. We really wanted these songs to breathe and have life and to sound bigger than anything we’ve made so far. We have explored more singing on ‘Kin’ too. It wouldn’t make sense to have the majority of the fanbase enjoy that sound and then shy away from it.” This is not to say that the band have lost their hardest edges, with the full-on death metal assault that kicks off both “Lost Boy” and “To The Wolves” as brutal and serrated as extreme metal gets, and while Bozeman explores his wide-ranging singing voice more, he also cuts loose with his trademark roar across the album’s eleven tracks.

Tracking of Kin was predominantly done at guitarist Zach Householder’s home studio with producer Mark Lewis producing his fifth straight Whitechapel album, making for a very comfortable working environment. “Creating records with him has an effortless flow to it, and we can track things pretty quickly and efficiently these days,” says Wade. “Mark has a great ear for giving us unique and complementary guitar and drum tones for the songs we are trying to record.” The tracks were then sent off to David Castillo at Ghostward Studios in Sweden for mixing, with Ted Jensen mastering it in Nashville, TN. Now, having another album they can be as proud of as its predecessor, it stands them in good stead as they look toward the future. “I see more growth and a limitless potential,” says Wade. “I think we found a great formula on ‘The Valley’, and we used that to create another monumental record for our career that I can’t wait for people to hear. We hope to continue to grow our fanbase with this new album, and always seek to move in a positive direction. I’m excited as the pandemic lessens for the touring world to come back to life and to be able to perform these massive songs we have created in the manner they were meant to be heard – live and loud.”

We’re very excited to be back out in the road again this fall. It’s a time of transformation on our planet and our lives in preparation for the rebirth of the approaching solstice. We’re grateful to share this INITIATION with all you Spiritual Soldiers on the frontline helping to bring music back to this fucked up world,” says GEMINI SYNDROME vocalist Aaron Nordstrom.

Drummer Brian Steele Medina continues, “We love nothing more than performing and creating a sacred space for transmutation with our brothers and sisters. Now more than ever, it feels like everything is trying to pull us apart and perpetuate the illusion that we are separate. That we are not ONE. It’s all bullshit. Give us your pandemics, your Pentagon UFO videos, and your barriers… It’s all fucking noise, but we’re louder and we will rise above it all.”

Direct support on the tour will be split between Rochester, New York’s Ovtlier, who will be on the first half of the tour (Oct. 28 – Nov. 13), and Sacramento, California’s Oh! The Horror, who will join the run for the second half of the dates (Nov. 14 – 27). Additional support comes from pop-punk rock powerhouse Pushing Veronica, and New Jersey hard rock wrecking machine Them Damn Kings.

3rd Degree – The Raising is the long awaited, mind bending final chapter of GEMINI SYNDROME’s debut trilogy of albums; the first being 2013’s Lux, and the second being 2016’s Memento Mori (which hit #1 on Billboard Heatseakers Album Chart and spawned five singles). But whereas those first two albums dealt with the painful struggles of life and death, 3rd Degree – The Raising celebrates the extreme rituals of rebirth. Produced by Matt Good (Asking AlexandriaMemphis May FireHollywood Undead) this is undeniably the heaviest, and darkest album of the band’s career; featuring the singles “Die With Me,” “IDK,” “Abandoned,” “Broken Reflection” and “Reintegration.”

“The album is about death and rebirth. Finding your true self and fostering its growth so as to help build the world better than we inherited it,” says Nordstrom. “In the process of this record I made some major life choices. Mainly to stop killing myself slowly with alcohol. Two years without a drink, and a couple near death experiences later, I think I have ample experience to talk about a subject as elusive as death.”

Drummer Brian Steele Medina adds, “The twist to the 3rd and ‘final’ degree, is that it’s not the end at all. Rather, it’s a rebirth contingent upon our growth and lessons learned from the suffering of our past mistakes. A spiritual growth that can only be attained through baptism by fire. A metaphorical, yet very real resurrection — THE RAISING.”

Nordstrom continues, “Our hope is that through sharing our experiences, lessons learned, and battles overcome, that we can help others to examine their own consciousness. Their role in the world in its almost infinite capacity, and to help remind each other that we are ALL in this together. We are a family, and when we are United in our commonality, we can achieve things worthy of the attention of the GODS. If you want to change the world, quietly go to work on yourself.”

GEMINI SYNDROME spent the better part of 2018-2019 writing 3rd Degree – The Raising, the final installment of their long planned three album trilogy. They retreated to Brian Steele Medina’s Las Vegas home studio, where they meticulously crafted song after song, relentlessly reworking and rearranging the musical arrangements until they were fully satisfied. After an exhaustive writing process, GEMINI SYNDROME relocated to Good Sounds Studio in Tempe, AZ, where producer Matt Good would help realize the collection of songs. Medina recalls, “We absolutely loved working with Matt and he completely understood where we wanted to take this album creatively and what it was going to take to bring the third chapter of this trilogy to light. Our actual collective blood, sweat and tears went into its creation.”

“It was a long, treacherous road to get here,” continues Nordstrom. “First working out an insane amount of songs before arriving in Arizona to record with Matt Good, and then writing a slew more while in the actual recording process, we approached this album with high intentions to evolve musically and internally as people. But then, once we had finally finished everything, and were ready to start releasing new music… everything was put on hold due to the global pandemic.”

3rd Degree – The Raising is the first album to feature guitarist “Meegs” Rascón (formerly of Coal Chamber).

To date, five singles have been released from 3rd Degree – The Raising: “Abandoned,” “Reintegration,” “IDK,” “Broken Reflection” and the currently Top 30 Active Rock Radio hit “Die With Me.” Currently four of the five singles feature visually stunning videos created by director Brian Cox (Bring Me The HorizonThe StrutsStarset).

GEMINI SYNDROME is Aaron Nordstrom (vocals, keyboards), Brian Steele Medina (drums, programming), Alessandro “AP” Paveri (bass), Meegs Rascón (guitar) and Nicholas Paul Arnold (touring guitar).

Tremonti – Marching In Time | Album Review

The last 18+ months have been difficult on pretty much everyone, but one might argue that adversity can sometimes produce the best art. I’d say that is potentially the case with Tremonti’s latest offering Marching In Time. Due to drop tomorrow on Napalm Records, Tremonti’s fifth album may just be the salve on much of our collective frustrations.

Just like A Dying Machine before it, Marching In Time can surely be considered a concept album with a lot to say about the present state of the world. But while reflection is to be expected, where I think Mark Tremonti truly delivers here is his ability to prove that he is not just a rock and metal guitarist. From the high-octane opener of “A World Away” to the soft ballad “Not Afraid To Lose,” Tremonti showcases incredible vocal range and outstanding growth as a band.

Produced by steadfast collaborator, Michael “Elvis” Baskette, Marching In Time is a hard rock album leaning heavy on cathartic sing-along melodies and beautiful songwriting. Clocking in at just 59 minutes, Marching In Time can feel a little short at times, but the replay-ability is ridiculously high. I’ve had the album on a semi-permanent loop for the past couple of weeks and with each listen, my appreciation grows. It is just that damn good.

Sure, there are stand-outs, but let’s face it, there are really no skippable songs here. And as for faves, I definitely find myself returning to “If Not For You,” “Let That Be Us”, “Would You Kill” and the seven-minute title track “Marching In Time” as the major melodic earworms on this album.

On a whole, as someone who’s appreciated Mark Tremonti’s work since the days of Creed, I’m absolutely thrilled with this newest offering. It’s such a perfect balance of the heaviness Tremonti has become known for, with the melodic songwriting often found in Alter Bridge. I can’t wait to hear some of these songs on the live stage.

Pick up Marching In Time here.

Track listing for Marching In Time
1.    A World Away

Anberlin Brings Optimism to Montclair, NJ | Photos

After two cancelled tours, Anberlin is finally back out on the road. The band hit the stage at the Montclair, NJ historical Wellmont Theater this Friday, September 17th with a renewed passion and energy that was evidently reciprocated by every loyal fan in that audience.

I have had the pleasure to attend most of Anberlin’s local shows since I discovered them back in 2014, and the pattern has always been the same: positive vibes and a whole lot of fun. That hasn’t changed. I was admittedly concerned to hear that frontman Stephen Christian had been sick with Covid a couple of months ago, but watching him perform Friday night, I totally forgot all about it. He not only delivered his usual high-energy performance – not once stopping still any longer than a few seconds at a time – but also sounded great. That held note during “The Unwinding Cable Car” was enough to give me chills and I don’t think I was the only one.

The tour continues tonight in Nashville, TN and will wrap up in Atlanta, GA on September 24. It’s a short run, but I can’t imagine Anberlin will be away for too long.

The band has been playing a brand new song, “Two Graves” and has teased that they’ve been hard at work in the studio, with five songs already down, and a few more to follow once they return. We can probably expect an album announcement in the next few months.

I’m excited to see where Anberlin takes us next.

SATELLITE CITI Talk Making “Reaper”, Latest Album Fear Tactics, More

Interview with Satellite Citi talking about their newly released music video for “Reaper”, latest album Fear Tactics, plans for a graphic novel, and more.

SATELLITE CITI Talk New Music Video “Reaper”, Latest Album Fear Tactics, More

Discussion Topics:
-New music video for “Reaper” using the same diner as Ghost’s “Rats”.
-Making an album and music video during a pandemic.
-New graphic novel “Space Walker” and tied in EP.
-Who their dream collaborations would be with.
-New album Fear Tactics about mental health.

“Reaper” Music Video

After giving several tempting teases with a few singles released in the past year, the on-the-rise L.A.-based hard rock duo Satellite Citi will self-release their anticipated new full-length album Fear Tactics on September 3 – a follow-up to their acclaimed 2018 debut EP Negative Space.

Helmed by producer Brad Wood (Smashing Pumpkins, Placebo, Liz Phair, Touche Amore), Fear Tactics sonically features a wide range of inspiration from Black Sabbath to Muse to Halestorm. And the message of the album thematically centers around the importance of mental health, while also representing the band’s own struggles of coping with fear and anxiety, even more apparent in today’s culture.

“Musically, Fear Tactics is a hard rock record and undoubtedly heavier than our previous work. We strive to find a good balance between bringing back guitar riffs, and having memorable vocal melodies,” says the band.

As Huffington Post has declared of the band, “Satellite Citi are on the road to delivering audiences with music that tackles important issues that our society is facing today.”

Their latest singles highlight this focal point for the band. Released in May, “Empath” is centered around the five stages of grief – Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance – and aimed to help end the stigma surrounding mental health. The acoustic version of the song premiered via MXDWN here: https://music.mxdwn.com/2021/06/11/news/mxdwn-premiere-satellite-citi-shine-a-light-on-mental-health-in-new-video-for-empath/

In late 2020, Satellite Citi also released “Antibody,” featuring Crobot’s Brandon Yeagley, dedicated to the people of Armenia and bringing awareness to the latest attacks on the country beginning in late September 2020 that killed hundreds of innocent civilians and displaced thousands more. See the evocative music video premiered by Loudwire here: https://loudwire.com/satellite-citi-antibody-video/

The band, featuring drummer/vocalist Anna Gevorkian and guitarist Shaunt Sulahian, are both Armenian-Americans born and raised in Los Angeles. They first launched Satellite Citi in 2015 with the eloquent track “Rock Bottom” to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Fear Tactics continues their promising trajectory.

When I sit on my couch and play my guitar, I play the same things you hear on the instrumental records. It’s honest. It’s real. It’s not a façade. This is how I play. This is what I love to do.” He continues “I have such an appreciation for Dave, and I love his voice, guitar playing and songwriting. And he kills it on “Que Pasa. It was such a joy to have him on this track.

As evidenced by the latest slab of sinister sounds, JOHN 5, who moved to Hollywood as a teen to pursue his rock n’ roll dreams, follows his artistic muse wherever it leads. SINNER is ten tracks of pure JOHN 5, summoned with the same mix of vibrant energy and passionate emotion beloved by fans of his work as guitarist for Rob Zombie, David Lee Roth and many more. SINNER is ten tracks full of hooks, melody, and thick guitar-driven groove. “Que Pasa” is just the first taste of what’s to come from the legendary guitarist on his latest full-length.

Fever 333 Return To The Road At Blue Ridge Rock Fest

A fever returned to Virginia.

At their first performance back in roughly two years due to the pandemic, Fever 333 took to the stage on day two of Blue Ridge Rock Fest. After two songs, Jason Butler eluded to Stephen Harrison having a semi-homecoming as he originates from the south. The hills baked in the heat and dust definitely had a feeling of the deep south despite being in Virginia.

The crowd was wild for this demonstration. Riled up by the band, you could tell that the remaining energy was spent at Fever 333’s performance. This may not have been a true homecoming, but in some ways, it did feel that the group had returned to their favorite place: on stage. The photos and TikTok below will not do justice to just how animated and chaotic everyone is on stage. This was my third time seeing the band live and I somehow forgot just much Jason slides around from side to side, unable to stay still for two seconds.
