We were teased with “Love On The Other Side” which is the best Fall Out Boy song in over 10 years. This is not an awful album, there’s nothing that’s flat-out unlistenable. But it’s also the equivalent of a “shoulder shrug” for Fall Out Boy. Some of the songs are greatly outdated as you can tell they were written early pandemic. You then have Ethan Hawk show up for…reasons. Fall Out Boy try their hand and full pop production on some songs, abandoning rock, even some R&B flair with “Heaven, Iowa” which… wasn’t as sexy as they tried to make it sound. It’s truly harmless and it’s not played poorly, the overwriting and punny, smart hooks are still there. Again, it’s not an awful album. It’s just a shame because outside of “Love On The Other Side” and “Heartbreak Feels So Good”, there is a whole lot of shoulder shrugs. So much for…a big comeback. 6/10.
Is Fall Out Boy Overrated?
Fall Out Boy is an American rock band formed in Wilmette, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, in 2001. The band consists of lead vocalist and guitarist Patrick Stump, bassist Pete Wentz, drummer Andy Hurley, and guitarist Joe Trohman.[a] The band originated from Chicago’s hardcore punk scene and was formed by Wentz and Trohman as a pop-punk side project; Stump joined shortly thereafter. The group went through a succession of drummers before Hurley joined.
