Selling out The National in Richmond, VA has become difficult for alternative bands (and any band really), but Slowdive achieved the feat by packing in people up to the back of the balcony. Everything was alive in Richmond as the shoegaze legends performed for over 90 minutes. After the impressive success of last year’s Everything Is Alive, Slowdive proved that there is still a diehard audience for this form of music.
Opening with Everything Is Alive’s “shanty” set the tone as many of the tracks felt extended for jam sessions and setting the mood for a rainy November night in Richmond. It was the type of performance that had everyone in attendance wearing a slight smile on their face as instruments were played endlessly with little to no downtime through the set.
This will most likely be my final concert to shoot for 2024, and I’m glad I closed out my year with such a strong performance. Slowdive sounded better live than I could have imagined. I had several people message me at this show saying they were jealous of getting to see Slowdive live, and now after seeing them for the first time, I understand why anyone would be jealous for missing out on a group like this.

The return of one of the world’s biggest bands, a new singer, and with an album that everyone will have a strong opinion on. From Zero ranges from original old-school sounding tracks like “Heavy Is The Crown”, to completely different sounding material from past Linkin Park like ‘Over Each Other”. It’s when you get to the deep cuts that you notice a few things. The instrumentals while solid, are never as catchy or striking as I’d wish. Lyrically, the content is based around Linkin Park as an entity and the band’s struggles which is a unique take for the group but hard to connect with. Tracks like “Two Faced” and “Casualty” are lyrically disjointed and is the early 2000’s angst done almost as a cliche, while “The Emptiness Machine” and closer “Good Things Go” have some real depth. From Zero works as a Linkin Park album with some high points but mostly just songs that exist to continue the band’s legacy with a new chapter, by defining themselves and expressing how hard it is to be LInkin Park. The new version of Linkin Park isn’t spectacular, but it’s also not bad, and a band could do worse starting from zero. 6/10

Linkin Park: From Zero To Uncertainty
“Linkin Park is set to make a significant return to the music scene with their highly anticipated album, From Zero, scheduled for release on November 15, 2024. This marks the band’s first studio album since 2017’s One More Light, and it comes with a new chapter in their history. From Zero introduces Emily Armstrong of Dead Sara as the band’s new co-lead vocalist, alongside Mike Shinoda, and features Colin Brittain on drums, replacing Rob Bourdon. The album’s title holds a double meaning, referencing both the band’s original name, Xero, and this new beginning.
Reviews of From Zero highlight the album’s ability to balance innovation with the band’s signature sound. Tracks like “The Emptiness Machine,” “Heavy Is the Crown,” and “Over Each Other” showcase the band’s continued ability to craft compelling and heavy songs, with “Casualty” being noted as one of the heaviest in their career.
The album also features moments of vocal harmony and experimentation, such as the 22-second intro “From Zero (Intro),” which draws comparisons to The Beach Boys and Big Big Train. Other songs, like “Cut the Bridge,” evoke memories of classic Linkin Park tracks like “Bleed It Out,” while “Good Things Go” stands out for its symbolic lyrics and the powerful vocal blend between Armstrong and Shinoda.
Linkin Park’s From Zero is not just a new album but a rebirth, signaling the band’s determination to move forward while honoring their past. With a world tour already underway, including dates in the United States, Europe, and South America, fans are eagerly anticipating the live performances of these new tracks. Pre-order From Zero now and be part of Linkin Park’s new era in music.” (Perplexity)

My Chemical Romance’s The Black Parade
Following the success of their independently released debut album and major label breakout sophomore album that has been certified 3x Platinum, My Chemical Romance skyrocketed into the mainstream with their 2006 album The Black Parade, which peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard U.S. Top Rock Albums and U.S. Top Tastemaker Albums charts. Its leading single, “Welcome To The Black Parade,” has been certified 5x Platinum, while the album itself has earned 4x Platinum status.
Hidden wisdom, long-lost secrets, and esoteric knowledge—with ‘Arcana,‘ the frontrunners of symphonic metal, EPICA, herald a new chapter in their two-decade-long band history. This is the band’s first new release since their chart-topping album Omega and their collaboration EP The Alchemy Project. It offers a glimpse into the band’s future music, coming in 2025.
“Arcana guides you through the universal stages of spiritual evolution in life. It leads the way to a higher consciousness and spiritual self-awareness,” the band comments. “Writing this song was a spontaneous effort, so it came together quickly, which felt so natural that it wrote itself. The music contains classic Epica elements but has some vibes that might remind you of 80s alternative rock or modern metal.”
The single is now available on all streaming platforms. It also includes ‘The Ghost in Me‘, a special collaboration with the Netherlands’ most popular theme park, de ‘Efteling’.
The music video, directed by Remko Tielemans, is now premiering on YouTube:
The song has already made its live debut at the band’s monumental ‘Symphonic Synergy’ shows in Amsterdam this September, and fans in Latin America will have the chance to be the next to hear it live at two shows that EPICA will perform exclusively with a full orchestra and choir.

Metallica is nominated for “Screaming Suicide” from their 2023 album 72 Seasons, while Judas Priest is recognized for “Crown of Horns”. Gojira’s powerful performance of “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça Ira!)”, which gained widespread attention during the Olympics, is also in the running. Knocked Loose’s intense collaboration with Poppy on “Suffocate” and Spiritbox’s haunting “Cellar Door” round out the nominees.
In the “Best Rock Performance” category, a diverse range of artists is represented. The Beatles, with their historic track “Now and Then” featuring John Lennon’s original vocals enhanced by Artificial Intelligence, are nominated alongside contemporary rock acts. “As I Lay Dying is facing a significant transformation in 2024, with the departure of key band members, including guitarist Ken Susi, bassist Ryan Neff, and drummer Nick Pierce. This exodus has left frontman Tim Lambesis and guitarist Phil Sgrosso as the only remaining members of the band. In response to this upheaval, Lambesis acknowledged the “toxic atmosphere” that contributed to the departures, revealing that he and Sgrosso no longer aligned on personal, creative, or financial matters. Despite these challenges, Lambesis expressed a commitment to moving forward with a new lineup for As I Lay Dying, indicating that the band plans to continue its musical journey. The band’s eighth studio album, titled Through Storms Ahead, is set to release on November 15, 2024, suggesting that while the lineup may change, their dedication to creating music remains strong. This situation highlights the complexities within the band and raises questions about its future direction as they navigate these internal conflicts and member changes.” (Perplexity)

As long as there are rock songs, there will be awful cover songs from bands not knowing what they are doing. This video looks at 10 TRASH Rock Cover Songs.
“When it comes to rock cover songs, not all attempts at reimagining classics end in success. In fact, some covers are so misguided that they become infamous for their sheer audacity and lack of finesse. One notable example is the ill-fated cover of “Last Resort” by Papa Roach, a song that, while popular in its original form, can be particularly challenging to reinterpret. However, there are other covers that stand out for their egregious missteps.
Motley Crue’s attempt at covering the Beastie Boys’ iconic “Fight For Your Right” is a prime illustration of this. Known for their punk-infused energy and rebellious spirit, the Beastie Boys’ original is a staple of 80s hip-hop and rock fusion. Motley Crue’s version, however, strips the song of its original grit and humor, replacing it with a glam-rock aesthetic that feels out of place and lacking in authenticity. This cover, along with others like Duran Duran’s disastrous take on Public Enemy’s “911 Is a Joke” and Limp Bizkit’s cringeworthy rendition of George Michael’s “Faith,” highlights the risks and pitfalls of covering beloved songs without a deep understanding of their original context and spirit.
For fans of rock music, these covers serve as cautionary tales about the importance of respecting the source material and the delicate art of reinterpretation. Whether it’s the misjudged genre shifts or the lack of emotional resonance, these bad rock cover songs remind us that not every attempt at paying homage ends in a memorable or enjoyable listening experience. If you’re curious about more examples of these musical missteps, exploring lists of the worst rock cover songs can provide a mix of entertainment and educational insight into what not to do when covering a classic.” (Perplexity)

“In a dramatic turn of events, the metalcore band As I Lay Dying has been hit by a significant exodus of members over the past week. Bassist and clean vocalist Ryan Neff was the first to announce his departure on October 19, 2024, citing personal and professional reasons after two years with the band. This was swiftly followed by the exit of tour manager Alex Kendrick on October 22. On October 24, guitarist Ken Susi and drummer Nick Pierce also revealed they were leaving the band, with both members expressing that their personal morals had been tested to a breaking point. Susi, formerly of Unearth, and Pierce emphasized their gratitude for the support they received but felt compelled to distance themselves from the band to maintain their personal health and integrity. These departures have led to the cancellation of As I Lay Dying’s European tour, leaving only frontman Tim Lambesis and guitarist Phil Sgrosso remaining in the band as they prepare for the release of their new album, Through Storms Ahead, on November 15.” (Perplexity)
