It’s hard for a band to have lightning strike twice in one year.
Converge made it happen with Hum Of Hurt.
It was a surprise in early 2026 when we received Love Is Not Enough. It was a loud, angry, and at times ferocious album that reminded people that a heavy band with over 20 years of experience can still bring it. The bigger surprise came a few months later with the announcement of Hum Of Hurt and “the title track “Doom In Bloom” as a preview. The biggest surprise is that Hum Of Hurt stands up to the high quality and standard that Converge already made once this year.
10 tracks with a runtime of under 34 minutes is more than enough material to make sure you feel a visceral anger. The distorted and harsh guitar riffs through “Slip The Noose” and the title track serve as huge statement pieces (and potential live riot-starters in concert), leading to the exclamation point that is “Nothing Is Over”.
The lyrical themes from angst to nihilism all ring through clearly. The big surprise is the remade track “I Won’t Let You Go” which was originally featured on the 2020 release of Cyberpunk 2077. Further proof that Converge has always been with us, whether in the shadows or kicking the door down.
Hum Of Hurt feels distinct from Love Is Not Enough but not being far enough away that it feels like Converge made a left turn. It instead sounds like Converge had such a massive fire lit under them in the past year that the amount of top tier music needed two separate releases. Not a double album or a deluxe album with b-sides, but two separate albums that both stand on their own.
Going back to the origins of the metalcore explosion 20 years ago and hearing what Converge are still able to create in 2026, it seems like Converge fans have nothing to worry about. Converge delivered and nothing is over for this group.
