Beartooth Brings the Heat to Richmond, VA

It felt surreal to be back in a venue to see Beartooth perform in Richmond, VA on Friday, April 22, 2022. Beartooth was the last concert performance I saw before the world shut down back in January 2020, so seeing them again felt like things were coming full circle.

Beartooth opened up with a large sheet that covered the stage and their logo spotlighted right in the center. A deep-voiced boomed over the sound system, commanding the attention of everyone in attendance. Suddenly, frontman Caleb Shomo was illuminated behind the sheet; only his silhouette was shown, but the crowd was more than ready. As soon as the sheet dropped and the music began, confetti cannons fired above the crowd to their song Below; confetti would continue to rain over the crowd for the remainder of the set. Almost immediately the most pits formed, and the crowd surfing began.

The energy from Beartooth fed into the crowd and the crowd welcomed it with open arms. The stage presence was one to be reckoned with and Beartooth didn’t hold back. Along with the momentum that continued throughout the set, there were a number of details that really sold the show, such as the video board set up behind the band that displayed various video visuals for each song, as well as the spectacular light production that accompanied.

Included on The Below Tour Part 2 were bands Silverstein, The Devil Wears Prada, and ERRA. I had never seen any of these bands live but was pleasantly surprised at how much energy each band brought to the Richmond crowd that night. The crowd never faltered in their momentum and excitement for this lineup even as the evening progressed, and the concertgoers grew in numbers. With live performances in full swing again, it’s incredible to see just how excited crowds are for all bands on lineups and not just the headliners. The tour will conclude Tuesday, May 3 in Louisville, KY, with a final date in Beartooth’s hometown of Columbus, OH on Saturday, August 6, 2022.

Mark Tremonti Releases Video for Sinatra Classic “Fly Me To The Moon”

On the heels of the announcement last month that he is releasing a collection of Frank Sinatra covers to support NDSS (National Down Syndrome Society), GRAMMY® Award Winning musician, producer, author and founding member of the hard rock bands Alter Bridge, Creed and Tremonti, Mark Tremonti is releasing another music video from his Tremonti Sings Sinatra album. The video for “Fly Me To The Moon” – shot in all black & white – documents Mark in the studio performing the timeless Sinatra classic with members of Frank’s original band.

The video for “Fly Me To The Moon” can be seen here:

Tremonti Sings Sinatra – Mark’s most-ambitious and challenging project to date – is scheduled for release on May 27th. Mark has partnered with National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) through his new charity initiative called Take A Chance For Charity and proceeds from the album will go to support NDSS and the work they do to advocate for and support individuals with Down syndrome and their families. Mark and his family were blessed to welcome their first daughter Stella in March 2021 – who was born with Down syndrome – and the idea for the project was born. A video sharing the story of Take A Chance For Charity can be seen here.

Mark Tremonti has come together with surviving members of Frank Sinatra’s orchestra, creating new takes on some of the classics and some deeper cuts from Frank’s catalog. From the opening horns and piano of “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” to final vocal outro of “All Or Nothing At All,” Mark Tremonti showcases the signature vocal approach and exemplary musicianship that made Sinatra’s work timeless. To see his vision through, Mark reached out to Frank Sinatra’s musical director Mike Smith who collected as many remaining members as possible of Frank’s touring band to record the music for Tremonti Sings Sinatra. Popular standards like “I’ve Got The World On A String,” “My Way” and “That’s Life” find new life in the hands of these incredible musicians. Mark Tremonti – known for his guitar work that has won him countless accolades – leaves the instrument behind and just sings on the 14-track album. The artwork on the album cover is an original painting that Tremonti created especially for this project. A video for “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” can be seen here. A recently announced live performance of Tremonti Sings Sinatra with members of Frank’s orchestra on May 14th in Orlando, FL at The Abbey sold out in days.

About Take A Chance For Charity: Take A Chance For Charity is a new charity focused on giving artists / actors / athletes / anyone with a platform the ability to get out of their comfort zone. The idea is to have people get out of the genre they are known for to raise funds / awareness for the charity of their choice. We want people to have the most fun they ever had while raising money for charity. An actor can sing, an athlete can dance, a musician can perform a song out of their musical genre – any artistic interpretation. This gives participants the ability to do something out of the ordinary – in fact extraordinary – all in the name of charity. Tremonti Sings Sinatra will be the first release for the cause, the recipient being NDSS.

Dance Gavin Dance had to deal with the heartbreaking news last week that they’d lost their bassist and dear friend, Tim Feerick. They issued the following statement in the wake of the news

“This past week has been the most challenging time in Dance Gavin Dance’s history. On Thursday, April 14th, we found out that we had lost Tim. While he was the bassist in the band, he was also our brother and best friend. Losing him is devastating. We were preparing to meet up this past weekend in Sacramento for a photoshoot and then rehearse this week ahead of Swanfest and the subsequent tour, when we heard the devastating news that he was no longer with us.

After the initial shock and sadness, it wasn’t long after that we were faced with some challenging decisions about the immediate future and our upcoming plans. After many internal discussions with our team and, most importantly, Tim’s family, we have decided to perform this year’s Swanfest and do the subsequent tour in honor and dedication to Tim. We will also move ahead with the announcement of our forthcoming album, later this week.

The main factor of this decision came from knowing who Tim was as a person and what he would have wanted. We are confident that he would be very disappointed if we were to postpone or cancel these dates. We received further affirmation of this from Tim’s parents, with their encouragement to perform these dates. In addition, music is our way of healing, and we, as the remaining members, desire to be together during this time and perform on stage to our fans the songs that he helped create. While no one can ever replace Tim or what he has brought to the band, we have asked Sergio Medina, a close friend to all of us and someone who has worked with Tim, to perform the bass duties for the upcoming shows.

We are planning a memorial to Tim at Swanfest, and the entire festival will be in dedication to him, as will all the following shows on the tour. We look forward to celebrating his life with the fans. While this is an immense tragedy for everyone that loved and respected Tim, he would want everyone to come out, be together and enjoy the music. RIP Tim.”

Dorothy Raises Hell in Montclair, NJ | Photos

Just a week out from the highly anticipated third album, Gifts From the Holy Ghost, Dorothy swaggered onto the stage at Montclair, NJ’s The Wellmont Theater to the cheers of adoring fans. It’s been three years since New Jersey last saw Dorothy on one of our stages, and in that time, Hungarian-born frontwoman Dorothy Martin, traded in her flowy 70’s rock inspired garb for slick leather and chrome and the fans were very much there for it.

With the energy amped up to 11, Dorothy played a solid 12-track rapid-fire rock set with very little downtime. What short moments there were in between songs, Martin spent them by flashing heart-hands at the crowd, always accompanied by a huge smile that showed just how much fun she was having.

While the setlist leaned heavily on the band’s 2016 Rock Is Dead, Dorothy did give us a little taste of what’s coming our way in Gifts From the Holy Ghost with “What’s Coming to Me” and “Rest in Peace,” both vocally strong bluesy rock tracks with some serious swagger.

Dorothy Setlist:
01. Down to the Bottom
02. Gun in my Hand
03. Ain’t Our Time to Die
04. What’s Coming to Me
05. Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) cover
06. Rest in Peace
07. Raise Hell
08. After Midnight
09. Medicine Man
10. Flawless
11. Freedom
12. Dark Nights

Dorothy’s tour continues tomorrow night in Boston, MA. The remaining dates are listed below. Be sure to check out the tour and if you do, arrive early enough to catch two great openers.

I, unfortunately, was not early enough and missed the first ten minutes of Classless Act‘s set. While not familiar with the band’s sound, that is a name I’ve been hearing circulating recently so I’m glad I finally had the chance to get acquainted. Even for just a little while. The LA band did a fair job warming up the crowd with a solid offering of metal tracks, including a surprising cover of Guns n’ Roses’ “Civil War.”

Fellow California natives, Joyous Wolf followed with a dizzying 45 minute set of hard rock accompanied by frontman Nick Reese’s trademark acrobatics. Self-proclaimed perfectionists, Joyous Wolf has been working hard to release its debut album, which we should expect sometime this year. In the meantime, the band continues to make soundwaves with high-octane performances.

Anthrax, Black Label Society & Hatebreed Announce Summer Tour

Anthrax Tour

This summer, Anthrax and Black Label Society will bring some of the finest thrash and heavy metal to 24 North American cities when they kick off a five-week tour on Tuesday, July 26 at Van Buren in Phoenix, AZ, wrapping in Philadelphia at the Fillmore on Sunday, August 28.   Both bands will play headline sets.  Hatebreed, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Perseverance album, will Special Guest.  Black Label Society and Anthrax have shared festival stages and one-off shows numerous times, but this marks the very first time these two bands will tour together. Ticket pre-sale details are below.*  The public ticket on-sale starts this Friday at 10:00 AM local time.  Log onto https://www.anthrax.com/tour or http://blacklabelsociety.com for all ticket purchasing information.

Citi is the official card of the Anthrax and Black Label Society Tour.  Citi cardmembers will have access to presale tickets beginning Monday, April 18, at 12:00 PM ET until Thursday, April 21 at 10:00 PM local time through the Citi Entertainment program.  For complete presale details, visit www.citientertainment.com

“Zakk has been a friend and an inspiration to me as a guitar player, songwriter, and beard grower since we met in 1988,” said Anthrax’s Scott Ian.  “We’ve had the privilege to share festival stages with Zakk and BLS around the world, and it’s always been a head-banging mutual admiration society between the two bands. Now we get to share the stage every night on what is easily going to be the heaviest tour of 2022 – the ultimate pounding one-two combination of bands. Oh, and did I mention we’ve got fucking Hatebreed with us as our special guests? Holy crap, it’s going to be the night of 1000 crushing riffs. I can’t wait to see you all on the road.”

The multi Gold and Platinum, six-time GRAMMY-nominated Anthrax spent a good portion of 2021 celebrating the band’s landmark 40th birthday. The card-carrying Big Four members’ anniversary was the subject of an 11-week series of video testimonials from artists like Chuck D., Dave Grohl, Dave Mustaine, Kerry King, Norman Reedus, Rob Zombie, Robert Trujillo, Slash, and others. Anthrax teamed up with Z-2 Comics for the “Among The Living” graphic novel that was inspired by their landmark 1987 album and released their high-end bourbon whiskey, “Anthrax XL.”  But, due to COVID, the one thing Anthrax couldn’t do, was tour, tour, tour, so the band fully intends to extend the celebration with this North American trek. Fans can expect Anthrax – Joey Belladonna/vocals, Scott Ian/rhythm guitar, Frank Bello/bass, Charlie Benante/drums, and Jon Donais/guitar – to draw from all four decades – fan favorites and deep cuts – for their nightly setlist.

Said Black Label Society’s Zakk Wylde, “ANTHRAX is one of The BESTEST LEGENDARY METAL/THRASH BANDS of ALL TIME – I have been buds with SCOTTY, CHARLIE, FRANKIE & JOEY for over 3O years & they are some of the BESTEST people you will meet. JON is The BESTEST new addition ANTHRAX could ask for – HATEBREED are The BESTEST HARDCORE/EXTREME METAL band & BESTEST friends w/ANTHRAX & BLACK LABEL SOCIETY. The ANTHRAX + BLACK LABEL SOCIETY & HATEBREED TOUR is going to be one of the BESTEST TOURS EVER!!”

Everything about Black Label Society begins with the riff from their debut studio album, Sonic Brew (1999), to their critically-acclaimed eleventh studio album, Doom Crew Inc. (2021). A dedicated disciple of Zeppelin, Sabbath, and Deep Purple, frontman Zakk Wylde looks to the massive guitar hooks in classics as guiding lights. Their latest album,Doom Crew Inc., finds larger-than-life guitarist Zakk trading solos and twin-guitar parts with guitarist Dario Lorina, backed by the rumble of longtime bassist John “J.D.” DeServio and powerhouse drummer Jeff Fabb. The GRAMMY-winning frontman has been featured on the cover of Guitar World more than a dozen times in recognition of his work on multi-platinum albums with the iconic Ozzy Osbourne and two decades with Black Label Society, and their chart- topping albums and singles. The stomping, heavy bluesy, recklessly unhinged hard-rock-metal quartet are part invading horde and part traveling carnival, summoning caffeine-fueled cacophony on records and the stage.

Hatebreed remain one of the most relevant and impactful acts in the hard rock and metal scenes.  The Connecticut band is celebrating over 25 years of ruthless breakdowns, pit-stirring anthems, and poignant lyrics across eight albums and consistently sold-out shows.  The band, which has gone from playing basements and backyards to being a featured worldwide attraction on countless festivals and high-profile tours from OzzFest to Warped Tour to Download, recently released Weight of the False Self, via Nuclear Blast.  Weight of the False Self and Hatebreed were described by Forbes as “more relevant than ever in the metal and hardcore communities.”  It was also praised as a “return to their hardcore roots” by Brooklyn Vegan.  The album was deemed “one of their most aggressive to date” by Consequence and “pummeling” by Revolver, while Psychology Today called it “a blazing combination of extreme metal and hardcore punk.”  Hatebreed, nearing a quarter of a billion catalog streams, continue to be one of the most vital bands in the hard rock scene.

“Listen up! It’s gonna be a hot summer!” added Jamey Jasta.  “Anthrax, BLS & Hatebreed will be on your case, in your face & ready to kick you and your father back in place!  See you in the pit.”

Doyle Abominates QXT’s in Newark, NJ

The masters of horror punk, Doyle, brought the Abominate The World As We Die Tour to QXT’s in Newark, NJ this past Friday April 8th. Whenever the opportunity to witness this mega-talented quartet arises, I make sure to attend without any hesitation. The Vegan Beast, Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein, frontman Alex Wolfman Story, along with Wade Murff on drums and Brandon Strate on bass and backup vocals, never disappoint.

Opening metal band Salem’s Childe riled up the crowd and did not let up during their entire set. The group consists of Rob Salem and Aaron Crick on guitars, bassist James Gates, drummer Scott Earley, and vocalist Johnny Oravsky. Their songs were heavy both instrumentally and lyrically, not shying away from serious topics such as the mental health of war veterans. Salem’s Childe is a band full of passion, and it permeates from the stage and into the hearts of fans.

Anticipation clouded over QXT’s at the headliner, however. People everywhere plotting where to stand to witness the abomination about to befall the venue. As I encroached upon the front row, I threw caution to the wind and crammed right up against the monitors. I was up close and personal.

The Vegan Beast himself crossed the stage and overtook the immediate space. While frontman Story appeared in a gimp mask, breaking the silence with his notorious opening scream to Abominator. This clued in the masses to the fact that Doyle was about to shred us all to pieces.

From beginning to end, eyes, ears, and bodies were glued to this band. Doyle has this hypnotic flow that I’ll admit, makes it hard to focus on anything else. My job is to photograph and report back on the concert objectively. Impossible! I find myself singing along mesmerized by everyone on that stage. They are all magnificent musicians and truly do possess the ability to entertain a horde of people with their talent.

Murff behind the drum kit is a sight during the entire performance. The man seems to have at least two extra arms while playing because he turns into a beast and is so much fun to watch. A total powerhouse of a drummer. Though bassist Strate was difficult to see because of the less-than-ideal lighting, it was impossible not to feel his presence. He was producing the perfect baritone notes that balance the rest of the band. He is an obvious key to the sound that we have come to know and love from Doyle.

Is it possible that I may have a bias? Maybe. Did I get stuck right next to the pit and shoved into a fellow photographer? Yes. Did the Wolfman’s sweat spray me in the face mid-performance? I will neither confirm nor deny.

However, hese guys absolutely have their tunes down to a science and are worth the experience of fans in a frenzy. The Abominate The World As We Die Tour may have wrapped up for now, but when they come around again you’ll know where to find me. All their songs are love songs, and you can dance to them if you want to. You just have to be there.

Palisades Release New Single “Reaching Hypercritical” via Rise Records

New Jersey powerhouse Palisades have today released their latest single Reaching Hypercritical and the accompanying visualizer. The single is the title track from the band’s forthcoming album ‘Reaching Hypercritical’ out on July 22 via Rise Records. Speaking on today’s release, vocalist Brandon Elgar shares:

“’Reaching Hypercritical’ is based around my experience with therapy. I learned that I, and other people who struggle with anxiety, have an “inner bear” inside of us that can sometimes trap us into submission and can keep us from going out into the world and living the best we can. My therapist also told me I have a “hypercritical” thought process. Which means I’m unreasonably critical of myself over the smallest things. We are all our worst critics. This song is just about my brain and how dangerous it can be to me sometimes. “

Palisades most recently released “Better”, which speaks to themes of mental health, including frontman Brandon Elgar‘s experiences with agoraphobia, chronic anxiety, depression, and dissociative disorders (check out Brandon’s video diary here). “My Consequences” was the first drop from ‘Reaching Hypercritical’, and both previous releases together have amassed over 1.1 million streams on Spotify alone and 583,000 views on YouTube. Watch the visualizer for “Reaching Hypercritical” here or at the link below, stream the track here, and be sure to stay tuned for more Palisades news coming soon.

Often lost in the past two years of the coronavirus pandemic aware of the nuances that ‘normal’ life brings. Trials, traumas, loves, and losses were all still present, even if ignored.

This is something that New Jersey rock outfit Palisades are all too familiar with, the band – vocalist/bassist Brandon Elgar, guitarists Xavier Adames and Matthew Marshall, and drummer Aaron Rosa – having been forced to contend with everything from line-up changes to the death of loved ones, all the while trying to record a new album amidst the most uncertain period the music industry has ever faced.

Their efforts and struggles have not been in vain. Palisades’ superb new album, Reaching Hypercriticalis due for release on Friday, July 2022 via their long-time home Rise Records. The band – whose worldwide streams now approaching 300 million – broke the Billboard 200 with their last LP, 2018’s Erase the Pain, while also scoring the #1 Independent, Top New Artist and Alternative New Artist album. With their strongest and most ambitious record yet now ready for the world, Palisades look set to further build upon their past efforts and appearances at festivals including Louder Than Life, Reading and Leeds, Download and Rock am Ring by reinforcing their status as one of rock’s most necessarily innovative and purposeful artists.

“It’s a been a pretty drastic progression musically,” drummer Aaron Rosa notes of Reaching Hypercritical. “This album really captures how the band has matured while being brutally honest with ourselves about all the tough moments that were going through our heads while making the record. Reaching Hypercritical is a true demonstration of how the past few years have changed us as people, as a band and what Palisades’ music stands for.”

Some of that change derives from the band’s recent line-up shift, which saw frontman Lou Miceli exit and vocalist/bassist Brandon Elgar step up on sole vocals. The move has allowed Palisades to hone in on their new frontman’s passion, swagger, and raw talent, whose cathartic presence is the perfect muse for their emotive songs.

“The sheer talent and unique style Brandon brings to being a frontman really elevates our music,” guitarist Matthew Marshall comments. “His melodies, lyrics and his flair makes all of us continue to push ourselves and that was ideal for what we wanted to achieve with Reaching Hypercritical. A new beginning for Palisades.”

While the atmosphere within the band is currently one of excitement and promise, the rocky path Palisades has had to traverse in order to create Reaching Hypercritical is reflected in the solemn, introspective, and often very dark outlook of the music. Mental illness and divorce are two heavy topics that rear their head on the record, while Aaron took the opportunity on Reaching Hypercritical to open up about the death of his father, who passed away during the writing of Palisades’ new LP.

“In terms of both our mental health and our career, it very much felt like we were reaching a hypercritical point,” he says of the band’s recent experiences. “You have all of the uncertainty that was brought on by a pandemic while life continues to do what it does. My father was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer and died two months later. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to deal with, and in the middle of that, we were still trying to write a record. That moment in my life and some of the traumatic experiences of the other guys in the band really shaped this record. Ultimately, it altered the entire tone of the record and truly what the songs meant.”

From the raw emotion of “Fray” – which features a heart-breaking voice message from Aaron’s father – to the anthemic modern rock punch of the album’s first single “Better,” Reaching Hypercritical is doused in passion, intensity, and ambition. It’s the kind of record whose songs belong on the biggest platforms, as massive choruses collide with the kind of lyrical honesty and intelligence that will connect with anyone who’s experienced loss and pain.

From the depths of despair, Palisades have not only emerged with Reaching Hypercritical, but they have also done so triumphantly. For BrandonXavierMatthew, and Aaron, it’s now about sharing that victory with others who need dragging out of the mire.

“I just want to be able to show people that no matter how deep of a hole you’re in that there’s always a way to crawl out,” Brandon says. “With everything we went through, we didn’t know what was going to happen or if this band would even continue for us, but we stuck together and overcame these obstacles together. The goal of Reaching Hypercritical, more than anything, is to show people that they can do that too.”
