2019 marks a big year for Chevelle as the band is supporting Breaking Benjamin on a huge summer tour and has been in the studio recording their latest album, also scheduled for this year.
On a 95 degree afternoon, the Chicago band took the stage in front of warped mirrors at Hollywood Casino Amphitheater filled with over 10,000 in attendance. I had missed both opportunities to see Chevelle earlier this year at their festival performances at Welcome To Rockville and Sonic Temple (due to inclement weather). It felt good to finally catch up with hearing the band live for my first time since 2017.
This set felt like a great selection of tracks from the past 20 years. When talking with Patrico of 105.7 The Point earlier in the day, the band said that they normally don’t have a static setlist. Chevelle knows the first few songs to start with, but then just play what they feel. That is impressive. In a scene where setlists are calculated and repeated like clockwork every night for many bands, here comes Chevelle doing whatever they want.
I feel like Chevelle sounded the best in this entire night, featuring big names like Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, Dorothy, and Diamante. Age has had no effect on the band and it only proves to show that their true drive is the music itself. No gimmicks, no wild antics, just rock. Here’s hoping they continue with that in their new album.
