“If Katniss Everdeen was re-imagined as a goth and a Gundam pilot waging a one-woman war to free Panem from ghoulish monsters as big as the sky, Toronto’s The Birthday Massacre would be uniquely suited to pen the score. And who wouldn’t want to watch that movie?” – Vanyaland
“Darkly lush, dancepop delight.” – All Music Guide
“Amid all the talented and adventurous bands of the second New Wave explosion, The Birthday Massacre is one of the best kept secrets.” – Jersey Beat
On June 9, 2017, Metropolis recording artists THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE will release UNDER YOUR SPELL, their seventh release. These 11 songs reveal a side of the Canadian band that audiences may not have seen before. Proving to be the band’s most intimate and emotive record to date, Under Your Spell is a captivating hybrid of 80’s, electronica, and aggressive guitars, fused with dark, cinematic melodic progressions, blending the expansive breadth of The Birthday Massacre’s signature sound, creating a deeply personal, immersive collection of songs.
In addition, the band has announced a North American tour that kicks off on May 18th at Toronto’s The Opera House and circles the continent, hitting cities such as Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dallas, Orlando, NYC and Boston. (full dates below)
Driven by band’s signature, unique blend of spiraling synth melodies, walls of guitar, and evocative vocals, Under Your Spell hits all the bases that audiences have come to reliably expect from the band – songs that range from dark, aggressive anthems to danceable, pretty pop – and every shade in between.
There is a rawness to the emotion that is expressed through this album, an openness and vulnerability that perhaps feels new for the listener. It becomes clearer than ever through this release of the tight bond that exists between the band, and their willingness to explore heartbreak and loss together. With these songs, they have entered the darkness of the most fragile emotions, and come back with a cohesive and detailed portrait of music that captures both the anger and the hope that exist within a moment in time.
The Birthday Massacre continue to make the music that is so very unique to them. Once again, they have managed to create an album that somehow feels so familiar, yet challenges the listener to continue alongside them on their ever-changing, ever-growing journey.
