The heavy metal ‘n’ roll dark madcap visionaries collectively known as AVATAR — vocalist Johannes Eckerström (vocals), guitarists Jonas Jarlsby and Tim Öhrström, bassist Henrik Sandelin, and drummer John Alfredsson — have shared another new song. Today, the band has released “Cruel and Unusual.”
“It feels self-evident,” the band states about the track. “Violent thoughts channeled through violent riffs, demented thoughts driven by a sick groove. It’s simply a very sexy song.”
Earlier this fall, Avatar, who are known to smash the boundaries between band, theater troupe, and cinematic masterminds with a series of celebrated albums and videos, and the immersive world of Avatar Country, a fantastical land where metal rules supreme, released four new songs. Avatar also previously announced they signed to Thirty Tigers and have launched their own Black Waltz Records imprint.

Thanks to everyone who tuned in live on Twitch for the live stream. Hopefully, you all have a great New Year and achieve everything you set out to accomplish in 2022. I know that 2021 wasn’t as bright as we all had hoped coming out of 2020, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make the next year better and good things can’t happen in the future.
I’m currently working on the Top 10 Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs Of 2021 video. It should be up in less than a week. After that, I’m strategizing how I want to go forward with videos and live streams. I want to grow YouTube to 100K subs sooner than later and I also want Twitch to do better in overall numbers. Some changes will need to happen in order to get there.
In the meantime, I’ll try to keep everyone updated on what’s going on for the main YouTube channel. Whether I stop doing regular album reviews OR work on more think-piece videos, I want to be able to grow the channel. Looking back at the past year, I feel some changes need to be made in order to get there (that and the YouTube algorithm to stop punishing me). If you have any suggestions for upcoming videos, let me know through Discord or Twitter. Here’s hoping for the best for everyone in 2022.

The Billboard year-end charts are out and just like the past few years with rock, there has been a lot of repetition for the FM radio darlings as well as bands that have already been established for decades. I can honestly say though that there were some newer names throughout the list and that was a good surprise. I hope that FM/Satellite/Online radio continues to show light on newer acts. Along with that, I’ll take 2021’s list over 2020’s any day as I feel it was stronger and had better variety.
We’ll be making a video for the main YouTube channel talking about the Top 10 songs of the year-end list so subscribe to get notified when that is out (within the next few weeks).
The road to 100K subscribers continues so here’s hoping the channel can continue to grow quickly over the next few months. We’ll have more streams coming on Twitch as well over the holiday break so check those out when we go live. Other than that, thank you all for the continued support for the channel, Patreon, Twitch, and everything else. Have a great holiday if you are celebrating, and be careful out there as we are still in the middle of the health crisis.
There was a massive amount of music that came out in 2021 through rock, alternative, metal, indie, punk, etc. This video takes a look at the Top 10 BEST Albums Of 2021. Click below to watch the video for a full breakdown or scroll below to see a brief description for each album ranked.
Top 10 Best Albums Of 2021
#10: Rise Against – Nowhere Generation
Tim Mcilrath sounds as powerful as ever and the killer drumming from Brandon Barnes drives Nowhere Generation. This album revitalized the band’s focus on socio-political stances as well as the message to our current generation how we are going NOWHERE. But somehow, Rise Against makes it easier to be a part of this Nowhere Generation and the kids that no one wants while having some anthems to go with how we feel.
#9: Ice Nine Kills – Welcome To Horrorwood: The Silver Scream 2
Ice Nine Kills outdid themselves and put together a great collection of songs tributing Pet Cemetery, Resident Evil, American Psycho, and more. This is a follow-up album that hammers in the notion that music is supposed to be fun. Ice Nine Kills have come in trying to do something unique and enjoy the music they make. Wild creativity matched with the heaviness INK can provide, Horrorwood is the scary destination that I’d gladly buy a ticket to visit.
#8: Trivium – In The Court Of The Dragon
Trivium is a shining example of how to use forced downtime to your advantage, and In The Court Of The Dragon is another entry in Trivium’s impressive streak of deep and remarkable albums over the past few years. Is Dungeons and Dragons Metal going to become more popular now? I’m not sure. But I do know that playing this album in the background of a D&D session will only make the session that much better.
#7: Spiritbox – Eternal Blue
Arguably the most buzz in the rock and metal world in 2021 for a newer group went to Spiritbox, and rightfully so as Eternal Blue is something refreshing. With Courtney Duplantier and Mike Stringer returning to the music world, I truly feel Spiritbox has become the next big thing to happen in heavy music. Replay value for days and as energetic as it was when the album was released, Eternal Blue satisfied a lot of people who had insanely high expectations.
#6: Converge & Chelsea Wolfe – Bloodmoon I
Bloodmoon I is difficult to describe if you aren’t familiar with Converge or Chelsea Wolfe but this album packs a full impact punch to the gut with how powerful and tense the music gets through long tracks. Bloodmoon puts you in a trance and the music has a massive buildup and you hear so much of that tension rising until the aggression boils over. Converge & Chelsea Wolfe make something as terrifying as it is engaging and inviting.
#5: Epica – Omega
Slow and theatrical, fast and bombastic, Epica does it all. Everything about Omega and the live stream Omega Alive deserves some respect as this isn’t just an album, it’s an experience. Simone Simons’ singing is still as breathtaking as ever. Symphonic metal does NOT get the attention it deserves in the metal community and Epica’s massive entry is more proof of that. From death growls to the operatic soprano, Epica brings it all to the table.
#4: Lingua Ignota – Sinner Get Ready
Lingua Ignota is on the verge of becoming a massive name, not just a critical darling. The music in Sinner Get Ready proves that she knows how to dominate as the voice of Kristin Hayter is as haunting as it is impressive. At almost a full hour of music, not a second feels wasted as every moment either builds to something beautiful or is used to shock your senses. Sinner Get Ready will knock you off your feet if you aren’t prepared.
#3: Gojira – Fortitude
It was roughly five years between Gojira albums and for a band this fierce and heavy going a bit more groove-filled, it was music to my ears. Whether it was shouting along with “Another World” or the amazing rhythm in “Amazonia”, Fortitude is low and thick with Joe Duplantier growling and screaming his head off. As time goes on Gojira proves they are a group that doesn’t lose a step and Fortitude follows that idea.
#2: CHVRCHES – Screen Violence
CHVRCHES leaning into a deeper alternative and guitar-driven style reinvigorated my appreciation for the group. Screen Violence stepped everything up. Lauren Mayberry changes her tone and adapts to a variety of expressions. This album sets a new bar for what CHVRCHES can create and I want to hear what comes next. A band this creative can always surprise us. Also, feel free to bring back Robert Smith because “How Not To Drown” was great.
#1: Turnstile – GLOW ON
Saying that Turnstile is redefining what hardcore can be does not do justice to how many styles the band incorporates in GLOW ON. Fantastic bass and rhythm along with a strong and well mixed vocal performance from Brendan Yates. You’ll be singing along after one song. It’s that infectious. Fair warning: GLOW ON is a “jump around the house and stage dive off of furniture” sounding album so make sure nothing breakable is in reach before playing this one. Once you have everything secured and safe listening space, play this album loud. Loud enough for the neighbors to hear it, and then invite them in to jump around with you. They’ll love GLOW ON also.
Honorable Mentions: Bo Burnham – Inside Creeper – American Noir (EP) Poppy – EAT (EP) Starset – Horizons Tremonti – Marching In Time Whitechapel – Kin

JOHN 5 dropped his new solo album, SINNERback in October, the album was highlighted by the release of singles “Que Pasa” featuring Dave Mustaine and “Land of The Misfit Toys” which was accompanied by a cinematic music video set in 1980, that tells the tale of a young John Lowery who stumbles into a haunted house and becomes possessed by an entity. This entity gradually turns him into the guitar shredding, face-painted icon we all now know as JOHN 5.
SINNER is ten tracks of pure JOHN 5, summoned with the same mix of vibrant energy and passionate emotion beloved by fans of his work as guitarist for Rob Zombie, David Lee Roth and many more. The albumwas produced and mixed by Barry Pointer at Riott House Studio in North Hollywood. Drums were engineered by ex-Guns N’ Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke at Redrum Recording in Los Angeles. To date, the album has clocked up over 500,000 streams and 502,000 YouTube views to date. Find the album on streaming services here.

The Pretty Reckless are thrilled to return to the road this spring with more than three dozen shows across the US, Europe, and the UK.
The extensive outing, which marks their first run of dates since 2016–2017’s Who You Selling For tour, kicks off with a pair of sold out headline shows at Brooklyn Made on March 22 and 23. On April 1, the New York City band embarks on a 24-date run across North America with Shinedown, before heading across the Atlantic for shows throughout the summer, including festival appearances at Britain’s Download Festival, Germany’s Rock im Park and Rock am Ring, and the Netherlands’ Pinkpop as well as direct support to Foo Fighters in Berlin. The Pretty Reckless’ long-awaited tour follows the release of their No. 1-debuting and fourth studio album, Death By Rock And Roll.
Ahead of the tour, one of the band’s most popular titles, Going To Hell, will return to vinyl.
The album, which includes three No. 1 singles, including the platinum-selling “Heaven Knows,” “Messed Up World,” and “Follow Me Down,” lands in stores on February 11, 2022, and is available for pre-order today.
Originally released in 2014, Going To Hell marks the second studio album from The Pretty Reckless, which consists of Taylor Momsen (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Ben Phillips (lead guitar, backing vocals), Mark Damon (bass), and Jamie Perkins (drums). Following the release of 2010’s Light Me Up, plus nearly two years of non-stop touring, the band entered Hoboken, New Jersey’s Water Music with producer Kato Khandwala (Paramore, Blondie, My Chemical Romance). But Hurricane Sandy had other ideas. In October 2012, the storm raged through the Eastern Seaboard, destroying the studio and forcing the group to re-record much of their new material. The album’s title track chronicled the devastating period.
Despite the initial setbacks, the band released their sophomore album in March 2014 to massive commercial success. Going To Hell debuted at No.5 on the Billboard 200, marking The Pretty Reckless’ first Top 10 album on the chart. Abroad, the LP fared equally as well, debuting at No.8 in the UK and No. 5 in Canada. Going To Hell was also embraced by the press, with Rolling Stone raving that the album “rages with the upbeat, beat-wise humor that hard rock has suppressed ever since grunge.” Revolver praised, “Momsen leaves most chick rockers in her rearview mirror thanks to her greatest assets — her daring arrangements and well-crafted tunes” while Kerrang! declared, “If Taylor is indeed going to Hell, at least she’s released a truly great album on the way down.”
The album also spawned several best-selling singles, including the anthemic “Heaven Knows,” the rollicking “Follow Me Down,” and the guitar-driven earworm “Messed Up World.” All three songs topped Billboard‘s Mainstream Rock Songs chart, while just two years later, the band set the record for the most No. 1 singles on the chart by a female-fronted band, thanks to “Take Me Down” (off 2016’s Who You Selling For). The Pretty Reckless continued to defend their title with the release of their latest LP, which delivered three more No.1 hits: title track “Death By Rock And Roll,” “And So It Went” (Feat. Tom Morello), and “Only Love Can Save Me Now” (Feat. Kim Thayil and Matt Cameron of Soundgarden).
Released in February, Death By Rock And Roll found the band reeling after two tragic deaths. The first was Soundgarden frontman, Chris Cornell, who tragically passed away while on tour with The Pretty Reckless. The second was the band’s longtime collaborator, Kato Khandwala, whose signature phrase inspired the album’s title. The album, which paid homage to both men, allowed the group to process their grief while taking a more vulnerable and reflective tone in their writing. Marking The Pretty Reckless’ Fearless Records debut, Death By Rock And Roll was welcomed warmly by audiences and critics alike — debuting at No.1 on several charts including Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart and earning glowing reviews from a variety of outlets, including PEOPLE!, V Magazine, and SPIN, who hailed the album as “a stunner; a dozen stellar songs that are at once reverential, referential and intensely personal.”
