Nu-metal/core band Darknet have surprise-released their third offering this year, The Internet.
Through record label Hollowed Records (who have just earmarked a co-distribution with Blood Blast Distribution), this follows up Darknet’s earlier album and EP in 2023, Trashworld and Self-titled 2. As the group has expanded upon their sonic stylings, The Internet contains a lot of experimentation that tends to pay off – everything from lo-fi to industrial is on the table. Described as “no promo, no hype, no marketing, no promises”, it’s a bountiful offering in an industry where some bands take years to release something. With high quantity, there’s no lack in quality, though – Darknet’s consistency is enthralling and each body of work merits its own listen.
Darknet’s surprise announcement for The Internet gave me quite the scare – framed as a “cancellation” of sorts, I feared for the worst before realizing the trickery at play. Some Facebook comments showed concern before viewing the video as well, but with the record hitting streaming services the same night, hopefully the concern wanes. In the video, Darknet notes this of the compensation within their Patreon: “It is the equivalent to streaming our music 1,500 times per month & provides a steady income to keep this project running.” For their outrageous output this year, it’s worth checking out if you dig the tunes.
